Dan and Naphtali 1 DBY And when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said to Jacob, Give me children, or else I die. BSB BSB: When Rachel saw that she was not bearing any children for Jacob, she envied her sister. “Give me children, or I will die!” she said to Jacob.
DBY And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, Am I in God's stead, who has withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? BSB BSB: Jacob became angry with Rachel and said, “Am I in the place of God, who has withheld children from you?”
DBY And she said, Behold, there is my maid, Bilhah: go in to her, in order that she may bear on my knees, and I may also be built up by her. BSB BSB: Then she said, “Here is my maidservant Bilhah. Sleep with her, that she may bear children for me, so that through her I too can build a family.”
DBY And she gave him Bilhah her maidservant as wife, and Jacob went in to her. BSB BSB: So Rachel gave Jacob her servant Bilhah as a wife, and he slept with her,
DBY And Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son. BSB BSB: and Bilhah conceived and bore him a son.
DBY And Rachel said, God has done me justice, and has also heard my voice, and given me a son; therefore she called his name Dan. BSB BSB: Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; He has heard my plea and given me a son.” So she named him Dan.
DBY And Bilhah Rachel's maidservant again conceived, and bore Jacob a second son. BSB BSB: And Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.
DBY And Rachel said, Wrestlings of God have I wrestled with my sister, and have prevailed; and she called his name Naphtali. BSB BSB: Then Rachel said, “In my great struggles, I have wrestled with my sister and won.” So she named him Naphtali.
Gad and Asher 9 DBY And when Leah saw that she had ceased to bear, she took Zilpah her maidservant and gave her to Jacob as wife. BSB BSB: When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife.
DBY And Zilpah Leah's maidservant bore Jacob a son. BSB BSB: And Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.
DBY And Leah said, Fortunately! and she called his name Gad. BSB BSB: Then Leah said, “How fortunate!” So she named him Gad.
DBY And Zilpah Leah's maidservant bore Jacob a second son. BSB BSB: When Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son,
DBY And Leah said, Happy am I; for the daughters will call me blessed! and she called his name Asher. BSB BSB: Leah said, “How happy I am! For the women call me happy.” So she named him Asher.
DBY And Reuben went out in the days of wheat-harvest, and found mandrakes in the fields; and he brought them to his mother Leah. And Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son's mandrakes. BSB BSB: Now during the wheat harvest, Reuben went out and found some mandrakes in the field. When he brought them to his mother, Rachel begged Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
DBY And she said to her, Is it too little that thou hast taken my husband, that thou wilt take my son's mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to-night for thy son's mandrakes. BSB BSB: But Leah replied, “Is it not enough that you have taken away my husband? Now you want to take my son’s mandrakes as well?” “Very well,” said Rachel, “he may sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”
DBY And when Jacob came from the fields in the evening, Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in to me, for indeed I have hired thee with my son's mandrakes. And he lay with her that night. BSB BSB: When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come with me, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he slept with her that night.
Issachar, Zebulun, and Dinah 17 DBY And God hearkened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son. BSB BSB: And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore a fifth son to Jacob.
DBY And Leah said, God has given me my hire, because I have given my maidservant to my husband; and she called his name Issachar. BSB BSB: Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my maidservant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.
DBY And Leah again conceived, and bore Jacob a sixth son; BSB BSB: Again Leah conceived and bore a sixth son to Jacob.
DBY and Leah said, God has endowed me with a good dowry; this time will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons. And she called his name Zebulun. BSB BSB: “God has given me a good gift,” she said. “This time my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” And she named him Zebulun.
DBY And afterwards she bore a daughter, and called her name Dinah. BSB BSB: After that, Leah gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
Joseph 22 DBY And God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her, and opened her womb. BSB BSB: Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her and opened her womb,
DBY And she conceived, and bore a son, and said, God has taken away my reproach. BSB BSB: and she conceived and gave birth to a son. “God has taken away my shame,” she said.
DBY And she called his name Joseph; and said, Jehovah will add to me another son. BSB BSB: She named him Joseph, and said, “May the LORD add to me another son.”
