Judging Others (Luke 6:37–42; Romans 14:1–12)
CPDV For with whatever judgment you judge, so shall you be judged; and with whatever measure you measure out, so shall it be measured back to you. BSB BSB: For with the same judgment you pronounce, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
CPDV And how can you see the splinter in your brother’s eye, and not see the board in your own eye? BSB BSB: Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?
CPDV Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter from your eye,’ while, behold, a board is in your own eye? BSB BSB: How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while there is still a beam in your own eye?
CPDV Hypocrite, first remove the board from your own eye, and then you will see clearly enough to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye. BSB BSB: You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
CPDV Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not cast your pearls before swine, lest perhaps they may trample them under their feet, and then, turning, they may tear you apart. BSB BSB: Do not give dogs what is holy; do not throw your pearls before swine. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.
Ask, Seek, Knock (Luke 11:5–13)
CPDV Ask, and it shall be given to you. Seek, and you shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened to you. BSB BSB: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.
CPDV For everyone who asks, receives; and whoever seeks, finds; and to anyone who knocks, it will be opened. BSB BSB: For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
CPDV Or what man is there among you, who, if his son were to ask him for bread, would offer him a stone; BSB BSB: Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
CPDV or if he were to ask him for a fish, would offer him a snake? BSB BSB: Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
CPDV Therefore, if you, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your sons, how much more will your Father, who is in heaven, give good things to those who ask him? BSB BSB: So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
CPDV Therefore, all things whatsoever that you wish that men would do to you, do so also to them. For this is the law and the prophets. BSB BSB: In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the Prophets.
The Narrow Gate (Luke 13:22–30)
CPDV Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate, and broad is the way, which leads to perdition, and many there are who enter through it. BSB BSB: Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
CPDV How narrow is the gate, and how straight is the way, which leads to life, and few there are who find it! BSB BSB: But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.
A Tree and Its Fruit (Luke 6:43–45)
CPDV Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. BSB BSB: Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
CPDV So then, every good tree produces good fruit, and the evil tree produces evil fruit. BSB BSB: Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
CPDV A good tree is not able to produce evil fruit, and an evil tree is not able to produce good fruit. BSB BSB: A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
CPDV Every tree which does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire. BSB BSB: Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
CPDV Therefore, by their fruits you will know them. BSB BSB: So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.
CPDV Many will say to me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and perform many powerful deeds in your name?’ BSB BSB: Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’
CPDV And then will I disclose to them: ‘I have never known you. Depart from me, you workers of iniquity.’ BSB BSB: Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’
The House on the Rock (Luke 6:46–49)
CPDV Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and does them shall be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock. BSB BSB: Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
CPDV And the rains descended, and the floods rose up, and the winds blew, and rushed upon that house, but it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. BSB BSB: The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock.
CPDV And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them shall be like a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand. BSB BSB: But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
CPDV And the rains descended, and the floods rose up, and the winds blew, and rushed upon that house, and it did fall, and great was its ruin.” BSB BSB: The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its collapse!”
The Authority of Jesus 28 CPDV And it happened, when Jesus had completed these words, that the crowds were astonished at his doctrine. BSB BSB: When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at His teaching,
CPDV For he was teaching them as one who has authority, and not like their scribes and Pharisees. BSB BSB: because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
