Laws about Skin Diseases (Numbers 5:1–4)
DBY And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
DBY When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising or a scab, or bright spot, and it become in the skin of his flesh a sore as of leprosy, then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests. BSB BSB: “When someone has a swelling or rash or bright spot on his skin that may be an infectious skin disease, he must be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons who is a priest.
DBY And when the priest looketh on the sore in the skin of the flesh, and the hair in the sore is turned white, and the sore looketh deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is the sore of leprosy; and the priest shall look on him and pronounce him unclean. BSB BSB: The priest is to examine the infection on his skin, and if the hair in the infection has turned white and the sore appears to be deeper than the skin, it is a skin disease. After the priest examines him, he must pronounce him unclean.
DBY But if the bright spot be white in the skin of his flesh, and look not deeper than the skin, and the hair thereof be not turned white, the priest shall shut up him that hath the sore seven days. BSB BSB: If, however, the spot on his skin is white and does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest shall isolate the infected person for seven days.
DBY And the priest shall look on him the seventh day; and behold, in his sight, the sore remaineth as it was, the sore hath not spread in the skin, then the priest shall shut him up seven days a second time. BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest is to reexamine him, and if he sees that the infection is unchanged and has not spread on the skin, the priest must isolate him for another seven days.
DBY And the priest shall look on him again the seventh day, and behold, the sore is become pale and the sore hath not spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is a scab; and he shall wash his garments and be clean. BSB BSB: The priest will examine him again on the seventh day, and if the sore has faded and has not spread on the skin, the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is a rash. The person must wash his clothes and be clean.
DBY But if the scab have spread much in the skin, after that he hath been seen by the priest for his cleansing, he shall be seen by the priest again; BSB BSB: But if the rash spreads further on his skin after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he must present himself again to the priest.
DBY and the priest shall look on him, and behold, the scab hath spread in the skin; then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is leprosy. BSB BSB: The priest will reexamine him, and if the rash has spread on the skin, the priest must pronounce him unclean; it is a skin disease.
DBY When a sore as of leprosy is in a man, he shall be brought unto the priest; BSB BSB: When anyone develops a skin disease, he must be brought to the priest.
DBY and the priest shall look on him, and behold, there is a white rising in the skin, and it hath turned the hair white, and a trace of raw flesh is in the rising: BSB BSB: The priest will examine him, and if there is a white swelling on the skin that has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the swelling,
DBY it is an old leprosy in the skin of his flesh; and the priest shall pronounce him unclean, and he shall not shut him up, for he is unclean. BSB BSB: it is a chronic skin disease and the priest must pronounce him unclean. He need not isolate him, for he is unclean.
DBY But if the leprosy break out much in the skin, and the leprosy cover all the skin of him that hath the sore, from his head even to his foot, wherever the eyes of the priest look, BSB BSB: But if the skin disease breaks out all over his skin so that it covers all the skin of the infected person from head to foot, as far as the priest can see,
DBY and the priest looketh, and behold, the leprosy covereth all his flesh, he shall pronounce him clean that hath the sore; it is all turned white; he is clean. BSB BSB: the priest shall examine him, and if the disease has covered his entire body, he is to pronounce the infected person clean. Since it has all turned white, he is clean.
DBY And on the day when raw flesh appeareth in him, he shall be unclean. BSB BSB: But whenever raw flesh appears on someone, he will be unclean.
DBY And the priest shall look on the raw flesh, and shall pronounce him unclean: the raw flesh is unclean, it is leprosy. BSB BSB: When the priest sees the raw flesh, he must pronounce him unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; it is a skin disease.
DBY But if the raw flesh change again, and be turned white, he shall come unto the priest; BSB BSB: But if the raw flesh changes and turns white, he must go to the priest.
DBY and the priest shall look on him, and behold, the sore is turned white; then the priest shall pronounce him clean that hath the sore: he is clean. BSB BSB: The priest will reexamine him, and if the infection has turned white, the priest is to pronounce the infected person clean; then he is clean.
DBY And the flesh — when in the skin thereof cometh a boil, and it is healed, BSB BSB: When a boil appears on someone’s skin and it heals,
DBY and there is in the place of the boil a white rising, or a white-reddish bright spot, it shall be shewn to the priest; BSB BSB: and a white swelling or a reddish-white spot develops where the boil was, he must present himself to the priest.
DBY and the priest shall look on it, and behold, it looketh deeper than the skin, and the hair thereof is turned white; then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the sore of leprosy broken out in the boil. BSB BSB: The priest shall examine it, and if it appears to be beneath the skin and the hair in it has turned white, the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a diseased infection that has broken out in the boil.
DBY But if the priest look on it, and behold, there are no white hairs therein, and it is not deeper than the skin, and is pale, the priest shall shut him up seven days; BSB BSB: But when the priest examines it, if there is no white hair in it, and it is not beneath the skin and has faded, the priest shall isolate him for seven days.
