The Tradition of the Elders (Matthew 15:1–9)
CPDV And when they had seen certain ones from his disciples eating bread with common hands, that is, with unwashed hands, they disparaged them. BSB BSB: and they saw some of His disciples eating with hands that were defiled—that is, unwashed.
CPDV For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat without repeatedly washing their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders. BSB BSB: Now in holding to the tradition of the elders, the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat until they wash their hands ceremonially.
CPDV And when returning from the market, unless they wash, they do not eat. And there are many other things which have been handed down to them to observe: the washings of cups, and pitchers, and bronze containers, and beds. BSB BSB: And on returning from the market, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions for them to observe, including the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and couches for dining.
CPDV And so the Pharisees and the scribes questioned him: “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but they eat bread with common hands?” BSB BSB: So the Pharisees and scribes questioned Jesus: “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with defiled hands.”
CPDV But in response, he said to them: “So well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, just as it has been written: ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. BSB BSB: Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.
CPDV And in vain do they worship me, teaching the doctrines and precepts of men.’ BSB BSB: They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.’
CPDV For abandoning the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men, to the washing of pitchers and cups. And you do many other things similar to these.” BSB BSB: You have disregarded the commandment of God to keep the tradition of men.”
CPDV For Moses said: ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever will have cursed father or mother, let him die a death.’ BSB BSB: For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’
CPDV But you say, ‘If a man will have said to his father or mother: Korban, (which is a gift) whatever is from me will be to your benefit,’ BSB BSB: But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is Corban’ (that is, a gift devoted to God),
CPDV then you do not release him to do anything for his father or mother, BSB BSB: he is no longer permitted to do anything for his father or mother.
CPDV rescinding the word of God through your tradition, which you have handed down. And you do many other similar things in this way.” BSB BSB: Thus you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do so in many such matters.”
What Defiles a Man (Matthew 15:10–20)
CPDV There is nothing from outside a man which, by entering into him, is able to defile him. But the things which proceed from a man, these are what pollute a man. BSB BSB: Nothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him; but the things that come out of a man, these are what defile him.”
CPDV Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.” BSB BSB: Not in the BSB
CPDV And when he had entered into the house, away from the crowd, his disciples questioned him about the parable. BSB BSB: After Jesus had left the crowd and gone into the house, His disciples inquired about the parable.
CPDV For it does not enter into his heart, but into the gut, and it exits into the sewer, purging all foods.” BSB BSB: because it does not enter his heart, but it goes into the stomach and then is eliminated.” (Thus all foods are clean.)
CPDV “But,” he said “the things which go out from a man, these pollute a man. BSB BSB: He continued: “What comes out of a man, that is what defiles him.
CPDV For from within, from the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, BSB BSB: For from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,
CPDV thefts, avarice, wickedness, deceitfulness, homosexuality, an evil eye, blasphemy, self-exaltation, foolishness. BSB BSB: greed, wickedness, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness.
CPDV All these evils proceed from within and pollute a man.” BSB BSB: All these evils come from within, and these are what defile a man.”
The Faith of the Gentile Woman (Matthew 15:21–28)
CPDV And rising up, he went from there to the area of Tyre and Sidon. And entering into a house, he intended no one to know about it, but he was not able to remain hidden. BSB BSB: Jesus left that place and went to the region of Tyre. Not wanting anyone to know He was there, He entered a house, but was unable to escape their notice.
CPDV For a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit, as soon as she heard about him, entered and fell prostrate at his feet. BSB BSB: Instead, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit soon heard about Jesus, and she came and fell at His feet.
CPDV For the woman was a Gentile, by birth a Syro-Phoenician. And she petitioned him, so that he would cast the demon from her daughter. BSB BSB: Now she was a Greek woman of Syrophoenician origin, and she kept asking Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
CPDV But she responded by saying to him: “Certainly, Lord. Yet the young dogs also eat, under the table, from the crumbs of the children.” BSB BSB: “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
CPDV And when she had gone to her house, she found the girl lying on the bed; and the demon had gone away. BSB BSB: And she went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.
The Deaf and Mute Man (Matthew 9:27–34)
CPDV And again, departing from the borders of Tyre, he went by way of Sidon to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the area of the Ten Cities. BSB BSB: Then Jesus left the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.
CPDV And they brought someone who was deaf and mute to him. And they begged him, so that he would lay his hand upon him. BSB BSB: Some people brought to Him a man who was deaf and hardly able to speak, and they begged Jesus to place His hand on him.
CPDV And taking him away from the crowd, he put his fingers into his ears; and spitting, he touched his tongue. BSB BSB: So Jesus took him aside privately, away from the crowd, and put His fingers into the man’s ears. Then He spit and touched the man’s tongue.
CPDV And gazing up to heaven, he groaned and said to him: “Ephphatha,” which is, “Be opened.” BSB BSB: And looking up to heaven, He sighed deeply and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means, “Be opened!”).
CPDV And immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was released, and he spoke correctly. BSB BSB: Immediately the man’s ears were opened and his tongue was released, and he began to speak plainly.
CPDV And he instructed them not to tell anyone. But as much as he instructed them, so much more did they preach about it. BSB BSB: Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more He ordered them, the more widely they proclaimed it.
CPDV And so much more did they wonder, saying: “He has done all things well. He has caused both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.” BSB BSB: The people were utterly astonished and said, “He has done all things well! He makes even the deaf hear and the mute speak!”
