A Greeting from Jude (James 1:1)
CPDV Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to those who are beloved in God the Father, and who are guarded and called in Jesus Christ: BSB BSB: Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who are called, loved by God the Father, and kept in Jesus Christ:
CPDV May mercy, and peace, and love be fulfilled in you. BSB BSB: Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.
God’s Judgment on the Ungodly (2 Peter 3:1–7)
CPDV For certain men entered unnoticed, who were written of beforehand unto this judgment: impious persons who are transforming the grace of our God into self-indulgence, and who are denying both the sole Ruler and our Lord Jesus Christ. BSB BSB: For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—ungodly ones who were designated long ago for condemnation. They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality, and they deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
CPDV So I want to caution you. Those who once knew everything that Jesus did, in saving the people from the land of Egypt, afterwards perished because they did not believe. BSB BSB: Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, He destroyed those who did not believe.
CPDV And truly, the Angels, who did not keep to their first place, but instead abandoned their own domiciles, he has reserved with perpetual chains under darkness, unto the great day of judgment. BSB BSB: And the angels who did not stay within their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling—these He has kept in eternal chains under darkness, bound for judgment on that great day.
CPDV And also Sodom and Gomorrah, and the adjoining cities, in similar ways, having given themselves over to fornication and to the pursuing of other flesh, were made an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire. BSB BSB: In like manner, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, who indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire.
CPDV Similarly also, these ones certainly defile the flesh, and they despise proper authority, and they blaspheme against majesty. BSB BSB: Yet in the same way these dreamers defile their bodies, reject authority, and slander glorious beings.
CPDV When Michael the Archangel, disputing with the devil, contended about the body of Moses, he did not dare to bring against him a judgment of blasphemy, so instead he said: “The Lord commands you.” BSB BSB: But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, did not presume to bring a slanderous charge against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
CPDV But these men certainly blaspheme against whatever they do not understand. And yet, whatever they, like mute animals, know from nature, in these things they are corrupted. BSB BSB: These men, however, slander what they do not understand, and like irrational animals, they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively.
CPDV Woe to them! For they have gone after the way of Cain, and they have poured out the error of Balaam for profit, and they have perished in the sedition of Korah. BSB BSB: Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain; they have rushed for profit into the error of Balaam; they have perished in Korah’s rebellion.
CPDV These ones are defiled within their banquets, enjoying themselves and feeding themselves without fear; waterless clouds, which are tossed about by winds; autumn trees, unfruitful, twice dead, uprooted; BSB BSB: These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts, shamelessly feasting with you but shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted.
CPDV raging waves of the sea, foaming from their own confusion; wandering stars, for whom the whirlwind of darkness has been reserved forever! BSB BSB: They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.
CPDV to execute judgment against everyone, and to reprove all the impious concerning all the works of their impiety, by which they have acted impiously, and concerning all the harsh things that impious sinners have spoken against God.” BSB BSB: to execute judgment on everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of every ungodly act of wickedness and every harsh word spoken against Him by ungodly sinners.”
CPDV These ones are complaining murmurers, walking according to their own desires. And their mouth is speaking arrogance, admiring persons for the sake of gain. BSB BSB: These men are discontented grumblers, following after their own lusts; their mouths spew arrogance; they flatter others for their own advantage.
A Call to Persevere (Hebrews 10:19–39; 2 Peter 3:1–7)
CPDV But as for you, most beloved, be mindful of the words which have been foretold by the Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, BSB BSB: But you, beloved, remember what was foretold by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ
CPDV who declared to you that, in the end time, there would arrive mockers, walking according to their own desires, in impieties. BSB BSB: when they said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow after their own ungodly desires.”
CPDV These are the ones who segregate themselves; they are animals, not having the Spirit. BSB BSB: These are the ones who cause divisions, who are worldly and devoid of the Spirit.
CPDV But you, most beloved, are building yourselves up by your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, BSB BSB: But you, beloved, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,
CPDV keeping yourselves in the love of God, and anticipating the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. BSB BSB: keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life.
CPDV So certainly, reprove them, after they have been judged. BSB BSB: And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt;
CPDV Yet truly, save them, seizing them from the fire. And have mercy on others: in fear, hating even that which is of the flesh, the defiled garment. BSB BSB: save others by snatching them from the fire; and to still others show mercy tempered with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.
Doxology (Romans 16:25–27)
CPDV Then, to him who has the power to keep you free from sin and to present you, immaculate, with exultation, before the presence of his glory at the advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, BSB BSB: Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished in His glorious presence, with great joy—
CPDV to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord: to him be glory and magnificence, dominion and power, before all ages, and now, and in every age, forever. Amen. BSB BSB: to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord before all time, and now, and for all eternity. Amen.
