Psalm 52 52 Psalms Book 2 Catholic Public Domain Version Why Do You Boast of Evil? (1 Samuel 22:6–23)
CPDV Unto the end. The understanding of David. When Doeg the Edomite came and reported to Saul, David went to the house of Ahimelech. Why do you glory in malice, you who are powerful in iniquity? BSB BSB: For the choirmaster. A Maskil of David. After Doeg the Edomite went to Saul and told him, “David has gone to the house of Ahimelech.” Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man? The loving devotion of God endures all day long.
CPDV All day long your tongue thinks up injustice. Like a sharp razor, you have wrought deceit. BSB BSB: Your tongue devises destruction like a sharpened razor, O worker of deceit.
CPDV You have loved malice above goodness, and iniquity more than speaking righteousness. BSB BSB: You love evil more than good, falsehood more than speaking truth. Selah
CPDV You have loved all precipitous words, you deceitful tongue. BSB BSB: You love every word that devours, O deceitful tongue.
CPDV Because of this, God will destroy you in the end. He will pull you up, and he will remove you from your tabernacle and your root from the land of the living. BSB BSB: Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin; He will snatch you up and tear you away from your tent; He will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah
CPDV The just will see and be afraid, and they will laugh over him, and say: BSB BSB: The righteous will see and fear; they will mock the evildoer, saying,
CPDV “Behold the man who did not set God as his helper. But he hoped in the multitude of his riches, and so he prevailed in his emptiness.” BSB BSB: “Look at the man who did not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his wealth and strengthened himself by destruction.”
CPDV But I, like a fruitful olive tree in the house of God, have hoped in the mercy of God unto eternity, and forever and ever. BSB BSB: But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in the loving devotion of God forever and ever.
CPDV I will confess to you forever, because you have accomplished it. And I will wait on your name, for it is good in the sight of your saints. BSB BSB: I will praise You forever, because You have done it. I will wait on Your name—for it is good—in the presence of Your saints.
