Freedom in Christ 2 DBY Behold, I, Paul, say to you, that if ye are circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. BSB BSB: Take notice: I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all.
3 DBY And I witness again to every man who is circumcised, that he is debtor to do the whole law. BSB BSB: Again I testify to every man who gets himself circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.
4 DBY Ye are deprived of all profit from the Christ as separated from him , as many as are justified by law; ye have fallen from grace. BSB BSB: You who are trying to be justified by the law have been severed from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.
5 DBY For we, by the Spirit, on the principle of faith, await the hope of righteousness. BSB BSB: But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the hope of righteousness.
7 DBY Ye ran well; who has stopped you that ye should not obey the truth? BSB BSB: You were running so well. Who has obstructed you from obeying the truth?
8 DBY The persuasibleness is not of him that calls you. BSB BSB: Such persuasion does not come from the One who calls you.
9 DBY A little leaven leavens the whole lump. BSB BSB: A little leaven works through the whole batch of dough.
10 DBY I have confidence as to you in the Lord, that ye will have no other mind; and he that is troubling you shall bear the guilt of it , whosoever he may be. BSB BSB: I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is troubling you will bear the judgment, whoever he may be.
11 DBY But I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why am I yet persecuted? Then the scandal of the cross has been done away. BSB BSB: Now, brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.
12 DBY I would that they would even cut themselves off who throw you into confusion. BSB BSB: As for those who are agitating you, I wish they would proceed to emasculate themselves!
13 DBY For ye have been called to liberty, brethren; only do not turn liberty into an opportunity to the flesh, but by love serve one another. BSB BSB: For you, brothers, were called to freedom; but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, serve one another in love.
14 DBY For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, in Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; BSB BSB: The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
15 DBY but if ye bite and devour one another, see that ye are not consumed one of another. BSB BSB: But if you keep on biting and devouring one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.
Walking by the Spirit (Ezekiel 36:16–38; Romans 8:9–11)
16 DBY But I say, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall no way fulfil flesh's lust. BSB BSB: So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
17 DBY For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these things are opposed one to the other, that ye should not do those things which ye desire; BSB BSB: For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want.
18 DBY but if ye are led by the Spirit, ye are not under law. BSB BSB: But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 DBY Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are fornication, uncleanness, licentiousness, BSB BSB: The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery;
20 DBY idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strifes, jealousies, angers, contentions, disputes, schools of opinion, BSB BSB: idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions,
21 DBY envyings, murders, drunkennesses, revels, and things like these; as to which I tell you beforehand, even as I also have said before, that they who do such things shall not inherit God's kingdom. BSB BSB: and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 DBY But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, fidelity, BSB BSB: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 DBY meekness, self-control: against such things there is no law. BSB BSB: gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24 DBY But they that are of the Christ have crucified the flesh with the passions and the lusts. BSB BSB: Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25 DBY If we live by the Spirit, let us walk also by the Spirit. BSB BSB: Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit.
26 DBY Let us not become vain-glorious, provoking one another, envying one another. BSB BSB: Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying one another.
