Judging Others (Luke 6:37–42; Romans 14:1–12)
DBY for with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you. BSB BSB: For with the same judgment you pronounce, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
DBY But why lookest thou on the mote that is in the eye of thy brother, but observest not the beam that is in thine eye? BSB BSB: Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?
DBY Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Allow me , I will cast out the mote from thine eye; and behold, the beam is in thine eye? BSB BSB: How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while there is still a beam in your own eye?
DBY Hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine eye, and then thou wilt see clearly to cast out the mote out of the eye of thy brother. BSB BSB: You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
DBY Give not that which is holy to the dogs, nor cast your pearls before the swine, lest they trample them with their feet, and turning round rend you. BSB BSB: Do not give dogs what is holy; do not throw your pearls before swine. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.
Ask, Seek, Knock (Luke 11:5–13)
DBY Ask, and it shall be given to you. Seek, and ye shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened to you. BSB BSB: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.
DBY For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened. BSB BSB: For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
DBY Or what man is there of you who, if his son shall ask of him a loaf of bread, will give him a stone; BSB BSB: Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
DBY and if he ask a fish, will give him a serpent? BSB BSB: Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
DBY If therefore ye, being wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much rather shall your Father who is in the heavens give good things to them that ask of him? BSB BSB: So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
DBY Therefore all things whatever ye desire that men should do to you, thus do ye also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets. BSB BSB: In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the Prophets.
The Narrow Gate (Luke 13:22–30)
DBY Enter in through the narrow gate, for wide the gate and broad the way that leads to destruction, and many are they who enter in through it. BSB BSB: Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
DBY For narrow the gate and straitened the way that leads to life, and they are few who find it. BSB BSB: But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.
A Tree and Its Fruit (Luke 6:43–45)
DBY But beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but within are ravening wolves. BSB BSB: Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
DBY So every good tree produces good fruits, but the worthless tree produces bad fruits. BSB BSB: Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
DBY A good tree cannot produce bad fruits, nor a worthless tree produce good fruits. BSB BSB: A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
DBY Every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. BSB BSB: Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
DBY By their fruits then surely ye shall know them. BSB BSB: So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.
DBY Many shall say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied through thy name, and through thy name cast out demons, and through thy name done many works of power? BSB BSB: Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’
DBY and then will I avow unto them, I never knew you. Depart from me, workers of lawlessness. BSB BSB: Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’
The House on the Rock (Luke 6:46–49)
DBY Whoever therefore hears these my words and does them, I will liken him to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock; BSB BSB: Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
DBY and the rain came down, and the streams came, and the winds blew and fell upon that house, and it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock. BSB BSB: The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock.
DBY And every one who hears these my words and does not do them, he shall be likened to a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand; BSB BSB: But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
DBY and the rain came down, and the streams came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, and it fell, and its fall was great. BSB BSB: The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its collapse!”
The Authority of Jesus 28 DBY And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were astonished at his doctrine, BSB BSB: When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at His teaching,
DBY for he taught them as having authority, and not as their scribes. BSB BSB: because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
