The Tradition of the Elders (Mark 7:1–13)
CPDV Then the scribes and the Pharisees came to him from Jerusalem, saying: BSB BSB: Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
CPDV “Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” BSB BSB: “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands before they eat.”
CPDV But responding, he said to them: “And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said: BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
CPDV ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Whoever will have cursed father or mother shall die a death.’ BSB BSB: For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’
CPDV But you say: ‘If anyone will have said to father or mother, “It is dedicated, so that whatever is from me will benefit you,” BSB BSB: But you say that if anyone says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’
CPDV then he shall not honor his father or his mother.’ So have you nullified the commandment of God, for the sake of your tradition. BSB BSB: he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
CPDV Hypocrites! How well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: BSB BSB: You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you:
CPDV For in vain do they worship me, teaching the doctrines and commandments of men.’ ” BSB BSB: They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.’”
What Defiles a Man (Mark 7:14–23)
CPDV And having called the multitudes to him, he said to them: “Listen and understand. BSB BSB: Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, “Listen and understand.
CPDV A man is not defiled by what enters into the mouth, but by what proceeds from the mouth. This is what defiles a man.” BSB BSB: A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of it.”
CPDV Then his disciples drew near and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees, upon hearing this word, were offended?” BSB BSB: Then the disciples came to Him and said, “Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
CPDV But in response he said: “Every plant which has not been planted by my heavenly Father shall be uprooted. BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by its roots.
CPDV Leave them alone. They are blind, and they lead the blind. But if the blind are in charge of the blind, both will fall into the pit.” BSB BSB: Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”
CPDV And responding, Peter said to him, “Explain this parable to us.” BSB BSB: Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”
CPDV But he said: “Are you, even now, without understanding? BSB BSB: “Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked.
CPDV Do you not understand that everything that enters into the mouth goes into the gut, and is cast into the sewer? BSB BSB: “Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated?
CPDV But what proceeds from the mouth, goes forth from the heart, and those are the things that defile a man. BSB BSB: But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man.
CPDV For from the heart go out evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. BSB BSB: For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander.
CPDV These are the things that defile a man. But to eat without washing hands does not defile a man.” BSB BSB: These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile him.”
The Faith of the Canaanite Woman (Mark 7:24–30)
CPDV And behold, a woman of Canaan, going out from those parts, cried out, saying to him: “Take pity on me, Lord, Son of David. My daughter is badly afflicted by a demon.” BSB BSB: And a Canaanite woman from that region came to Him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is miserably possessed by a demon.”
CPDV But she approached and adored him, saying, “Lord, help me.” BSB BSB: The woman came and knelt before Him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
CPDV And responding, he said, “It is not good to take the bread of the children and cast it to the dogs.” BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
CPDV But she said, “Yes, Lord, but the young dogs also eat from the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters.” BSB BSB: “Yes, Lord,” she said, “even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
The Feeding of the Four Thousand (2 Kings 4:42–44; Mark 8:1–10)
CPDV And when Jesus had passed from there, he arrived beside the sea of Galilee. And ascending onto a mountain, he sat down there. BSB BSB: Moving on from there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on a mountain and sat down.
CPDV And great multitudes came to him, having with them the mute, the blind, the lame, the disabled, and many others. And they cast them down at his feet, and he cured them, BSB BSB: Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and laid them at His feet, and He healed them.
CPDV so much so that the crowds wondered, seeing the mute speaking, the lame walking, the blind seeing. And they magnified the God of Israel. BSB BSB: The crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.
CPDV And Jesus, calling together his disciples, said: “I have compassion on the crowds, because they have persevered with me now for three days, and they do not have anything to eat. And I am not willing to dismiss them, fasting, lest they faint along the way.” BSB BSB: Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may faint along the way.”
CPDV And the disciples said to him: “From where, then, in the desert, would we obtain enough bread to satisfy so a great multitude?” BSB BSB: The disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could we find enough bread to feed such a large crowd?”
CPDV And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves of bread do you have?” But they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.” BSB BSB: “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
CPDV And he instructed the crowds to recline upon the ground. BSB BSB: And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground.
CPDV And taking the seven loaves and the fish, and giving thanks, he broke and gave to his disciples, and the disciples gave to the people. BSB BSB: Taking the seven loaves and the fish, He gave thanks and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
CPDV And they all ate and were satisfied. And, from what was left over of the fragments, they took up seven full baskets. BSB BSB: They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
CPDV But those who ate were four thousand men, plus children and women. BSB BSB: A total of four thousand men were fed, besides women and children.
CPDV And having dismissed the crowd, he climbed into a boat. And he went into the coastal region of Magadan. BSB BSB: After Jesus had dismissed the crowds, He got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
