The Woman Caught in Adultery 1 DBY But Jesus went to the mount of Olives. BSB BSB: But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
DBY And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat down and taught them. BSB BSB: Early in the morning He went back into the temple courts. All the people came to Him, and He sat down to teach them.
DBY And the scribes and the Pharisees bring to him a woman taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst, BSB BSB: The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before them
DBY they say to him, Teacher, this woman has been taken in the very act, committing adultery. BSB BSB: and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
DBY Now in the law Moses has commanded us to stone such; thou therefore, what sayest thou? BSB BSB: In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do You say?”
DBY But this they said proving him, that they might have something to accuse him of . But Jesus, having stooped down, wrote with his finger on the ground. BSB BSB: They said this to test Him, in order to have a basis for accusing Him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with His finger.
DBY But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up and said to them, Let him that is without sin among you first cast the stone at her. BSB BSB: When they continued to question Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”
DBY And again stooping down he wrote on the ground. BSB BSB: And again He bent down and wrote on the ground.
DBY But they, having heard that , went out one by one beginning from the elder ones until the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing there. BSB BSB: When they heard this, they began to go away one by one, beginning with the older ones, until only Jesus was left, with the woman standing there.
DBY And Jesus, lifting himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Has no one condemned thee? BSB BSB: Then Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?”
DBY And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. BSB BSB: “No one, Lord,” she answered. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and sin no more.”
Jesus the Light of the World (1 John 1:5–10)
DBY Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. BSB BSB: Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
DBY The Pharisees therefore said to him, Thou bearest witness concerning thyself; thy witness is not true. BSB BSB: So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not valid.”
DBY Jesus answered and said to them, Even if I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is true, because I know whence I came and whither I go: but ye know not whence I come and whither I go. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from or where I am going.
DBY Ye judge according to the flesh, I judge no one. BSB BSB: You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
DBY And if also I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who has sent me. BSB BSB: But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone; I am with the Father who sent Me.
DBY And in your law too it is written that the testimony of two men is true: BSB BSB: Even in your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.
DBY I am one who bear witness concerning myself, and the Father who has sent me bears witness concerning me. BSB BSB: I am One who testifies about Myself, and the Father, who sent Me, also testifies about Me.”
DBY They said to him therefore, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me nor my Father. If ye had known me, ye would have known also my Father. BSB BSB: “Where is Your Father?” they asked Him. “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered. “If you knew Me, you would know My Father as well.”
DBY These words spoke he in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one took him, for his hour was not yet come. BSB BSB: He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts, near the treasury. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
DBY He said therefore again to them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin; where I go ye cannot come. BSB BSB: Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
DBY The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he says, Where I go ye cannot come? BSB BSB: So the Jews began to ask, “Will He kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
DBY And he said to them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above. Ye are of this world; I am not of this world. BSB BSB: Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
DBY I said therefore to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for unless ye shall believe that I am he , ye shall die in your sins. BSB BSB: That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
DBY They said therefore to him, Who art thou? And Jesus said to them, Altogether that which I also say to you. BSB BSB: “Who are You?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
DBY I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but he that has sent me is true, and I, what I have heard from him, these things I say to the world. BSB BSB: “I have much to say about you and much to judge. But the One who sent Me is truthful, and what I have heard from Him, I tell the world.”
DBY They knew not that he spoke to them of the Father. BSB BSB: They did not understand that He was telling them about the Father.
DBY Jesus therefore said to them, When ye shall have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am he , and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father has taught me I speak these things. BSB BSB: So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own, but speak exactly what the Father has taught Me.
DBY And he that has sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I do always the things that are pleasing to him. BSB BSB: He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.”
The Truth Will Set You Free (2 John 1:4–6)
DBY As he spoke these things many believed on him. BSB BSB: As Jesus spoke these things, many believed in Him.
DBY Jesus therefore said to the Jews who believed him, If ye abide in my word, ye are truly my disciples; BSB BSB: So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples.
DBY and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free. BSB BSB: Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
DBY They answered him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never been under bondage to any one; how sayest thou, Ye shall become free? BSB BSB: “We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered. “We have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say we will be set free?”
DBY Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Every one that practises sin is the bondman of sin. BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
DBY Now the bondman abides not in the house for ever: the son abides for ever. BSB BSB: A slave does not remain in the house forever, but a son remains forever.
DBY If therefore the Son shall set you free, ye shall be really free. BSB BSB: So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
DBY I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word has no entrance in you. BSB BSB: I know you are Abraham’s descendants, but you are trying to kill Me because My word has no place within you.
DBY I speak what I have seen with my Father, and ye then do what ye have seen with your father. BSB BSB: I speak of what I have seen in the presence of the Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
DBY They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus says to them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham; BSB BSB: “Abraham is our father,” they replied. “If you were children of Abraham,” said Jesus, “you would do the works of Abraham.
DBY but now ye seek to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God: this did not Abraham. BSB BSB: But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.
DBY Ye do the works of your father. They said therefore to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one father, God. BSB BSB: You are doing the works of your father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they declared. “Our only Father is God Himself.”
DBY Jesus said to them, If God were your father ye would have loved me, for I came forth from God and am come from him ; for neither am I come of myself, but he has sent me. BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on My own, but He sent Me.
DBY Why do ye not know my speech? Because ye cannot hear my word. BSB BSB: Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message.
DBY Ye are of the devil, as your father, and ye desire to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks falsehood, he speaks of what is his own; for he is a liar and its father: BSB BSB: You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 DBY and because I speak the truth, ye do not believe me. BSB BSB: But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!
DBY Which of you convinces me of sin? If I speak truth, why do ye not believe me? BSB BSB: Which of you can prove Me guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?
DBY He that is of God hears the words of God: therefore ye hear them not, because ye are not of God. BSB BSB: Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Before Abraham Was Born, I Am 48 DBY The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a demon? BSB BSB: The Jews answered Him, “Are we not right to say that You are a Samaritan and You have a demon?”
DBY Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me. BSB BSB: “I do not have a demon,” Jesus replied, “but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
DBY But I do not seek my own glory: there is he that seeks and judges. BSB BSB: I do not seek My own glory. There is One who seeks it, and He is the Judge.
DBY Verily, verily, I say unto you, If any one shall keep my word, he shall never see death. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.”
DBY The Jews therefore said to him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham has died, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste death. BSB BSB: “Now we know that You have a demon!” declared the Jews. “Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet You say that anyone who keeps Your word will never taste death.
DBY Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who has died? and the prophets have died: whom makest thou thyself? BSB BSB: Are You greater than our father Abraham? He died, as did the prophets. Who do You claim to be?”
DBY Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom ye say, He is our God. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. The One who glorifies Me is My Father, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’
DBY And ye know him not; but I know him; and if I said, I know him not, I should be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word. BSB BSB: You do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.
DBY The Jews therefore said to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham? BSB BSB: Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”
DBY Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. BSB BSB: “Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 DBY They took up therefore stones that they might cast them at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and thus passed on. BSB BSB: At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple area.
