The Demons and the Pigs (Matthew 8:28–34; Luke 8:26–39)
DBY And they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. BSB BSB: On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes.
DBY And immediately on his going out of the ship there met him out of the tombs a man possessed by an unclean spirit, BSB BSB: As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs.
DBY who had his dwelling in the tombs; and no one was able to bind him, not even with chains; BSB BSB: This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains.
DBY because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn asunder by him, and the fetters were shattered; and no one was able to subdue him. BSB BSB: Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him.
DBY And continually night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying and cutting himself with stones. BSB BSB: Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.
DBY But seeing Jesus from afar off, he ran and did him homage, BSB BSB: When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him.
DBY and crying with a loud voice he says, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure thee by God, torment me not. BSB BSB: And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!”
DBY For he said to him, Come forth, unclean spirit, out of the man. BSB BSB: For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!”
DBY And he asked him, What is thy name? And he says to him, Legion is my name, because we are many. BSB BSB: “What is your name?” Jesus asked. “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
DBY And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. BSB BSB: And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region.
DBY Now there was there just at the mountain a great herd of swine feeding; BSB BSB: There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.
DBY and they besought him, saying, Send us into the swine that we may enter into them. BSB BSB: So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.”
DBY And Jesus immediately allowed them. And the unclean spirits going out entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep slope, into the sea (about two thousand), and were choked in the sea. BSB BSB: He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water.
DBY And those that were feeding them fled and reported it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had taken place. BSB BSB: Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
DBY And they come to Jesus, and they see the possessed of demons sitting and clothed and sensible, him that had had the legion: and they were afraid. BSB BSB: When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
DBY And they that had seen it related to them how it had happened to the man possessed by demons, and concerning the swine. BSB BSB: Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs.
DBY And they began to beg him to depart from their coasts. BSB BSB: And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region.
DBY And as he went on board ship, the man that had been possessed by demons besought him that he might be with him. BSB BSB: As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him.
DBY And he suffered him not, but says to him, Go to thine home to thine own people, and tell them how great things the Lord has done for thee, and has had mercy on thee. BSB BSB: But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own people,” He said, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you.”
DBY And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him; and all wondered. BSB BSB: So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.
The Healing Touch of Jesus (Matthew 9:18–26; Luke 8:40–56)
DBY And Jesus having passed over in the ship again to the other side, a great crowd gathered to him; and he was by the sea. BSB BSB: When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea.

DBY and he besought him much, saying, My little daughter is at extremity; I pray that thou shouldest come and lay thy hands upon her so that she may be healed, and may live. BSB BSB: and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.”
DBY And he went with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed on him. BSB BSB: So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.
DBY And a certain woman who had had a flux of blood twelve years, BSB BSB: And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.
DBY and had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent everything she had and had found no advantage from it, but had rather got worse, BSB BSB: She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse.
DBY for she said, If I shall touch but his clothes I shall be healed. BSB BSB: For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.”
DBY And immediately her fountain of blood was dried up, and she knew in her body that she was cured from the scourge. BSB BSB: Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
DBY And immediately Jesus, knowing in himself the power that had gone out of him, turning round in the crowd said, Who has touched my clothes? BSB BSB: At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?”
DBY And his disciples said to him, Thou seest the crowd pressing on thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? BSB BSB: His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’”
DBY And he looked round about to see her who had done this. BSB BSB: But He kept looking around to see who had done this.
DBY But the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had taken place in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. BSB BSB: Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth.
DBY And he said to her, Daughter, thy faith has healed thee; go in peace, and be well of thy scourge. BSB BSB: “Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”
DBY While he was yet speaking, they come from the ruler of the synagogue's house , saying, Thy daughter has died, why troublest thou the teacher any further? BSB BSB: While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?”
DBY But Jesus immediately , having heard the word spoken, says to the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not; only believe. BSB BSB: But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”
DBY And he suffered no one to accompany him save Peter and James, and John the brother of James. BSB BSB: And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
DBY And he comes to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and sees the tumult, and people weeping and wailing greatly. BSB BSB: When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly.
DBY And entering in he says to them, Why do ye make a tumult and weep? the child has not died, but sleeps. BSB BSB: He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.”
DBY And they derided him. But he, having put them all out, takes with him the father of the child, and the mother, and those that were with him, and enters in where the child was lying. BSB BSB: And they laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child.
DBY And having laid hold of the hand of the child, he says to her, Talitha koumi, which is, interpreted, Damsel, I say to thee, Arise. BSB BSB: Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” 42 DBY And immediately the damsel arose and walked, for she was twelve years old. And they were astonished with great astonishment. BSB BSB: Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). And at once they were utterly astounded.
DBY And he charged them much that no one should know this; and he desired that something should be given her to eat. BSB BSB: Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.
