Water from the Rock (Numbers 20:1–13)
DBY And all the assembly of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, according to their journeys, at the command of Jehovah; and they encamped in Rephidim; and there was no water for the people to drink. BSB BSB: Then the whole congregation of Israel left the Desert of Sin, moving from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.
DBY And the people contended with Moses, and said, Give us water, that we may drink! And Moses said to them, Why do ye dispute with me? Why do ye tempt Jehovah? BSB BSB: So the people contended with Moses, “Give us water to drink.” “Why do you contend with me?” Moses replied. “Why do you test the LORD?”
DBY And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Why is it that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst? BSB BSB: But the people thirsted for water there, and they grumbled against Moses: “Why have you brought us out of Egypt—to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”
DBY And Moses cried to Jehovah, saying, What shall I do with this people? Yet a little, and they will stone me! BSB BSB: Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What should I do with these people? A little more and they will stone me!”
DBY And Jehovah said to Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel, and thy staff with which thou didst smite the river, take in thy hand, and go. BSB BSB: And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take along in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
DBY Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock on Horeb; and thou shalt strike the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so before the eyes of the elders of Israel. BSB BSB: Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. And when you strike the rock, water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.
DBY And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they had tempted Jehovah, saying, Is Jehovah among us, or not? BSB BSB: He named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”
The Defeat of the Amalekites 8 DBY And Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. BSB BSB: After this, the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.
DBY And Moses said to Joshua, Choose us men, and go out, fight with Amalek; to-morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand. BSB BSB: So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop with the staff of God in my hand.”
DBY And Joshua did as Moses had said to him, to fight with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill. BSB BSB: Joshua did as Moses had instructed him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
DBY And it came to pass when Moses raised his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. BSB BSB: As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered them, Amalek prevailed.
DBY And Moses' hands were heavy; then they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on this side, and one on that side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. BSB BSB: When Moses’ hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on each side, so that his hands remained steady until the sun went down.
DBY And Joshua broke the power of Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. BSB BSB: So Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his army with the sword.
DBY And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi. BSB BSB: And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner.
DBY And he said, For the hand is on the throne of Jah; Jehovah will have war with Amalek from generation to generation! BSB BSB: “Indeed,” he said, “a hand was lifted up toward the throne of the LORD. The LORD will war against Amalek from generation to generation.”
