The Tradition of the Elders (Mark 7:1–13)
DBY Then the scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem come up to Jesus, saying, BSB BSB: Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,
DBY Why do thy disciples transgress what has been delivered by the ancients? for they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. BSB BSB: “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands before they eat.”
DBY But he answering said to them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God on account of your traditional teaching? BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?
DBY For God commanded saying, Honour father and mother; and, He that speaks ill of father or mother, let him die the death. BSB BSB: For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’
DBY But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or mother, It is a gift, whatsoever it be by which received from me thou wouldest be profited: BSB BSB: But you say that if anyone says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’
DBY and he shall in no wise honour his father or his mother; and ye have made void the commandment of God on account of your traditional teaching. BSB BSB: he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
DBY Hypocrites! well has Esaias prophesied about you, saying, BSB BSB: You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you:
DBY This people honour me with the lips, but their heart is far away from me; BSB BSB: ‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.
DBY but in vain do they worship me, teaching as teachings commandments of men. BSB BSB: They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.’”
What Defiles a Man (Mark 7:14–23)
DBY And having called to him the crowd, he said to them, Hear and understand: BSB BSB: Jesus called the crowd to Him and said, “Listen and understand.
DBY Not what enters into the mouth defiles the man; but what goes forth out of the mouth, this defiles the man. BSB BSB: A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth, but by what comes out of it.”
DBY Then his disciples, coming up, said to him, Dost thou know that the Pharisees, having heard this word, have been offended? BSB BSB: Then the disciples came to Him and said, “Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
DBY But he answering said, Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted shall be rooted up. BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “Every plant that My heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by its roots.
DBY Leave them alone; they are blind leaders of blind: but if blind lead blind, both will fall into a ditch. BSB BSB: Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”
DBY And Peter answering said to him, Expound to us this parable. BSB BSB: Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”
DBY But he said, Are ye also still without intelligence? BSB BSB: “Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked.
DBY Do ye not yet apprehend, that everything that enters into the mouth finds its way into the belly, and is cast forth into the draught? BSB BSB: “Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated?
DBY but the things which go forth out of the mouth come out of the heart, and those defile man. BSB BSB: But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man.
DBY For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witnessings, blasphemies; BSB BSB: For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander.
DBY these are the things which defile man; but the eating with unwashen hands does not defile man. BSB BSB: These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile him.”
The Faith of the Canaanite Woman (Mark 7:24–30)
DBY and lo, a Canaanitish woman, coming out from those borders, cried to him saying, Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is miserably possessed by a demon. BSB BSB: And a Canaanite woman from that region came to Him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is miserably possessed by a demon.”
DBY But she came and did him homage, saying, Lord, help me. BSB BSB: The woman came and knelt before Him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
DBY But he answering said, It is not well to take the bread of the children and cast it to the dogs. BSB BSB: But Jesus replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
DBY But she said, Yea, Lord; for even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from the table of their masters. BSB BSB: “Yes, Lord,” she said, “even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
The Feeding of the Four Thousand (2 Kings 4:42–44; Mark 8:1–10)
DBY And Jesus, going away from thence, came towards the sea of Galilee, and he went up into the mountain and sat down there; BSB BSB: Moving on from there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on a mountain and sat down.
DBY and great crowds came to him, having with them lame, blind, dumb, crippled, and many others, and they cast them at his feet, and he healed them: BSB BSB: Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and laid them at His feet, and He healed them.
DBY so that the crowds wondered, seeing dumb speaking, crippled sound, lame walking, and blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel. BSB BSB: The crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.
DBY But Jesus, having called his disciples to him , said, I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me already three days and they have not anything they can eat, and I would not send them away fasting lest they should faint on the way. BSB BSB: Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may faint along the way.”
DBY And his disciples say to him, Whence should we have so many loaves in the wilderness as to satisfy so great a crowd? BSB BSB: The disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could we find enough bread to feed such a large crowd?”
DBY And Jesus says to them, How many loaves have ye? But they said, Seven, and a few small fishes. BSB BSB: “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
DBY And he commanded the crowds to lie down on the ground; BSB BSB: And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground.
DBY and having taken the seven loaves and the fishes, having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples, and the disciples to the crowd. BSB BSB: Taking the seven loaves and the fish, He gave thanks and broke them. Then He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
DBY And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was over and above of the fragments seven baskets full; BSB BSB: They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
DBY but they that ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. BSB BSB: A total of four thousand men were fed, besides women and children.
DBY And, having dismissed the crowds, he went on board ship and came to the borders of Magadan. BSB BSB: After Jesus had dismissed the crowds, He got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
