Persecution Foretold (Acts 23:12–22)
CPDV “These things I have spoken to you, so that you would not stumble. BSB BSB: “I have told you these things so that you will not fall away.
CPDV They will put you out of the synagogues. But the hour is coming when everyone who puts you to death will consider that he is offering an excellent service to God. BSB BSB: They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
CPDV And they will do these things to you because they have not known the Father, nor me. BSB BSB: They will do these things because they have not known the Father or Me.
CPDV But these things I have spoken to you, so that, when the hour for these things will have arrived, you may remember that I told you. BSB BSB: But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
The Promise of the Holy Spirit (John 14:15–26)
CPDV But I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you. And now I am going to him who sent me. And no one among you has asked me, ‘Where are you going?’ BSB BSB: Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
CPDV But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. BSB BSB: Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things.
CPDV And when he has arrived, he will argue against the world, about sin and about justice and about judgment: BSB BSB: And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
CPDV about sin, indeed, because they have not believed in me; BSB BSB: in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me;
CPDV about justice, truly, because I am going to the Father, and you will not see me any longer; BSB BSB: in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;
CPDV about judgment, then, because the prince of this world has already been judged. BSB BSB: and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.
CPDV I still have many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them now. BSB BSB: I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it.
CPDV He shall glorify me. For he will receive from what is mine, and he will announce it to you. BSB BSB: He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you.
CPDV All things whatsoever that the Father has are mine. For this reason, I said that he will receive from what is mine and that he will announce it to you. BSB BSB: Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you.
CPDV A little while, and then you will not see me. And again a little while, and you will see me. For I am going to the Father.” BSB BSB: In a little while you will see Me no more, and then after a little while you will see Me.”
Grief Will Turn to Joy 17 CPDV Then some of his disciples said to one another: “What is this, that he is saying to us: ‘A little while, and you will not see me,’ and ‘Again a little while, and you will see me,’ and, ‘For I am going to the Father?’ ” BSB BSB: Then some of His disciples asked one another, “Why is He telling us, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
CPDV And they said: “What is this, that he is saying, ‘A little while?’ We do not understand what he is saying.” BSB BSB: They kept asking, “Why is He saying, ‘a little while’? We do not understand what He is saying.”
CPDV But Jesus realized that they wanted to question him, and so he said to them: “Are you inquiring among yourselves about this, that I said: ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me?’ BSB BSB: Aware that they wanted to question Him, Jesus said to them, “Are you asking one another why I said, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’?
CPDV Amen, amen, I say to you, that you shall mourn and weep, but the world will rejoice. And you shall be greatly saddened, yet your sorrow shall be turned into joy. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, you will weep and wail while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
CPDV A woman, when she is giving birth, has sorrow, because her hour has arrived. But when she has given birth to the child, then she no longer remembers the difficulties, because of the joy: for a man has been born into the world. BSB BSB: A woman has pain in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
CPDV Therefore, you also, indeed, have sorrow now. But I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice. And no one will take away your joy from you. BSB BSB: So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
Ask in My Name (Matthew 18:19–20)
CPDV And, in that day, you will not petition me for anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in my name, he will give it to you. BSB BSB: In that day you will no longer ask Me anything. Truly, truly, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.
CPDV Until now, you have not requested anything in my name. Ask, and you shall receive, so that your joy may be full. BSB BSB: Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
CPDV I have spoken these things to you in proverbs. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in proverbs; instead, I will announce to you plainly from the Father. BSB BSB: I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
CPDV In that day, you shall ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you. BSB BSB: In that day you will ask in My name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
CPDV For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and because you have believed that I went forth from God. BSB BSB: For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God.
CPDV I went forth from the Father, and I have come into the world. Next I am leaving the world, and I am going to the Father.” BSB BSB: I came from the Father and entered the world. In turn, I will leave the world and go to the Father.”
CPDV His disciples said to him: “Behold, now you are speaking plainly and not reciting a proverb. BSB BSB: His disciples said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and without figures of speech.
CPDV Now we know that you know all things, and that you have no need for anyone to question you. By this, we believe that you went forth from God.” BSB BSB: Now we understand that You know all things and that You have no need for anyone to question You. Because of this, we believe that You came from God.”
CPDV Jesus answered them: “Do you believe now? BSB BSB: “Do you finally believe?” Jesus replied.
CPDV Behold, the hour is coming, and it has now arrived, when you will be scattered, each one on his own, and you will leave me behind, alone. And yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. BSB BSB: “Look, an hour is coming and has already come when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and you will leave Me all alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
CPDV These things I have spoken to you, so that you may have peace in me. In the world, you will have difficulties. But have confidence: I have overcome the world.” BSB BSB: I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”
