Jesus Appears by the Sea of Tiberias 1 DBY After these things Jesus manifested himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. And he manifested himself thus. BSB BSB: Later, by the Sea of Tiberias, Jesus again revealed Himself to the disciples. He made Himself known in this way:
DBY There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael who was of Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. BSB BSB: Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.
DBY Simon Peter says to them, I go to fish. They say to him, We also come with thee. They went forth, and went on board, and that night took nothing. BSB BSB: Simon Peter told them, “I am going fishing.” “We will go with you,” they said. So they went out and got into the boat, but caught nothing that night.
DBY And early morn already breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; the disciples however did not know that it was Jesus. BSB BSB: Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize that it was Jesus.
DBY Jesus therefore says to them, Children, have ye anything to eat? They answered him, No. BSB BSB: So He called out to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” “No,” they answered.
DBY And he said to them, Cast the net at the right side of the ship and ye will find. They cast therefore, and they could no longer draw it, from the multitude of fishes. BSB BSB: He told them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it there, and they were unable to haul it in because of the great number of fish.
DBY That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved says to Peter, It is the Lord. Simon Peter therefore, having heard that it was the Lord, girded his overcoat on him (for he was naked), and cast himself into the sea; BSB BSB: Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it) and jumped into the sea.
DBY and the other disciples came in the small boat, for they were not far from the land, but somewhere about two hundred cubits, dragging the net of fishes. BSB BSB: The other disciples came ashore in the boat. They dragged in the net full of fish, for they were not far from land, only about a hundred yards.
DBY When therefore they went out on the land, they see a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. BSB BSB: When they landed, they saw a charcoal fire there with fish on it, and some bread.
DBY Jesus says to them, Bring of the fishes which ye have now taken. BSB BSB: Jesus told them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”
DBY Simon Peter went up and drew the net to the land full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty-three; and though there were so many, the net was not rent. BSB BSB: So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many, the net was not torn.
DBY Jesus says to them, Come and dine. But none of the disciples dared inquire of him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. BSB BSB: “Come, have breakfast,” Jesus said to them. None of the disciples dared to ask Him, “Who are You?” They knew it was the Lord.
DBY Jesus comes and takes the bread and gives it to them, and the fish in like manner. BSB BSB: Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and He did the same with the fish.
DBY This is already the third time that Jesus had been manifested to the disciples, being risen from among the dead. BSB BSB: This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after He was raised from the dead.
Jesus and Peter 15 DBY When therefore they had dined, Jesus says to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He says to him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I am attached to thee. He says to him, Feed my lambs. BSB BSB: When they had finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love Me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus replied, “Feed My lambs.”
DBY He says to him again a second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He says to him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I am attached to thee. He says to him, Shepherd my sheep. BSB BSB: Jesus asked a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” “Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus told him, “Shepherd My sheep.”
DBY He says to him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, art thou attached to me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Art thou attached to me? and said to him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I am attached to thee. Jesus says to him, Feed my sheep. BSB BSB: Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was deeply hurt that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me?” “Lord, You know all things,” he replied. “You know I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.
DBY Verily, verily, I say to thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst where thou desiredst; but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and bring thee where thou dost not desire. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked where you wanted; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 DBY But he said this signifying by what death he should glorify God. And having said this, he says to him, Follow me. BSB BSB: Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. And after He had said this, He told him, “Follow Me.”
Jesus and the Beloved Disciple 21 DBY Peter, seeing him, says to Jesus, Lord, and what of this man ? BSB BSB: When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
DBY Jesus says to him, If I will that he abide until I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou me. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you? You follow Me!”
DBY This word therefore went out among the brethren, That disciple does not die. And Jesus did not say to him, He does not die; but, If I will that he abide until I come, what is that to thee? BSB BSB: Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. However, Jesus did not say that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you?”
DBY And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which if they were written one by one, I suppose that not even the world itself would contain the books written. BSB BSB: There are many more things that Jesus did. If all of them were written down, I suppose that not even the world itself would have space for the books that would be written.
