Jesus Sends the Seventy-Two (Matthew 9:35–38)
CPDV Then, after these things, the Lord also designated another seventy-two. And he sent them in pairs before his face, into every city and place where he was to arrive. BSB BSB: After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place He was about to visit.
CPDV And he said to them: “Certainly the harvest is great, but the workers are few. Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers into his harvest. BSB BSB: And He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest.
CPDV Go forth. Behold, I send you out like lambs among wolves. BSB BSB: Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.
CPDV Do not choose to carry a purse, nor provisions, nor shoes; and you shall greet no one along the way. BSB BSB: Carry no purse or bag or sandals. Do not greet anyone along the road.
CPDV Into whatever house you will have entered, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ BSB BSB: Whatever house you enter, begin by saying, ‘Peace to this house.’
CPDV And remain in the same house, eating and drinking the things that are with them. For the worker is worthy of his pay. Do not choose to pass from house to house. BSB BSB: Stay at the same house, eating and drinking whatever you are offered. For the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
CPDV And into whatever city you have entered and they have received you, eat what they set before you. BSB BSB: If you enter a town and they welcome you, eat whatever is set before you.
CPDV And cure the sick who are in that place, and proclaim to them, ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.’ BSB BSB: Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’
CPDV But into whatever city you have entered and they have not received you, going out into its main streets, say: BSB BSB: But if you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go into the streets and declare,
CPDV ‘Even the dust which clings to us from your city, we wipe away against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has drawn near.’ BSB BSB: ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off as a testimony against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.’
CPDV I say to you, that in that day, Sodom will be forgiven more than that city will be. BSB BSB: I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
Woe to the Unrepentant (Matthew 11:20–24)
CPDV Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that have been wrought in you, had been wrought in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in haircloth and ashes. BSB BSB: Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
CPDV Yet truly, Tyre and Sidon will be forgiven more in the judgment than you will be. BSB BSB: But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.
CPDV And as for you, Capernaum, who would be exalted even up to Heaven: you shall be submerged into Hell. BSB BSB: And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades!
CPDV Whoever hears you, hears me. And whoever despises you, despises me. And whoever despises me, despises him who sent me.” BSB BSB: Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you rejects Me; and whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”
The Joyful Return 17 CPDV Then the seventy-two returned with gladness, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us, in your name.” BSB BSB: The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”
CPDV And he said to them: “I was watching as Satan fell like lightning from heaven. BSB BSB: So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
CPDV Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the powers of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. BSB BSB: Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you.
CPDV Yet truly, do not choose to rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” BSB BSB: Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Jesus’ Prayer of Thanksgiving (Matthew 11:25–30)
CPDV In the same hour, he exulted in the Holy Spirit, and he said: “I confess to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the prudent, and have revealed them to little ones. It is so, Father, because this way was pleasing before you. BSB BSB: At that time Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.
CPDV All things have been delivered to me by my Father. And no one knows who the Son is, except the Father, and who the Father is, except the Son, and those to whom the Son has chosen to reveal him.” BSB BSB: All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.”
CPDV And turning to his disciples, he said: “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. BSB BSB: Then Jesus turned to the disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
CPDV For I say to you, that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things that you see, and they did not see them, and to hear the things that you hear, and they did not hear them.” BSB BSB: For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”
The Parable of the Good Samaritan 25 CPDV And behold, a certain expert in the law rose up, testing him and saying, “Teacher, what must I do to possess eternal life?” BSB BSB: One day an expert in the law stood up to test Him. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
CPDV But he said to him: “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” BSB BSB: “What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied. “How do you read it?”
CPDV In response, he said: “You shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart, and from your whole soul, and from all your strength, and from all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” BSB BSB: He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
CPDV And he said to him: “You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.” BSB BSB: “You have answered correctly,” Jesus said. “Do this and you will live.”
CPDV But since he wanted to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” BSB BSB: But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
CPDV Then Jesus, taking this up, said: “A certain man descended from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he happened upon robbers, who now also plundered him. And inflicting him with wounds, they went away, leaving him behind, half-alive. BSB BSB: Jesus took up this question and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.
CPDV And it happened that a certain priest was descending along the same way. And seeing him, he passed by. BSB BSB: Now by chance a priest was going down the same road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
CPDV And similarly a Levite, when he was near the place, also saw him, and he passed by. BSB BSB: So too, when a Levite came to that spot and saw him, he passed by on the other side.
CPDV But a certain Samaritan, being on a journey, came near him. And seeing him, he was moved by mercy. BSB BSB: But a Samaritan on a journey came upon him, and when he saw him, he had compassion.
CPDV And approaching him, he bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. And setting him on his pack animal, he brought him to an inn, and he took care of him. BSB BSB: He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
CPDV And the next day, he took out two denarii, and he gave them to the proprietor, and he said: ‘Take care of him. And whatever extra you will have spent, I will repay to you at my return.’ BSB BSB: The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Take care of him,’ he said, ‘and on my return I will repay you for any additional expense.’
CPDV Which of these three, does it seem to you, was a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?” BSB BSB: Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
CPDV Then he said, “The one who acted with mercy toward him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go, and act similarly.” BSB BSB: “The one who showed him mercy,” replied the expert in the law. Then Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
Martha and Mary 39 CPDV And she had a sister, named Mary, who, while sitting beside the Lord’s feet, was listening to his word. BSB BSB: She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to His message.
CPDV Now Martha was continually busying herself with serving. And she stood still and said: “Lord, is it not a concern to you that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore, speak to her, so that she may help me.” BSB BSB: But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!”
CPDV And the Lord responded by saying to her: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled over many things. BSB BSB: “Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things.
CPDV And yet only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the best portion, and it shall not be taken away from her.” BSB BSB: But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”
