The Root of Jesse 1 DBY And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots shall be fruitful; BSB BSB: Then a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.
2 DBY and the Spirit of Jehovah shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Jehovah. BSB BSB: The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.
3 DBY And his delight will be in the fear of Jehovah; and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears; BSB BSB: And He will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what His eyes see, and He will not decide by what His ears hear,
4 DBY but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. BSB BSB: but with righteousness He will judge the poor, and with equity He will decide for the lowly of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth and slay the wicked with the breath of His lips.
5 DBY And righteousness shall be the girdle of his reins, and faithfulness the girdle of his loins. BSB BSB: Righteousness will be the belt around His hips, and faithfulness the sash around His waist.
7 DBY And the cow and the she-bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. BSB BSB: The cow will graze with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
8 DBY And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the adder, and the weaned child shall put forth its hand to the viper's den. BSB BSB: The infant will play by the cobra’s den, and the toddler will reach into the viper’s nest.
9 DBY They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of Jehovah, as the waters cover the sea. BSB BSB: They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the sea is full of water.
10 DBY And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, standing as a banner of the peoples: the nations shall seek it; and his resting-place shall be glory. BSB BSB: On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His place of rest will be glorious.
11 DBY And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to acquire the remnant of his people which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. BSB BSB: On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time to recover the remnant of His people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
12 DBY And he shall lift up a banner to the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. BSB BSB: He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; He will collect the scattered of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
13 DBY And the envy of Ephraim shall depart, and the troublers of Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim will not envy Judah, and Judah will not trouble Ephraim: BSB BSB: Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart, and the adversaries of Judah will be cut off. Ephraim will no longer envy Judah, nor will Judah harass Ephraim.
14 DBY but they shall fly upon the shoulder of the Philistines towards the west; together shall they spoil the sons of the east; they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab, and the children of Ammon shall obey them. BSB BSB: They will swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines to the west; together they will plunder the sons of the east. They will lay their hands on Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites will be subject to them.
15 DBY And Jehovah will utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind will he shake his hand over the river, and will smite it into seven streams, and make men go over dryshod. BSB BSB: The LORD will devote to destruction the gulf of the Sea of Egypt; with a scorching wind He will sweep His hand over the Euphrates. He will split it into seven streams for men to cross with dry sandals.
16 DBY And there shall be a highway for the remnant of his people which will be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day when he went up out of the land of Egypt. BSB BSB: There will be a highway for the remnant of His people who remain from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