DBY and if it spread much in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the sore. BSB BSB: If it spreads any further on the skin, the priest must pronounce him unclean; it is an infection.
DBY But if the bright spot have remained in its place, and have not spread, it is the scar of the boil; and the priest shall pronounce him clean. BSB BSB: But if the spot remains unchanged and does not spread, it is only the scar from the boil, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.
DBY Or if in the flesh, in the skin thereof, there is a burning inflammation, and the place of the inflammation become a bright spot white-reddish or white, BSB BSB: When there is a burn on someone’s skin and the raw area of the burn becomes reddish-white or white,
DBY and the priest look on it, and behold, the hair is turned white in the bright spot, and it looketh deeper than the skin, it is a leprosy which is broken out in the inflammation; and the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the sore of leprosy. BSB BSB: the priest must examine it. If the hair in the spot has turned white and the spot appears to be deeper than the skin, it is a disease that has broken out in the burn. The priest must pronounce him unclean; it is a diseased infection.
DBY But if the priest look on it, and behold, there is no white hair in the bright spot, and it is no deeper than the skin, and is pale, the priest shall shut him up seven days. BSB BSB: But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the spot, and it is not beneath the skin but has faded, the priest shall isolate him for seven days.
DBY And the priest shall look on him the seventh day, and if it have spread much in the skin, the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the sore of leprosy. BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest is to reexamine him, and if it has spread further on the skin, the priest must pronounce him unclean; it is a diseased infection.
DBY But if the bright spot have remained in its place, and not spread in the skin, and is pale, it is the rising of the inflammation; and the priest shall pronounce him clean; for it is the scar of the inflammation. BSB BSB: But if the spot is unchanged and has not spread on the skin but has faded, it is a swelling from the burn, and the priest is to pronounce him clean; for it is only the scar from the burn.
DBY And if a man or a woman have a sore on the head or on the beard, BSB BSB: If a man or woman has an infection on the head or chin,
DBY and the priest look on the sore, and behold, it looketh deeper than the skin, and there is in it yellow thin hair, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a scall, the leprosy of the head or the beard. BSB BSB: the priest shall examine the infection, and if it appears to be deeper than the skin and the hair in it is yellow and thin, the priest must pronounce him unclean; it is a scaly outbreak, an infectious disease of the head or chin.
DBY And if the priest look on the sore of the scall, and behold, it is not in sight deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, the priest shall shut up him that hath the sore of the scall seven days. BSB BSB: But if the priest examines the scaly infection and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, the priest shall isolate the infected person for seven days.
DBY And when the priest looketh on the sore on the seventh day, and behold, the scall hath not spread, and there is in it no yellow hair, and the scall doth not look deeper than the skin, BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest is to reexamine the infection, and if the scaly outbreak has not spread and there is no yellow hair in it, and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin,
DBY he that hath the sore shall shave himself; but the scall shall he not shave; and the priest shall shut up him that hath the scall seven days a second time. BSB BSB: then the person must shave himself except for the scaly area. Then the priest shall isolate him for another seven days.
DBY And the priest shall look on the scall on the seventh day, and behold, the scall hath not spread in the skin, nor is in sight deeper than the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean; and he shall wash his garments, and be clean. BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest shall examine the scaly outbreak, and if it has not spread on the skin and does not appear to be deeper than the skin, the priest is to pronounce him clean. He must wash his clothes, and he will be clean.
DBY But if the scall have spread much in the skin after his cleansing, BSB BSB: If, however, the scaly outbreak spreads further on the skin after his cleansing,
DBY and the priest shall look on him, and behold, the scall hath spread in the skin, the priest shall not seek for yellow hair: he is unclean. BSB BSB: the priest is to examine him, and if the scaly outbreak has spread on the skin, the priest need not look for yellow hair; the person is unclean.
DBY But if the scall have in his sight remained as it was, and there is black hair grown up therein, the scall is healed: he is clean; and the priest shall pronounce him clean. BSB BSB: If, however, in his sight the scaly outbreak is unchanged and black hair has grown in it, then it has healed. He is clean, and the priest is to pronounce him clean.
DBY And if a man or a woman have in the skin of their flesh bright spots, white bright spots, BSB BSB: When a man or a woman has white spots on the skin,
DBY and the priest look, and behold, there are in the skin of their flesh pale white spots, it is an eruption which is broken out in the skin: he is clean. BSB BSB: the priest shall examine them, and if the spots are dull white, it is a harmless rash that has broken out on the skin; the person is clean.
DBY And if a man's hair have fallen off his head, he is bald: he is clean; BSB BSB: Now if a man loses his hair and is bald, he is still clean.