Jacob Prospers 25 DBY And it came to pass when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, that I may go to my place and to my country. BSB BSB: Now after Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way so I can return to my homeland.
DBY Give me my wives for whom I have served thee, and my children; that I may go away, for thou knowest my service which I have served thee. BSB BSB: Give me my wives and children for whom I have served you, that I may go on my way. You know how hard I have worked for you.”
DBY And Laban said to him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes — I have discovered that Jehovah has blessed me for thy sake. BSB BSB: But Laban replied, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you.”
DBY And he said, Appoint to me thy wages, and I will give it. BSB BSB: And he added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.”
DBY And he said to him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and what thy cattle has become with me. BSB BSB: Then Jacob answered, “You know how I have served you and how your livestock have thrived under my care.
DBY For it was little that thou hadst before me, and it is increased to a multitude, and Jehovah has blessed thee from the time I came; and now, when shall I also provide for my house? BSB BSB: Indeed, you had very little before my arrival, but now your wealth has increased many times over. The LORD has blessed you wherever I set foot. But now, when may I also provide for my own household?”
DBY And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me anything. If thou doest this for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock: BSB BSB: “What can I give you?” Laban asked. “You do not need to give me anything,” Jacob replied. “If you do this one thing for me, I will keep on shepherding and keeping your flocks.
DBY I will pass through all thy flock to-day, to remove thence all the speckled and spotted sheep, and all the brown lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and that shall be my hire. BSB BSB: Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb, and every spotted or speckled goat. These will be my wages.
DBY And my righteousness shall answer for me hereafter, when thou comest about my hire, before thy face: all that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the lambs, let that be stolen with me. BSB BSB: So my honesty will testify for me when you come to check on my wages in the future. If I have any goats that are not speckled or spotted, or any lambs that are not dark-colored, they will be considered stolen.”
DBY And Laban said, Well, let it be according to thy word. BSB BSB: “Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.”
DBY And he removed that day the he-goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white in it, and all the brown among the lambs, and gave them into the hand of his sons. BSB BSB: That very day Laban removed all the streaked or spotted male goats and every speckled or spotted female goat—every one that had any white on it—and every dark-colored lamb, and he placed them under the care of his sons.
DBY And he put three days' journey between himself and Jacob. And Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flock. BSB BSB: Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob was shepherding the rest of Laban’s flocks.
DBY And Jacob took fresh rods of white poplar, almond-tree, and maple; and peeled off white stripes in them, uncovering the white which was on the rods. BSB BSB: Jacob, however, took fresh branches of poplar, almond, and plane trees, and peeled the bark, exposing the white inner wood of the branches.
DBY And he set the rods which he had peeled before the flock, in the troughs at the watering-places where the flock came to drink, and they were ardent when they came to drink. BSB BSB: Then he set the peeled branches in the watering troughs in front of the flocks coming in to drink. So when the flocks were in heat and came to drink,
DBY And the flock was ardent before the rods; and the flock brought forth ringstraked, speckled, and spotted. BSB BSB: they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.
DBY And Jacob separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flock toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he made himself separate flocks, and did not put them with Laban's flock. BSB BSB: Jacob set apart the young, but made the rest face the streaked dark-colored sheep in Laban’s flocks. Then he set his own stock apart and did not put them with Laban’s animals.
DBY And it came to pass whensoever the strong cattle were ardent, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, that they might become ardent among the rods; BSB BSB: Whenever the stronger females of the flock were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs, in full view of the animals, so that they would breed in front of the branches.
DBY but when the sheep were feeble, he put them not in; so the feeble were Laban's, and the strong Jacob's. BSB BSB: But if the animals were weak, he did not set out the branches. So the weaker animals went to Laban and the stronger ones to Jacob.
DBY And the man increased very, very much, and had much cattle, and bondwomen, and bondmen, and camels, and asses. BSB BSB: Thus Jacob became exceedingly prosperous. He owned large flocks, maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys.
