The Soldiers Mock Jesus (Isaiah 50:4–11; Matthew 27:27–31; Mark 15:16–20; Luke 22:63–65)
CPDV Therefore, Pilate then took Jesus into custody and scourged him. BSB BSB: Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged.
CPDV And the soldiers, plaiting a crown of thorns, imposed it on his head. And they put a purple garment around him. BSB BSB: The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns, set it on His head, and dressed Him in a purple robe.
CPDV And they were approaching him and saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly. BSB BSB: And they went up to Him again and again, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and slapping Him in the face.
CPDV Then Pilate went outside again, and he said to them: “Behold, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may realize that I find no case against him.” BSB BSB: Once again Pilate came out and said to the Jews, “Look, I am bringing Him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against Him.”
CPDV (Then Jesus went out, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he said to them, “Behold the man.” BSB BSB: When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
CPDV Therefore, when the high priests and the attendants had seen him, they cried out, saying: “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them: “Take him yourselves and crucify him. For I find no case against him.” BSB BSB: As soon as the chief priests and officers saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” “You take Him and crucify Him,” Pilate replied, “for I find no basis for a charge against Him.”
CPDV The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to the law, he ought to die, for he has made himself the Son of God.” BSB BSB: “We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that law He must die, because He declared Himself to be the Son of God.”
CPDV Therefore, when Pilate had heard this word, he was more fearful. BSB BSB: When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid,
CPDV And he entered into the praetorium again. And he said to Jesus. “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no response. BSB BSB: and he went back into the Praetorium. “Where are You from?” he asked. But Jesus gave no answer.
CPDV Therefore, Pilate said to him: “Will you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to crucify you, and I have authority to release you?” BSB BSB: So Pilate said to Him, “Do You refuse to speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You and authority to crucify You?”
CPDV Jesus responded, “You would not have any authority over me, unless it were given to you from above. For this reason, he who has handed me over to you has the greater sin.” BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed Me over to you is guilty of greater sin.”
CPDV And from then on, Pilate was seeking to release him. But the Jews were crying out, saying: “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. For anyone who makes himself a king contradicts Caesar.” BSB BSB: From then on, Pilate tried to release Him, but the Jews kept shouting, “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who declares himself a king is defying Caesar.”
CPDV Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus outside, and he sat down in the seat of judgment, in a place which is called the Pavement, but in Hebrew, it is called the Elevation. BSB BSB: When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat on the judgment seat at a place called the Stone Pavement, which in Hebrew is Gabbatha.
CPDV Now it was the preparation day of the Passover, about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your king.” BSB BSB: It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, about the sixth hour. And Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is your King!”
CPDV But they were crying out: “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The high priests responded, “We have no king except Caesar.” BSB BSB: At this, they shouted, “Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” “Shall I crucify your King?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” replied the chief priests.
The Crucifixion (Psalm 22:1–31; Matthew 27:32–44; Mark 15:21–32; Luke 23:26–43)
CPDV Therefore, he then handed him over to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away. BSB BSB: Then Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified, and the soldiers took Him away.
CPDV And carrying his own cross, he went forth to the place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew it is called the Place of the Skull. BSB BSB: Carrying His own cross, He went out to The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.
CPDV Then Pilate also wrote a title, and he set it above the cross. And it was written: Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews. BSB BSB: Pilate also had a notice posted on the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
CPDV Then the high priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Do not write, ‘King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’ BSB BSB: So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but only that He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’”
CPDV Pilate responded, “What I have written, I have written.” BSB BSB: Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
CPDV Then the soldiers, when they had crucified him, took his garments, and they made four parts, one part to each soldier, and the tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven from above throughout the whole. BSB BSB: When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided His garments into four parts, one for each soldier, with the tunic remaining. It was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
CPDV Then they said to one another, “Let us not cut it, but instead let us cast lots over it, to see whose it will be.” This was so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, saying: “They have distributed my garments among themselves, and for my vesture they have cast lots.” And indeed, the soldiers did these things. BSB BSB: So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it. Instead, let us cast lots to see who will get it.” This was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My garments among them, and cast lots for My clothing.” So that is what the soldiers did.
CPDV Next, he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And from that hour, the disciple accepted her as his own. BSB BSB: Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.
The Death of Jesus (Psalm 22:1–31; Matthew 27:45–56; Mark 15:33–41; Luke 23:44–49)
CPDV After this, Jesus knew that all had been accomplished, so in order that the Scripture might be completed, he said, “I thirst.” BSB BSB: After this, knowing that everything had now been accomplished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
CPDV And there was a container placed there, full of vinegar. Then, placing a sponge full of vinegar around hyssop, they brought it to his mouth. BSB BSB: A jar of sour wine was sitting there. So they soaked a sponge in the wine, put it on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted it to His mouth.
CPDV Then Jesus, when he had received the vinegar, said: “It is consummated.” And bowing down his head, he surrendered his spirit. BSB BSB: When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.
Jesus’ Side Is Pierced (Zechariah 12:10–14)
CPDV Then the Jews, because it was the preparation day, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day), they petitioned Pilate in order that their legs might be broken, and they might be taken away. BSB BSB: It was the day of Preparation, and the next day was a High Sabbath. In order that the bodies would not remain on the cross during the Sabbath, the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed.
CPDV But after they had approached Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. BSB BSB: But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
CPDV Instead, one of the soldiers opened his side with a lance, and immediately there went out blood and water. BSB BSB: Instead, one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
CPDV And he who saw this has offered testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knows that he speaks the truth, so that you also may believe. BSB BSB: The one who saw it has testified to this, and his testimony is true. He knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.
CPDV For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “You shall not break a bone of him.” BSB BSB: Now these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of His bones will be broken.”
CPDV And again, another Scripture says: “They shall look upon him, whom they have pierced.” BSB BSB: And, as another Scripture says: “They will look on the One they have pierced.”
The Burial of Jesus (Isaiah 53:9–12; Matthew 27:57–61; Mark 15:42–47; Luke 23:50–56)
CPDV Then, after these things, Joseph from Arimathea, (because he was a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews) petitioned Pilate so that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave permission. Therefore, he went and took away the body of Jesus. BSB BSB: Afterward, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but secretly for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed His body.
CPDV Now Nicodemus also arrived, (who had gone to Jesus at first by night) bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloe, weighing about seventy pounds. BSB BSB: Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night, also brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
CPDV Therefore, they took the body of Jesus, and they bound it with linen cloths and the aromatic spices, just as it is the manner of the Jews to bury. BSB BSB: So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.
CPDV Therefore, because of the preparation day of the Jews, since the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there. BSB BSB: And because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.
