CPDV And responding, Jesus again spoke to them in parables, saying: BSB BSB: Once again, Jesus spoke to them in parables:
CPDV “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who was king, who celebrated a wedding for his son. BSB BSB: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.
CPDV And he sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding. But they were not willing to come. BSB BSB: He sent his servants to call those he had invited to the banquet, but they refused to come.
CPDV Again, he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell the invited: Behold, I have prepared my meal. My bulls and fatlings have been killed, and all is ready. Come to the wedding.’ BSB BSB: Again, he sent other servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’
CPDV But they ignored this and they went away: one to his country estate, and another to his business. BSB BSB: But they paid no attention and went away, one to his field, another to his business.
CPDV Yet truly, the rest took hold of his servants and, having treated them with contempt, killed them. BSB BSB: The rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.
CPDV But when the king heard this, he was angry. And sending out his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and he burned their city. BSB BSB: The king was enraged, and he sent his troops to destroy those murderers and burn their city.
CPDV Then he said to his servants: ‘The wedding, indeed, has been prepared. But those who were invited were not worthy. BSB BSB: Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited were not worthy.
CPDV Therefore, go out to the ways, and call whomever you will find to the wedding.’ BSB BSB: Go therefore to the crossroads and invite to the banquet as many as you can find.’
CPDV And his servants, departing into the ways, gathered all those whom they found, bad and good, and the wedding was filled with guests. BSB BSB: So the servants went out into the streets and gathered everyone they could find, both evil and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
CPDV Then the king entered to see the guests. And he saw a man there who was not clothed in a wedding garment. BSB BSB: But when the king came in to see the guests, he spotted a man who was not dressed in wedding clothes.
CPDV And he said to him, ‘Friend, how is it that you have entered here without having a wedding garment?’ But he was dumbstruck. BSB BSB: ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But the man was speechless.
CPDV Then the king said to the ministers: ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. BSB BSB: Then the king told the servants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
CPDV For many are called, but few are chosen.’ ” BSB BSB: For many are called, but few are chosen.”

CPDV Then the Pharisees, going out, took counsel as to how they might entrap him in speech. BSB BSB: Then the Pharisees went out and conspired to trap Jesus in His words.
CPDV And they sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying: “Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and that you teach the way of God in truth, and that the influence of others is nothing to you. For you do not consider the reputation of men. BSB BSB: They sent their disciples to Him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and that You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You seek favor from no one, because You pay no attention to external appearance.
CPDV Therefore, tell us, how does it seem to you? Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar, or not?” BSB BSB: So tell us what You think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
CPDV But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said: “Why do you test me, you hypocrites? BSB BSB: But Jesus knew their evil intent and said, “You hypocrites, why are you testing Me?
CPDV Show me the coin of the census tax.” And they offered him a denarius. BSB BSB: Show Me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought Him a denarius.
CPDV And Jesus said to them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?” BSB BSB: “Whose image is this,” He asked, “and whose inscription?”
CPDV They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Then render to Caesar what is of Caesar; and to God what is of God.” BSB BSB: “Caesar’s,” they answered. So Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
CPDV And hearing this, they wondered. And having left him behind, they went away. BSB BSB: And when they heard this, they were amazed. So they left Him and went away.
The Sadducees and the Resurrection (Mark 12:18–27; Luke 20:27–40)
CPDV saying: “Teacher, Moses said: If anyone will have died, having no son, his brother shall marry his wife, and he shall raise up offspring to his brother. BSB BSB: “Teacher,” they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies without having children, his brother is to marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.
CPDV Now there were seven brothers with us. And the first, having taken a wife, died. And having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother: BSB BSB: Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died without having children. So he left his wife to his brother.
CPDV similarly with the second, and the third, even to the seventh. BSB BSB: The same thing happened to the second and third brothers, down to the seventh.
CPDV And last of all, the woman also passed away. BSB BSB: And last of all, the woman died.
CPDV In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.” BSB BSB: In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? For all of them were married to her.”
CPDV But Jesus responded to them by saying: “You have gone astray by knowing neither the Scriptures, nor the power of God. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
CPDV For in the resurrection, they shall neither marry, nor be given in marriage. Instead, they shall be like the Angels of God in heaven. BSB BSB: In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.
CPDV But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken by God, saying to you: BSB BSB: But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what God said to you:
CPDV And when the crowds heard this, they wondered at his doctrine. BSB BSB: When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
The Greatest Commandment (Deuteronomy 6:1–19; Mark 12:28–34)
CPDV But the Pharisees, hearing that he had caused the Sadducees to be silent, came together as one. BSB BSB: And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together.
CPDV And one of them, a doctor of the law, questioned him, to test him: BSB BSB: One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question:
CPDV “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” BSB BSB: “Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?”
CPDV Jesus said to him: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God from all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ BSB BSB: Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
CPDV This is the greatest and first commandment. BSB BSB: This is the first and greatest commandment.
CPDV But the second is similar to it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ BSB BSB: And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
CPDV On these two commandments the entire law depends, and also the prophets.” BSB BSB: All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Whose Son Is the Christ? (Mark 12:35–37; Luke 20:41–44)
CPDV Then, when the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them, BSB BSB: While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus questioned them:
CPDV saying: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “David’s.” BSB BSB: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?” “David’s,” they answered.
CPDV He said to them: “Then how can David, in the Spirit, call him Lord, saying: BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord’? For he says:
CPDV ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool?’ BSB BSB: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’
CPDV So then, if David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” BSB BSB: So if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how can He be David’s son?”
CPDV And no one was able to respond to him a word. And neither did anyone dare, from that day forward, to question him. BSB BSB: No one was able to answer a word, and from that day on no one dared to question Him any further.
