Overcoming the World 1 DBY Every one that believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten of God; and every one that loves him that has begotten loves also him that is begotten of him. BSB BSB: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves those born of Him.
2 DBY Hereby know we that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments. BSB BSB: By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments.
3 DBY For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments; and his commandments are not grievous. BSB BSB: For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome,
4 DBY For all that has been begotten of God gets the victory over the world; and this is the victory which has gotten the victory over the world, our faith. BSB BSB: because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.
5 DBY Who is he that gets the victory over the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God? BSB BSB: Who then overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
6 DBY This is he that came by water and blood, Jesus the Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that bears witness, for the Spirit is the truth. BSB BSB: This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ—not by water alone, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies to this, because the Spirit is the truth.
7 DBY For they that bear witness are three: BSB BSB: For there are three that testify:
8 DBY the Spirit, and the water, and the blood; and the three agree in one. BSB BSB: the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and these three are in agreement.
God’s Testimony about His Son 9 DBY If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater. For this is the witness of God which he has witnessed concerning his Son. BSB BSB: Even if we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is greater. For this is the testimony that God has given about His Son.
10 DBY He that believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself; he that does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the witness which God has witnessed concerning his Son. BSB BSB: Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him; whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given about His Son.
12 DBY He that has the Son has life: he that has not the Son of God has not life. BSB BSB: Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Effective Prayer 14 DBY And this is the boldness which we have towards him, that if we ask him anything according to his will he hears us. BSB BSB: And this is the confidence that we have before Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
15 DBY And if we know that he hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him. BSB BSB: And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we already possess what we have asked of Him.
16 DBY If any one see his brother sinning a sin not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life, for those that do not sin unto death. There is a sin to death: I do not say of that that he should make a request. BSB BSB: If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he should ask God, who will give life to those who commit this kind of sin. There is a sin that leads to death; I am not saying he should ask regarding that sin.
17 DBY Every unrighteousness is sin; and there is a sin not to death. BSB BSB: All unrighteousness is sin, yet there is sin that does not lead to death.
The True God 18 DBY We know that every one begotten of God does not sin, but he that has been begotten of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. BSB BSB: We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning; the One who was born of God protects him, and the evil one cannot touch him.
19 DBY We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the wicked one . BSB BSB: We know that we are of God, and that the whole world is under the power of the evil one.
20 DBY And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us an understanding that we should know him that is true; and we are in him that is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. BSB BSB: And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
21 DBY Children, keep yourselves from idols. BSB BSB: Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
