Jesus and the Samaritan Woman 1 CPDV And so, when Jesus realized that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made more disciples and baptized more than John, BSB BSB: When Jesus realized that the Pharisees were aware He was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John
CPDV (though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but only his disciples) BSB BSB: (although it was not Jesus who baptized, but His disciples),
CPDV he left behind Judea, and he traveled again to Galilee. BSB BSB: He left Judea and returned to Galilee.
CPDV Now he needed to cross through Samaria. BSB BSB: Now He had to pass through Samaria.
CPDV Therefore, he went into a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the estate which Jacob gave to his son Joseph. BSB BSB: So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
CPDV And Jacob’s well was there. And so Jesus, being tired from the journey, was sitting in a certain way on the well. It was about the sixth hour. BSB BSB: Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, weary from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
CPDV A woman of Samaria arrived to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me to drink.” BSB BSB: When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
CPDV For his disciples had gone into the city in order to buy food. BSB BSB: (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
CPDV And so, that Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, are requesting a drink from me, though I am a Samaritan woman?” For the Jews do not associate with the Samaritans. BSB BSB: “You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
CPDV Jesus responded and said to her: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give me to drink,’ perhaps you would have made a request of him, and he would have given you living water.” BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
CPDV The woman said to him: “Lord, you do not have anything with which to draw water, and the well is deep. From where, then, do you have living water? BSB BSB: “Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water?
CPDV Surely, you are not greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and who drank from it, with his sons and his cattle?” BSB BSB: Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock?”
CPDV Jesus responded and said to her: “All who drink from this water will thirst again. But whoever shall drink from the water that I will give to him will not thirst for eternity. BSB BSB: Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.
CPDV Instead, the water that I will give to him will become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.” BSB BSB: But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
CPDV The woman said to him, “Lord, give me this water, so that I may not thirst and may not come here to draw water.” BSB BSB: The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
CPDV Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and return here.” BSB BSB: Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
CPDV The woman responded and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her: “You have spoken well, in saying, ‘I have no husband.’ BSB BSB: “I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband.
CPDV For you have had five husbands, but he whom you have now is not your husband. You have spoken this in truth.” BSB BSB: In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.”
CPDV The woman said to him: “Lord, I see that you are a Prophet. BSB BSB: “Sir,” the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet.
CPDV Jesus said to her: “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you shall worship the Father, neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem. BSB BSB: “Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
CPDV But the hour is coming, and it is now, when true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeks such persons who may worship him. BSB BSB: But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.
CPDV God is Spirit. And so, those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” BSB BSB: God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”
CPDV The woman said to him: “I know that the Messiah is coming (who is called the Christ). And then, when he will have arrived, he will announce everything to us.” BSB BSB: The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”
CPDV Jesus said to her: “I am he, the one who is speaking with you.” BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”
The Disciples Return and Marvel 27 CPDV And then his disciples arrived. And they wondered that he was speaking with the woman. Yet no one said: “What are you seeking?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” BSB BSB: Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
CPDV And so the woman left behind her water jar and went into the city. And she said to the men there: BSB BSB: Then the woman left her water jar, went back into the town, and said to the people,
CPDV “Come and see a man who has told me all the things that I have done. Is he not the Christ?” BSB BSB: “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
CPDV Therefore, they went out of the city and came to him. BSB BSB: So they left the town and made their way toward Jesus.
CPDV Meanwhile, the disciples petitioned him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” BSB BSB: Meanwhile the disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
CPDV But he said to them, “I have food to eat which you do not know.” BSB BSB: But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
CPDV Therefore, the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?” BSB BSB: So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”
CPDV Jesus said to them: “My food is to do the will of the One who sent me, so that I may perfect his work. BSB BSB: Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
CPDV Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and then the harvest arrives?’ Behold, I say to you: Lift up your eyes and look at the countryside; for it is already ripe for the harvest. BSB BSB: Do you not say, ‘There are still four months until the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ripe for harvest.
CPDV For he who reaps, receives wages and gathers fruit unto eternal life, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. BSB BSB: Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.
CPDV For in this the word is true: that it is one who sows, and it is another who reaps. BSB BSB: For in this case the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
CPDV I have sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.” BSB BSB: I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the hard work, and now you have taken up their labor.”
Many Samaritans Believe 39 CPDV Now many of the Samaritans from that city believed in him, because of the word of the woman who was offering testimony: “For he told me all the things that I have done.” BSB BSB: Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
CPDV Therefore, when the Samaritans had come to him, they petitioned him to lodge there. And he lodged there for two days. BSB BSB: So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed two days.
CPDV And many more believed in him, because of his own word. BSB BSB: And many more believed because of His message.
CPDV And they said to the woman: “Now we believe, not because of your speech, but because we ourselves have heard him, and so we know that he is truly the Savior of the world.” BSB BSB: They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.”

BSB BSB: Yet when He arrived, the Galileans welcomed Him. They had seen all the great things He had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they had gone there as well.
CPDV Then he went again into Cana of Galilee, where he made water into wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capernaum. BSB BSB: So once again He came to Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.

CPDV Then, as he was going down, his servants met him. And they reported to him, saying that his son was alive. BSB BSB: And while he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.
CPDV Therefore, he asked them at which hour he had become better. And they said to him, “Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.” BSB BSB: So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered, and they told him, “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.”
CPDV Then the father realized that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And both he and his entire household believed.