DBY and if he have the hair fallen off from the part of the head towards his face, he is forehead-bald: he is clean. BSB BSB: Or if his hairline recedes and he is bald on his forehead, he is still clean.
DBY And if there be in the bald head, or bald forehead, a white-reddish sore, it is a leprosy which hath broken out in his bald head, or his bald forehead. BSB BSB: But if there is a reddish-white sore on the bald head or forehead, it is an infectious disease breaking out on it.
DBY And the priest shall look on it, and behold, the rising of the sore is white-reddish in his bald head, or in his bald forehead, like the appearance of the leprosy in the skin of the flesh; BSB BSB: The priest is to examine him, and if the swelling of the infection on his bald head or forehead is reddish-white like a skin disease,
DBY he is a leprous man, he is unclean; the priest shall pronounce him utterly unclean; his sore is in his head. BSB BSB: the man is diseased; he is unclean. The priest must pronounce him unclean because of the infection on his head.
DBY And as to the leper in whom the sore is, — his garments shall be rent, and his head shall be uncovered, and he shall put a covering on his beard, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean! BSB BSB: A diseased person must wear torn clothes and let his hair hang loose, and he must cover his mouth and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean!’
DBY All the days that the sore shall be in him he shall be unclean: he is unclean; he shall dwell apart; outside the camp shall his dwelling be. BSB BSB: As long as he has the infection, he remains unclean. He must live alone in a place outside the camp.
Laws about Mildew 47 DBY And if a sore of leprosy is in a garment, in a woollen garment, or a linen garment, BSB BSB: If any fabric is contaminated with mildew—any wool or linen garment,
DBY either in the warp or in the woof of linen or of wool, or in a skin, or in anything made of skin, BSB BSB: any weave or knit of linen or wool, or any article of leather—
DBY and the sore is greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the skin, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin, it is the sore of leprosy, and shall be shewn unto the priest. BSB BSB: and if the mark in the fabric, leather, weave, knit, or leather article is green or red, then it is contaminated with mildew and must be shown to the priest.
DBY And the priest shall look on the sore, and shall shut up that which hath the sore seven days. BSB BSB: And the priest is to examine the mildew and isolate the contaminated fabric for seven days.
DBY And he shall see the sore on the seventh day: if the sore have spread in the garment, either in the warp or in the woof, or in a skin, in any work that may be made of skin, the sore is a corroding leprosy: it is unclean. BSB BSB: On the seventh day the priest shall reexamine it, and if the mildew has spread in the fabric, weave, knit, or leather, then regardless of how it is used, it is a harmful mildew; the article is unclean.
DBY And they shall burn the garment, or the warp or the woof, of wool or of linen, or anything of skin, wherein the sore is; for it is a corroding leprosy: it shall be burned with fire. BSB BSB: He is to burn the fabric, weave, or knit, whether the contaminated item is wool or linen or leather. Since the mildew is harmful, the article must be burned up.
DBY But if the priest look, and behold, the sore hath not spread in the garment, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin, BSB BSB: But when the priest reexamines it, if the mildew has not spread in the fabric, weave, knit, or leather article,
DBY then the priest shall command that they wash the thing wherein the sore is, and he shall shut it up seven days a second time. BSB BSB: the priest is to order the contaminated article to be washed and isolated for another seven days.
DBY And the priest shall look on the sore after the washing, and behold, if the sore have not changed its appearance, and the sore have not spread, it is unclean: thou shalt burn it with fire: it is a fretting sore on what is threadbare or where the nap is gone. BSB BSB: After it has been washed, the priest is to reexamine it, and if the mildewed article has not changed in appearance, it is unclean. Even though the mildew has not spread, you must burn it, whether the rot is on the front or back.
DBY But if the priest look, and behold, the sore hath become pale after the washing of it, then he shall rend it from the garment, or from the skin, or from the warp, or from the woof. BSB BSB: If the priest examines it and the mildew has faded after it has been washed, he must cut the contaminated section out of the fabric, leather, weave, or knit.
DBY And if it appear still in the garment, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin, it is a leprosy breaking out: thou shalt burn with fire that wherein the sore is. BSB BSB: But if it reappears in the fabric, weave, or knit, or on any leather article, it is spreading. You must burn the contaminated article.
DBY But the garment, or the warp, or the woof, or whatever thing of skin which thou hast washed, and the sore departeth from them, it shall be washed a second time, and it is clean. BSB BSB: If the mildew disappears from the fabric, weave, or knit, or any leather article after washing, then it is to be washed again, and it will be clean.
DBY This is the law of the sore of leprosy in a garment of wool or linen, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin, to cleanse it, or to pronounce it unclean. BSB BSB: This is the law concerning a mildew contamination in wool or linen fabric, weave, or knit, or any leather article, for pronouncing it clean or unclean.”
