A Greeting from Peter (1 Peter 1:1–2)
DBY Simon Peter, bondman and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have received like precious faith with us through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ: BSB BSB: Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
DBY Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. BSB BSB: Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
Partakers of the Divine Nature 3 DBY As his divine power has given to us all things which relate to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that has called us by glory and virtue, BSB BSB: His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
DBY But for this very reason also, using therewith all diligence, in your faith have also virtue, in virtue knowledge, BSB BSB: For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge;
DBY in knowledge temperance, in temperance endurance, in endurance godliness, BSB BSB: and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
DBY in godliness brotherly love, in brotherly love love: BSB BSB: and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
DBY for these things existing and abounding in you make you to be neither idle nor unfruitful as regards the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ; BSB BSB: For if you possess these qualities and continue to grow in them, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
DBY for he with whom these things are not present is blind, short-sighted, and has forgotten the purging of his former sins. BSB BSB: But whoever lacks these traits is nearsighted to the point of blindness, having forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.
DBY Wherefore the rather, brethren, use diligence to make your calling and election sure, for doing these things ye will never fall; BSB BSB: Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure. For if you practice these things you will never stumble,
DBY for thus shall the entrance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ be richly furnished unto you. BSB BSB: and you will receive a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
DBY Wherefore I will be careful to put you always in mind of these things, although knowing them and established in the present truth. BSB BSB: Therefore I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth you now have.
DBY But I account it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance, BSB BSB: I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of my body,
DBY knowing that the putting off of my tabernacle is speedily to take place , as also our Lord Jesus Christ has manifested to me; BSB BSB: because I know that this tent will soon be laid aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
DBY but I will use diligence, that after my departure ye should have also, at any time, in your power to call to mind these things. BSB BSB: And I will make every effort to ensure that after my departure, you will be able to recall these things at all times.
Eyewitnesses of His Majesty (Matthew 17:1–13; Mark 9:1–13; Luke 9:28–36)
DBY For he received from God the Father honour and glory, such a voice being uttered to him by the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my delight; BSB BSB: For He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
DBY and this voice we heard uttered from heaven, being with him on the holy mountain. BSB BSB: And we ourselves heard this voice from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
DBY And we have the prophetic word made surer, to which ye do well taking heed (as to a lamp shining in an obscure place) until the day dawn and the morning star arise in your hearts; BSB BSB: We also have the word of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt. And you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
DBY knowing this first, that the scope of no prophecy of scripture is had from its own particular interpretation, BSB BSB: Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation.
DBY for prophecy was not ever uttered by the will of man, but holy men of God spake under the power of the Holy Spirit. BSB BSB: For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
