The Parable of the Banquet (Luke 14:15–24)
DBY And Jesus answering spoke to them again in parables, saying, BSB BSB: Once again, Jesus spoke to them in parables:
DBY The kingdom of the heavens has become like a king who made a wedding feast for his son, BSB BSB: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.
DBY and sent his bondmen to call the persons invited to the wedding feast, and they would not come. BSB BSB: He sent his servants to call those he had invited to the banquet, but they refused to come.
DBY Again he sent other bondmen, saying, Say to the persons invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fatted beasts are killed, and all things ready; come to the wedding feast. BSB BSB: Again, he sent other servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’
DBY But they made light of it, and went, one to his own land, and another to his commerce. BSB BSB: But they paid no attention and went away, one to his field, another to his business.
DBY And the rest, laying hold of his bondmen, ill-treated and slew them . BSB BSB: The rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.
DBY And when the king heard of it he was wroth, and having sent his forces, destroyed those murderers and burned their city. BSB BSB: The king was enraged, and he sent his troops to destroy those murderers and burn their city.
DBY Then he says to his bondmen, The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy; BSB BSB: Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited were not worthy.
DBY go therefore into the thoroughfares of the highways, and as many as ye shall find invite to the wedding feast. BSB BSB: Go therefore to the crossroads and invite to the banquet as many as you can find.’
DBY And those bondmen went out into the highways, and brought together all as many as they found, both evil and good; and the wedding feast was furnished with guests. BSB BSB: So the servants went out into the streets and gathered everyone they could find, both evil and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
DBY And the king, having gone in to see the guests, beheld there a man not clothed with a wedding garment. BSB BSB: But when the king came in to see the guests, he spotted a man who was not dressed in wedding clothes.
DBY And he says to him, My friend, how camest thou in here not having on a wedding garment? But he was speechless. BSB BSB: ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But the man was speechless.
DBY Then said the king to the servants, Bind him feet and hands, and take him away, and cast him out into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. BSB BSB: Then the king told the servants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
DBY For many are called ones, but few chosen ones. BSB BSB: For many are called, but few are chosen.”
Paying Taxes to Caesar (Mark 12:13–17; Luke 20:19–26)
DBY Then went the Pharisees and held a council how they might ensnare him in speaking. BSB BSB: Then the Pharisees went out and conspired to trap Jesus in His words.
DBY And they send out to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one, for thou regardest not men's person; BSB BSB: They sent their disciples to Him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and that You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You seek favor from no one, because You pay no attention to external appearance.
DBY tell us therefore what thou thinkest: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? BSB BSB: So tell us what You think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
DBY But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, Why tempt ye me, hypocrites? BSB BSB: But Jesus knew their evil intent and said, “You hypocrites, why are you testing Me?
DBY Shew me the money of the tribute. And they presented to him a denarius. BSB BSB: Show Me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought Him a denarius.
DBY And he says to them, Whose is this image and superscription? BSB BSB: “Whose image is this,” He asked, “and whose inscription?”
DBY They say to him, Caesar's. Then he says to them, Pay then what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God. BSB BSB: “Caesar’s,” they answered. So Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
DBY And when they heard him , they wondered, and left him, and went away. BSB BSB: And when they heard this, they were amazed. So they left Him and went away.
The Sadducees and the Resurrection (Mark 12:18–27; Luke 20:27–40)
DBY saying, Teacher, Moses said, If any one die, not having children, his brother shall marry his wife and shall raise up seed to his brother. BSB BSB: “Teacher,” they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies without having children, his brother is to marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.
DBY Now there were with us seven brethren; and the first having married died, and not having seed, left his wife to his brother. BSB BSB: Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died without having children. So he left his wife to his brother.
DBY In like manner also the second and the third, unto the seven. BSB BSB: The same thing happened to the second and third brothers, down to the seventh.
DBY And last of all the woman also died. BSB BSB: And last of all, the woman died.
DBY In the resurrection therefore of which of the seven shall she be wife, for all had her? BSB BSB: In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? For all of them were married to her.”
DBY And Jesus answering said to them, Ye err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God. BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
DBY For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as angels of God in heaven. BSB BSB: In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.
DBY But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, BSB BSB: But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what God said to you:
DBY And when the crowds heard it they were astonished at his doctrine. BSB BSB: When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
The Greatest Commandment (Deuteronomy 6:1–19; Mark 12:28–34)
DBY But the Pharisees, having heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, were gathered together. BSB BSB: And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves gathered together.
DBY And one of them, a lawyer, demanded, tempting him, and saying, BSB BSB: One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question:
DBY Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? BSB BSB: “Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?”
DBY And he said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy understanding. BSB BSB: Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
DBY This is the great and first commandment. BSB BSB: This is the first and greatest commandment.
DBY And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. BSB BSB: And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
DBY On these two commandments the whole law and the prophets hang. BSB BSB: All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Whose Son Is the Christ? (Mark 12:35–37; Luke 20:41–44)
DBY And the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus demanded of them, BSB BSB: While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus questioned them:
DBY saying, What think ye concerning the Christ? whose son is he? They say to him, David's. BSB BSB: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?” “David’s,” they answered.
DBY He says to them, How then does David in Spirit call him Lord, saying, BSB BSB: Jesus said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord’? For he says:
DBY The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand until I put thine enemies under thy feet? BSB BSB: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’
DBY If therefore David call him Lord, how is he his son? BSB BSB: So if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how can He be David’s son?”
DBY And no one was able to answer him a word, nor did any one dare from that day to question him any more. BSB BSB: No one was able to answer a word, and from that day on no one dared to question Him any further.
