The Soul Who Sins Will Die 2 DBY What mean ye, ye who use this proverb of the land of Israel, saying, The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? BSB BSB: “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge’?
DBY As I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, ye shall not have any more to use this proverb in Israel.BSB BSB: As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.
DBY Behold, all the souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. BSB BSB: Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son are Mine. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
DBY And if a man be righteous, and do judgment and justice: BSB BSB: Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just and right:
DBY — he hath not eaten upon the mountains, nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, nor come near to a woman in her separation, BSB BSB: He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her period.
DBY and hath not oppressed any; he hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath not exercised robbery, hath given his bread to the hungry, and covered the naked with a garment; BSB BSB: He does not oppress another, but restores the pledge to the debtor. He does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.
DBY he hath not given forth upon usury, nor taken increase; he hath withdrawn his hand from unrighteousness, hath executed true judgment between man and man, BSB BSB: He does not engage in usury or take excess interest, but he withholds his hand from iniquity and executes true justice between men.
DBY hath walked in my statutes, and kept mine ordinances, to deal faithfully: he is righteous, he shall certainly live, saith the Lord Jehovah. BSB BSB: He follows My statutes and faithfully keeps My ordinances. That man is righteous; surely he will live, declares the Lord GOD.
DBY And if he have begotten a son that is violent, a shedder of blood, and that doeth only one of any of these things , BSB BSB: Now suppose that man has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these things,
DBY and that doeth not any of those duties , but also hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife, BSB BSB: though the father has done none of them: Indeed, the son eats at the mountain and defiles his neighbor’s wife.
DBY hath oppressed the poor and needy, exercised robbery, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, committed abomination, BSB BSB: He oppresses the poor and needy; he commits robbery and does not restore a pledge. He lifts his eyes to idols; he commits abominations.
DBY given forth upon usury, and taken increase; shall he then live? He shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall certainly die; his blood shall be upon him. BSB BSB: He engages in usury and takes excess interest. Will this son live? He will not! Since he has committed all these abominations, he will surely die; his blood will be on his own head.
DBY But lo, if he have begotten a son that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like: BSB BSB: Now suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father has committed, considers them, and does not do likewise:
DBY — he hath not eaten upon the mountains, nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel; he hath not defiled his neighbour's wife, BSB BSB: He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife.
DBY and hath not oppressed any, nor withholden the pledge, neither hath exercised robbery; he hath given his bread to the hungry, and covered the naked with a garment; BSB BSB: He does not oppress another, or retain a pledge, or commit robbery. He gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.
DBY he hath withdrawn his hand from the poor, hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, and walked in my statutes: he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall certainly live. BSB BSB: He withholds his hand from harming the poor and takes no interest or usury. He keeps My ordinances and follows My statutes. Such a man will not die for his father’s iniquity. He will surely live.
DBY As for his father, because he practised oppression, exercised robbery upon his brother, and did what was not good among his people, behold, he shall die in his iniquity. BSB BSB: As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what was wrong among his people.
DBY And ye say, Why doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? But the son hath done judgment and justice, hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them; he shall certainly live. BSB BSB: Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son bear the iniquity of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will surely live.
DBY And the wicked, if he turn from all his sins which he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do judgment and justice, he shall certainly live, he shall not die. BSB BSB: But if the wicked man turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.
DBY None of his transgressions which he hath committed shall be remembered against him; in his righteousness which he hath done shall he live. BSB BSB: None of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him. Because of the righteousness he has practiced, he will live.
DBY Have I any pleasure at all in the death of the wicked? saith the Lord Jehovah; is it not in his turning from his way, that he may live? BSB BSB: Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Lord GOD. Wouldn’t I prefer that he turn from his ways and live?
DBY And when the righteous turneth from his righteousness and practiseth what is wrong, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked doeth, shall he live? None of his righteous acts which he hath done shall be remembered: in his unfaithfulness which he hath wrought, and in his sin which he hath sinned, in them shall he die. BSB BSB: But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, committing the same abominations as the wicked, will he live? None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness and sin he has committed, he will die.
DBY And ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear then, house of Israel. Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? BSB BSB: Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is it My way that is unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
DBY When the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and practiseth what is wrong, and dieth for it; in his wrong that he hath done shall he die. BSB BSB: If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, he will die for this. He will die because of the iniquity he has committed.
DBY And when the wicked turneth from his wickedness which he hath committed, and doeth judgment and justice, he shall keep his soul alive. BSB BSB: But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life.
DBY Because he considereth, and turneth from all his transgressions which he hath committed, he shall certainly live, he shall not die. BSB BSB: Because he considered and turned from all the transgressions he had committed, he will surely live; he will not die.
DBY But the house of Israel say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? Is it not your ways that are unequal? BSB BSB: Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are My ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
DBY Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord Jehovah. Return ye, and turn from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your snare. BSB BSB: Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so that your iniquity will not become your downfall.
DBY Cast away from you all your transgressions wherewith ye have transgressed, and make you a new heart and a new spirit: why then will ye die, house of Israel? BSB BSB: Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions you have committed, and fashion for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel?
DBY For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord Jehovah; therefore turn ye and live. BSB BSB: For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death, declares the Lord GOD. So repent and live!
