The Council at Jerusalem (Acts 15:5–21)
DBY and I went up according to revelation, and I laid before them the glad tidings which I preach among the nations, but privately to those conspicuous among them , lest in any way I run or had run in vain; BSB BSB: I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I spoke privately to those recognized as leaders, for fear that I was running or had already run in vain.
DBY (but neither was Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, compelled to be circumcised;) BSB BSB: Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.
DBY and it was on account of the false brethren brought in surreptitiously, who came in surreptitiously to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage; BSB BSB: This issue arose because some false brothers had come in under false pretenses to spy on our freedom in Christ Jesus, in order to enslave us.
DBY to whom we yielded in subjection not even for an hour, that the truth of the glad tidings might remain with you. BSB BSB: We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.
DBY But from those who were conspicuous as being somewhat — whatsoever they were, it makes no difference to me: God does not accept man's person; for to me those who were conspicuous communicated nothing; BSB BSB: But as for the highly esteemed—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism—those leaders added nothing to me.
DBY but, on the contrary, seeing that the glad tidings of the uncircumcision were confided to me, even as to Peter that of the circumcision, BSB BSB: On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted to preach the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised.
DBY (for he that wrought in Peter for the apostleship of the circumcision wrought also in me towards the Gentiles,) BSB BSB: For the One who was at work in Peter’s apostleship to the circumcised was also at work in my apostleship to the Gentiles.
DBY and recognising the grace given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were conspicuous as being pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship, that we should go to the nations, and they to the circumcision; BSB BSB: And recognizing the grace that I had been given, James, Cephas, and John—those reputed to be pillars—gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised. 10 DBY only that we should remember the poor, which same thing also I was diligent to do. BSB BSB: They only asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
Paul Confronts Cephas 11 DBY But when Peter came to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be condemned: BSB BSB: When Cephas came to Antioch, however, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.
DBY for before that certain came from James, he ate with those of the nations; but when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those of the circumcision; BSB BSB: For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself, for fear of those in the circumcision group.
DBY and the rest of the Jews also played the same dissembling part with him; so that even Barnabas was carried away too by their dissimulation. BSB BSB: The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.
DBY But when I saw that they do not walk straightforwardly, according to the truth of the glad tidings, I said to Peter before all, If thou, being a Jew, livest as the nations and not as the Jews, how dost thou compel the nations to Judaize? BSB BSB: When I saw that they were not walking in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
DBY We, Jews by nature, and not sinners of the nations, BSB BSB: We who are Jews by birth and not Gentile “sinners”
DBY but knowing that a man is not justified on the principle of works of law nor but by the faith of Jesus Christ, we also have believed on Christ Jesus, that we might be justified on the principle of the faith of Christ; and not of works of law; because on the principle of works of law no flesh shall be justified. BSB BSB: know that a man is not justified by works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
DBY Now if in seeking to be justified in Christ we also have been found sinners, then is Christ minister of sin? Far be the thought. BSB BSB: But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ, we ourselves are found to be sinners, does that make Christ a minister of sin? Certainly not!
DBY For if the things I have thrown down, these I build again, I constitute myself a transgressor. BSB BSB: If I rebuild what I have already torn down, I prove myself to be a lawbreaker.
DBY For I, through law, have died to law, that I may live to God. BSB BSB: For through the law I died to the law so that I might live to God.
DBY I am crucified with Christ, and no longer live, I, but Christ lives in me; but in that I now live in flesh, I live by faith, the faith of the Son of God, who has loved me and given himself for me. BSB BSB: I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
DBY I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness is by law, then Christ has died for nothing. BSB BSB: I do not set aside the grace of God. For if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.
