Jesus and the Samaritan Woman 1 DBY When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus makes and baptises more disciples than John BSB BSB: When Jesus realized that the Pharisees were aware He was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John
DBY (however, Jesus himself did not baptise, but his disciples), BSB BSB: (although it was not Jesus who baptized, but His disciples),
DBY he left Judaea and went away again unto Galilee. BSB BSB: He left Judea and returned to Galilee.
DBY And he must needs pass through Samaria. BSB BSB: Now He had to pass through Samaria.
DBY He comes therefore to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near to the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph. BSB BSB: So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
DBY Now a fountain of Jacob's was there; Jesus therefore, being wearied with the way he had come, sat just as he was at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour. BSB BSB: Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, weary from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
DBY A woman comes out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus says to her, Give me to drink BSB BSB: When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
DBY (for his disciples had gone away into the city that they might buy provisions). BSB BSB: (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
DBY The Samaritan woman therefore says to him, How dost thou, being a Jew, ask to drink of me who am a Samaritan woman? for Jews have no intercourse with Samaritans. BSB BSB: “You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
DBY Jesus answered and said to her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that says to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
DBY The woman says to him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou the living water? BSB BSB: “Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water?
DBY Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his sons, and his cattle? BSB BSB: Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock?”
DBY Jesus answered and said to her, Every one who drinks of this water shall thirst again; BSB BSB: Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.
DBY but whosoever drinks of the water which I shall give him shall never thirst for ever, but the water which I shall give him shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life. BSB BSB: But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
DBY The woman says to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst nor come here to draw. BSB BSB: The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
DBY Jesus says to her, Go, call thy husband, and come here. BSB BSB: Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
DBY The woman answered and said, I have not a husband. Jesus says to her, Thou hast well said, I have not a husband; BSB BSB: “I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband.
DBY for thou hast had five husbands, and he whom now thou hast is not thy husband: this thou hast spoken truly. BSB BSB: In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.”
DBY The woman says to him, Sir, I see that thou art a prophet. BSB BSB: “Sir,” the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet.
DBY Jesus says to her, Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when ye shall neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem worship the Father. BSB BSB: “Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
DBY But the hour is coming and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for also the Father seeks such as his worshippers. BSB BSB: But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.
DBY God is a spirit; and they who worship him must worship him in spirit and truth. BSB BSB: God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”
DBY The woman says to him, I know that Messias is coming, who is called Christ; when he comes he will tell us all things. BSB BSB: The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”
DBY Jesus says to her, I who speak to thee am he . BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”
The Disciples Return and Marvel 27 DBY And upon this came his disciples, and wondered that he spoke with a woman; yet no one said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her? BSB BSB: Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
DBY The woman then left her waterpot and went away into the city, and says to the men, BSB BSB: Then the woman left her water jar, went back into the town, and said to the people,
DBY Come, see a man who told me all things I had ever done: is not he the Christ? BSB BSB: “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
DBY They went out of the city and came to him. BSB BSB: So they left the town and made their way toward Jesus.
DBY But meanwhile the disciples asked him saying, Rabbi, eat. BSB BSB: Meanwhile the disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
DBY But he said to them, I have food to eat which ye do not know. BSB BSB: But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
DBY The disciples therefore said to one another, Has any one brought him anything to eat? BSB BSB: So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”
DBY Jesus says to them, My food is that I should do the will of him that has sent me, and that I should finish his work. BSB BSB: Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
DBY Do not ye say, that there are yet four months and the harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes and behold the fields, for they are already white to harvest. BSB BSB: Do you not say, ‘There are still four months until the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ripe for harvest.
DBY He that reaps receives wages and gathers fruit unto life eternal, that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together. BSB BSB: Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.
DBY For in this is verified the true saying, It is one who sows and another who reaps. BSB BSB: For in this case the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
DBY I have sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others have laboured, and ye have entered into their labours. BSB BSB: I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the hard work, and now you have taken up their labor.”
Many Samaritans Believe 39 DBY But many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him because of the word of the woman who bore witness, He told me all things that I had ever done. BSB BSB: Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
DBY When therefore the Samaritans came to him they asked him to abide with them, and he abode there two days. BSB BSB: So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed two days.
DBY And more a great deal believed on account of his word; BSB BSB: And many more believed because of His message.
DBY and they said to the woman, It is no longer on account of thy saying that we believe, for we have heard him ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world. BSB BSB: They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.”
Jesus Heals the Official’s Son (Matthew 8:5–13; Luke 7:1–10)
DBY But after the two days he went forth thence and went away into Galilee, BSB BSB: After two days, Jesus left for Galilee.
DBY for Jesus himself bore witness that a prophet has no honour in his own country. BSB BSB: Now He Himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.
DBY When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem during the feast, for they also went to the feast. BSB BSB: Yet when He arrived, the Galileans welcomed Him. They had seen all the great things He had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they had gone there as well.
DBY He came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain courtier in Capernaum whose son was sick. BSB BSB: So once again He came to Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
DBY He, having heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, went to him and asked him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. BSB BSB: When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.
DBY Jesus therefore said to him, Unless ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe. BSB BSB: Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”
DBY The courtier says to him, Sir, come down ere my child die. BSB BSB: “Sir,” the official said, “come down before my child dies.”
DBY Jesus says to him, Go, thy son lives. And the man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way. BSB BSB: “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.” The man took Jesus at His word and departed.
DBY But already, as he was going down, his servants met him and brought him word saying, Thy child lives. BSB BSB: And while he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.
DBY He inquired therefore from them the hour at which he got better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. BSB BSB: So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered, and they told him, “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.”
DBY The father therefore knew that it was in that hour in which Jesus said to him, Thy son lives; and he believed, himself and his whole house. BSB BSB: Then the father realized that this was the very hour in which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and all his household believed.
DBY This second sign again did Jesus, being come out of Judaea into Galilee. BSB BSB: This was now the second sign that Jesus performed after coming from Judea into Galilee.
