Matthew 2 Matthew 2
Birth and preparation of the King
The Pilgrimage of the Magi (Micah 5:1–6)
2 DBY Where is the king of the Jews that has been born? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to do him homage. BSB BSB: asking, “Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”
3 DBY But Herod the king having heard of it , was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; BSB BSB: When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 DBY and, assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born. BSB BSB: And when he had assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.
5 DBY And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for thus it is written through the prophet: BSB BSB: “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 DBY And thou Bethlehem, land of Juda, art in no wise the least among the governors of Juda; for out of thee shall go forth a leader who shall shepherd my people Israel. BSB BSB: ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of My people Israel.’”
7 DBY Then Herod, having secretly called the magi, inquired of them accurately the time of the star that was appearing; BSB BSB: Then Herod called the Magi secretly and learned from them the exact time the star had appeared.
8 DBY and having sent them to Bethlehem, said, Go, search out accurately concerning the child, and when ye shall have found him bring me back word, so that I also may come and do him homage. BSB BSB: And sending them to Bethlehem, he said: “Go and search carefully for the Child, and when you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.”
9 DBY And they having heard the king went their way; and lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it came and stood over the place where the little child was. BSB BSB: After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stood over the place where the Child was.
10 DBY And when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. BSB BSB: When they saw the star, they rejoiced with great delight.
11 DBY And having come into the house they saw the little child with Mary his mother, and falling down did him homage. And having opened their treasures, they offered to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. BSB BSB: On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.
12 DBY And being divinely instructed in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. BSB BSB: And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew to their country by another route.
The Flight to Egypt (Hosea 11:1–7)
13 DBY Now, they having departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appears in a dream to Joseph, saying, Arise, take to thee the little child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I shall tell thee; for Herod will seek the little child to destroy it. BSB BSB: When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up!” he said. “Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.”
14 DBY And, having arisen, he took to him the little child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt. BSB BSB: So he got up, took the Child and His mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt,
Weeping and Great Mourning (Jeremiah 31:1–25)
16 DBY Then Herod, seeing that he had been mocked by the magi, was greatly enraged; and sent and slew all the boys which were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time which he had accurately inquired from the magi. BSB BSB: When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was filled with rage. Sending orders, he put to death all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the Magi.
17 DBY Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying, BSB BSB: Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 DBY A voice has been heard in Rama, weeping, and great lamentation: Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. BSB BSB: “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
The Return to Nazareth (Luke 2:39–40)
20 DBY Arise, take to thee the little child and its mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they who sought the life of the little child are dead. BSB BSB: “Get up!” he said. “Take the Child and His mother and go to the land of Israel, for those seeking the Child’s life are now dead.”
21 DBY And he arose and took to him the little child and its mother, and came into the land of Israel; BSB BSB: So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and went to the land of Israel.
22 DBY but having heard that 'Archelaus reigns over Judaea, instead of Herod his father,' he was afraid to go there; and having been divinely instructed in a dream, he went away into the parts of Galilee, BSB BSB: But when he learned that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee,
23 DBY and came and dwelt in a town called Nazareth; so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, He shall be called a Nazaraene. BSB BSB: and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophets: “He will be called a Nazarene.”
