The Sabbath Rest (Genesis 2:1–3; Exodus 16:22–30)
DBY Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you might seem to have failed of it . BSB BSB: Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it.
DBY For indeed we have had glad tidings presented to us, even as they also; but the word of the report did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard. BSB BSB: For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.
DBY For we enter into the rest who have believed; as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, If they shall enter into my rest; although the works had been completed from the foundation of the world. BSB BSB: Now we who have believed enter that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said: “So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’” And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world.
DBY For he has said somewhere of the seventh day thus, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works: BSB BSB: For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all His works.”
DBY and in this again, If they shall enter into my rest. BSB BSB: And again, as He says in the passage above: “They shall never enter My rest.”
DBY Seeing therefore it remains that some enter into it, and those who first received the glad tidings did not enter in on account of not hearkening to the word, BSB BSB: Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
DBY again he determines a certain day, saying, in David, 'To-day,' after so long a time; (according as it has been said before), To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. BSB BSB: God again designated a certain day as “Today,” when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
DBY For if Jesus had brought them into rest, he would not have spoken afterwards about another day. BSB BSB: For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
DBY There remains then a sabbatism to the people of God. BSB BSB: There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
DBY For he that has entered into his rest, he also has rested from his works, as God did from his own. BSB BSB: For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His.
DBY Let us therefore use diligence to enter into that rest, that no one may fall after the same example of not hearkening to the word. BSB BSB: Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience.
The Living Word (2 Timothy 3:10–17)
DBY For the word of God is living and operative, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and penetrating to the division of soul and spirit, both of joints and marrow, and a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. BSB BSB: For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
DBY And there is not a creature unapparent before him; but all things are naked and laid bare to his eyes, with whom we have to do. BSB BSB: Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
DBY Having therefore a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast the confession. BSB BSB: Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess.
DBY Let us approach therefore with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and find grace for seasonable help. BSB BSB: Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
