Children of God 1 DBY See what love the Father has given to us, that we should be called the children of God. For this reason the world knows us not, because it knew him not. BSB BSB: Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.
DBY Beloved, now are we children of God, and what we shall be has not yet been manifested; we know that if it is manifested we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. BSB BSB: Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.
DBY And every one that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure. BSB BSB: And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as Christ is pure.
DBY Every one that practises sin practises also lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. BSB BSB: Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness.
DBY And ye know that he has been manifested that he might take away our sins; and in him sin is not. BSB BSB: But you know that Christ appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin.
DBY Whoever abides in him, does not sin: whoever sins, has not seen him or known him. BSB BSB: No one who remains in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him.
DBY Children, let no man lead you astray; he that practises righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. BSB BSB: Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Christ is righteous.
DBY He that practises sin is of the devil; for from the beginning the devil sins. To this end the Son of God has been manifested, that he might undo the works of the devil. BSB BSB: The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.
DBY Whoever has been begotten of God does not practise sin, because his seed abides in him, and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God. BSB BSB: Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin, because God’s seed abides in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
DBY In this are manifest the children of God and the children of the devil. Whoever does not practise righteousness is not of God, and he who does not love his brother. BSB BSB: By this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil: Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is anyone who does not love his brother.
Love One Another (John 13:31–35; Romans 12:9–13)
DBY For this is the message which ye have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another: BSB BSB: This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
DBY not as Cain was of the wicked one, and slew his brother; and on account of what slew he him? because his works were wicked, and those of his brother righteous. BSB BSB: Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did Cain slay him? Because his own deeds were evil, while those of his brother were righteous.
DBY Do not wonder, brethren, if the world hate you. BSB BSB: So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.
DBY Every one that hates his brother is a murderer, and ye know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. BSB BSB: Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that eternal life does not reside in a murderer.
DBY Hereby we have known love, because he has laid down his life for us; and we ought for the brethren to lay down our lives. BSB BSB: By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
DBY But whoso may have the world's substance, and see his brother having need, and shut up his bowels from him, how abides the love of God in him? BSB BSB: If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him?
DBY Children, let us not love with word, nor with tongue, but in deed and in truth. BSB BSB: Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.
DBY And hereby we shall know that we are of the truth, and shall persuade our hearts before him — BSB BSB: And by this we will know that we belong to the truth, and will assure our hearts in His presence:
DBY that if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. BSB BSB: Even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and He knows all things.
DBY Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness towards God, BSB BSB: Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God,
DBY and whatsoever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments, and practise the things which are pleasing in his sight. BSB BSB: and we will receive from Him whatever we ask, because we keep His commandments and do what is pleasing in His sight.
DBY And this is his commandment, that we believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another, even as he has given us commandment. BSB BSB: And this is His commandment: that we should believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we should love one another just as He commanded us.
DBY And he that keeps his commandments abides in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given to us. BSB BSB: Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us.
