The Parable of the Wicked Tenants (Matthew 21:33–46; Luke 20:9–18)
DBY And he began to say to them in parables, A man planted a vineyard, and made a fence round it and dug a wine-vat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country. BSB BSB: Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a wine vat, and built a watchtower. Then he rented it out to some tenants and went away on a journey.
DBY And he sent a bondman to the husbandmen at the season, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard. BSB BSB: At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard.
DBY But they took him, and beat him , and sent him away empty. BSB BSB: But they seized the servant, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.
DBY And again he sent to them another bondman; and at him they threw stones, and struck him on the head, and sent him away with insult. BSB BSB: Then he sent them another servant, and they struck him over the head and treated him shamefully.
DBY And again he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some and killing some. BSB BSB: He sent still another, and this one they killed. He sent many others; some they beat and others they killed.
DBY Having yet therefore one beloved son, he sent also him to them the last, saying, They will have respect for my son. BSB BSB: Finally, having one beloved son, he sent him to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.
DBY But those husbandmen said to one another, This is the heir: come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours. BSB BSB: But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
DBY And they took him and killed him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard. BSB BSB: So they seized the son, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
DBY What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. BSB BSB: What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.
DBY Have ye not even read this scripture, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone: BSB BSB: Have you never read this Scripture: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
DBY this is of the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes? BSB BSB: This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
DBY And they sought to lay hold of him, and they feared the crowd; for they knew that he had spoken the parable of them. And they left him and went away. BSB BSB: At this, the leaders sought to arrest Jesus, for they knew that He had spoken this parable against them. But fearing the crowd, they left Him and went away.
Paying Taxes to Caesar (Matthew 22:15–22; Luke 20:19–26)
DBY And they send to him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they might catch him in speaking. BSB BSB: Later, they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to catch Jesus in His words.
DBY And they come and say to him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest not for any one; for thou regardest not men's person, but teachest the way of God with truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not? BSB BSB: “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and seek favor from no one. Indeed, You are impartial and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them or not?”
DBY Should we give, or should we not give? But he knowing their hypocrisy said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Bring me a denarius that I may see it . BSB BSB: But Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to inspect.”
DBY And they brought it . And he says to them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said to him, Caesar's. BSB BSB: So they brought it, and He asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they answered.
DBY And Jesus answering said to them, Pay what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God. And they wondered at him. BSB BSB: Then Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” And they marveled at Him.
The Sadducees and the Resurrection (Matthew 22:23–33; Luke 20:27–40)
DBY And Sadducees come to him, that say there is no resurrection; and they demanded of him saying, BSB BSB: Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and questioned Him:
DBY Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if any one's brother die, and leave a wife behind, and leave no children, that his brother shall take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother. BSB BSB: “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man is to marry his brother’s widow and raise up offspring for him.
DBY There were seven brethren; and the first took a wife, and dying did not leave seed; BSB BSB: Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died, leaving no children.
DBY and the second took her and died, and neither did he leave seed; and the third likewise. BSB BSB: Then the second one married the widow, but he also died and left no children. And the third did likewise.
DBY And the seven took her and did not leave seed. Last of all the woman also died. BSB BSB: In this way, none of the seven left any children. And last of all, the woman died.
DBY In the resurrection, when they shall rise again, of which of them shall she be wife, for the seven had her as wife? BSB BSB: In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be? For all seven were married to her.”
DBY And Jesus answering said to them, Do not ye therefore err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God? BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “Aren’t you mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
DBY For when they rise from among the dead they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels who are in the heavens. BSB BSB: When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.
DBY But concerning the dead that they rise, have ye not read in the book of Moses, in the section of the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? BSB BSB: But concerning the dead rising, have you not read about the burning bush in the Book of Moses, how God told him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 DBY He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. Ye therefore greatly err. BSB BSB: He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”
The Greatest Commandment (Deuteronomy 6:1–19; Matthew 22:34–40)
DBY and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. BSB BSB: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
DBY And a second like it is this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is not another commandment greater than these. BSB BSB: The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
DBY And the scribe said to him, Right, teacher; thou hast spoken according to the truth. For he is one, and there is none other besides him; BSB BSB: “Right, Teacher,” the scribe replied. “You have stated correctly that God is One and there is no other but Him,
DBY and to love him with all the heart, and with all the intelligence, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbour as one's self, is more than all the burnt-offerings and sacrifices. BSB BSB: and to love Him with all your heart and with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself. This is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
DBY And Jesus, seeing that he had answered intelligently, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no one dared question him any more. BSB BSB: When Jesus saw that the man had answered wisely, He said, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to question Him any further.
Whose Son Is the Christ? (Matthew 22:41–46; Luke 20:41–44)
DBY And Jesus answering said as he was teaching in the temple, How do the scribes say that the Christ is son of David? BSB BSB: While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, He asked, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?
DBY for David himself said speaking in the Holy Spirit, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand until I put thine enemies as footstool of thy feet.BSB BSB: Speaking by the Holy Spirit, David himself declared: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’
DBY David himself therefore calls him Lord, and whence is he his son? And the mass of the people heard him gladly. BSB BSB: David himself calls Him ‘Lord.’ So how can He be David’s son?” And the large crowd listened to Him with delight.
Beware of the Scribes (Luke 20:45–47)
DBY And he said to them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and salutations in the marketplaces, BSB BSB: In His teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out for the scribes. They like to walk around in long robes, to receive greetings in the marketplaces,
DBY and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers; BSB BSB: and to have the chief seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
DBY who devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. These shall receive a severer judgment. BSB BSB: They defraud widows of their houses, and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will receive greater condemnation.”
The Widow’s Offering (Luke 21:1–4)
DBY And Jesus, having sat down opposite the treasury, saw how the crowd was casting money into the treasury; and many rich cast in much. BSB BSB: As Jesus was sitting opposite the treasury, He watched the crowd putting money into it. And many rich people put in large amounts.
DBY And a poor widow came and cast in two mites, which is a farthing. BSB BSB: Then one poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amounted to a small fraction of a denarius.
DBY And having called his disciples to him he said to them, Verily I say unto you, This poor widow has cast in more than all who have cast into the treasury: BSB BSB: Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more than all the others into the treasury.
DBY for all have cast in of that which they had in abundance, but she of her destitution has cast in all that she had, the whole of her living. BSB BSB: For they all contributed out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”
