The Greatest Commandment (Matthew 22:34–40; Mark 12:28–34)
1 DBY And these are the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances, which Jehovah your God commanded to teach you, that ye may do them in the land whereunto ye pass over to possess it, BSB BSB: These are the commandments and statutes and ordinances that the LORD your God has instructed me to teach you to follow in the land that you are about to enter and possess,
2 DBY that thou mayest fear Jehovah thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. BSB BSB: so that you and your children and grandchildren may fear the LORD your God all the days of your lives by keeping all His statutes and commandments that I give you, and so that your days may be prolonged.
3 DBY And thou shalt hear, Israel, and take heed to do them ; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase greatly, as Jehovah the God of thy fathers hath said unto thee, in a land flowing with milk and honey. BSB BSB: Hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you.
5 DBY and thou shalt love Jehovah thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength. BSB BSB: And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
6 DBY And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thy heart; BSB BSB: These words I am commanding you today are to be upon your hearts.
7 DBY and thou shalt impress them on thy sons, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou goest on the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. BSB BSB: And you shall teach them diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
8 DBY And thou shalt bind them for a sign on thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes. BSB BSB: Tie them as reminders on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
9 DBY And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and upon thy gates. BSB BSB: Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.
10 DBY And it shall be, when Jehovah thy God bringeth thee into the land which he swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee: great and good cities which thou buildedst not, BSB BSB: And when the LORD your God brings you into the land He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that He would give you—a land with great and splendid cities that you did not build,
11 DBY and houses full of everything good which thou filledst not, and wells digged which thou diggedst not, vineyards and oliveyards which thou plantedst not, and thou shalt have eaten and shalt be full; BSB BSB: with houses full of every good thing with which you did not fill them, with wells that you did not dig, and with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant—and when you eat and are satisfied,
12 DBY then beware lest thou forget Jehovah who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.BSB BSB: be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
13 DBY Thou shalt fear Jehovah thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. BSB BSB: Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name.
14 DBY Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples that are round about you; BSB BSB: Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you.
15 DBY for Jehovah thy God is a jealous God in thy midst; lest the anger of Jehovah thy God be kindled against thee, and he destroy thee from the face of the earth. BSB BSB: For the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God. Otherwise the anger of the LORD your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you off the face of the earth.
16 DBY Ye shall not tempt Jehovah your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. BSB BSB: Do not test the LORD your God as you tested Him at Massah.
17 DBY Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of Jehovah your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee. BSB BSB: You are to diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God and the testimonies and statutes He has given you.
18 DBY And thou shalt do what is right and good in the sight of Jehovah, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest enter in and possess the good land which Jehovah swore unto thy fathers, BSB BSB: Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, so that it may be well with you and that you may enter and possess the good land that the LORD your God swore to give your fathers,
19 DBY thrusting out all thine enemies from before thee, as Jehovah hath spoken. BSB BSB: driving out all your enemies before you, as the LORD has said.
Teach Your Children 20 DBY When thy son shall ask thee in time to come, saying, What are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which Jehovah our God hath commanded you? BSB BSB: In the future, when your son asks, “What is the meaning of the decrees and statutes and ordinances that the LORD our God has commanded you?”
21 DBY then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and Jehovah brought us out of Egypt with a powerful hand; BSB BSB: then you are to tell him, “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
22 DBY and Jehovah shewed signs and wonders, great and grievous, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes; BSB BSB: Before our eyes the LORD inflicted great and devastating signs and wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his household.
23 DBY and he brought us out thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he swore unto our fathers. BSB BSB: But He brought us out from there to lead us in and give us the land that He had sworn to our fathers.
24 DBY And Jehovah commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Jehovah our God, for our good continually, that he might preserve us alive, as it is this day. BSB BSB: And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes and to fear the LORD our God, that we may always be prosperous and preserved, as we are to this day.
25 DBY And it shall be our righteousness if we take heed to do all these commandments before Jehovah our God, as he hath commanded us. BSB BSB: And if we are careful to observe every one of these commandments before the LORD our God, as He has commanded us, then that will be our righteousness.”
