The Defeat of Arad 1 DBY And the Canaanite king of Arad, who dwelt in the south, heard that Israel came by the way of Atharim, and he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners. BSB BSB: When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked Israel and captured some prisoners.
DBY Then Israel vowed a vow to Jehovah, and said, If thou give this people wholly into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities. BSB BSB: So Israel made a vow to the LORD: “If You will deliver this people into our hands, we will devote their cities to destruction.”
DBY And Jehovah listened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them, and their cities. And they called the name of the place Hormah. BSB BSB: And the LORD heard Israel’s plea and delivered up the Canaanites. Israel devoted them and their cities to destruction; so they named the place Hormah.
The Bronze Serpent 4 DBY And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to go round the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became impatient on the way; BSB BSB: Then they set out from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, in order to bypass the land of Edom. But the people grew impatient on the journey
DBY and the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Why have ye brought us up out of Egypt that we should die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and no water, and our soul loathes this light bread. BSB BSB: and spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you led us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread or water, and we detest this wretched food!”
DBY Then Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, which bit the people; and much people of Israel died. BSB BSB: So the LORD sent venomous snakes among the people, and many of the Israelites were bitten and died.
DBY And the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned, in that we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee: pray to Jehovah that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. BSB BSB: Then the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you. Intercede with the LORD so He will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses interceded for the people.
DBY And Jehovah said to Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent , and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, and looketh upon it, shall live. BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and mount it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, he will live.”
DBY And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole; and it came to pass, if a serpent had bitten any man, and he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. BSB BSB: So Moses made a bronze snake and mounted it on a pole. If anyone who was bitten looked at the bronze snake, he would live.
The Journey to Moab 10 DBY And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in Oboth. BSB BSB: Then the Israelites set out and camped at Oboth.
DBY And they removed from Oboth, and encamped at Ijim-Abarim, in the wilderness that is before Moab, toward the sun-rising. BSB BSB: They journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim in the wilderness opposite Moab to the east.
DBY From thence they removed, and encamped at the torrent Zered. BSB BSB: From there they set out and camped in the Valley of Zered.
DBY From thence they removed, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. BSB BSB: From there they moved on and camped on the other side of the Arnon, in the wilderness that extends into the Amorite territory. Now the Arnon is the border between the Moabites and the Amorites.
DBY Therefore it is said in the book of the wars of Jehovah, Vaheb in Suphah, and the brooks of Arnon; BSB BSB: Therefore it is stated in the Book of the Wars of the LORD: “Waheb in Suphah and the wadis of the Arnon,
DBY And the stream of the brooks which turneth to the dwelling of Ar, And inclineth toward the border of Moab. BSB BSB: even the slopes of the wadis that extend to the site of Ar and lie along the border of Moab.”
DBY And from thence to Beer: that is the well of which Jehovah spoke to Moses, Assemble the people, and I will give them water. BSB BSB: From there they went on to Beer, the well where the LORD said to Moses, “Gather the people so that I may give them water.”
DBY Then Israel sang this song, Rise up, well! sing unto it: BSB BSB: Then Israel sang this song: “Spring up, O well, all of you sing to it!
DBY Well which princes digged, which the nobles of the people hollowed out at the word of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah; BSB BSB: The princes dug the well; the nobles of the people hollowed it out with their scepters and with their staffs.” From the wilderness the Israelites went on to Mattanah,
DBY and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth; BSB BSB: and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
DBY and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the fields of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks over the surface of the waste. BSB BSB: and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of Pisgah overlooks the wasteland.
The Defeat of Sihon (Deuteronomy 2:24–37)
DBY And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, BSB BSB: Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,
DBY Let us pass through thy land; we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink water out of the wells; on the king's road will we go until we have passed thy border. BSB BSB: “Let us pass through your land. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will stay on the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.”
DBY But Sihon would not suffer Israel to go through his border; and Sihon gathered all his people, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel. BSB BSB: But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. Instead, he gathered his whole army and went out to confront Israel in the wilderness. When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel.
DBY And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong. BSB BSB: And Israel put him to the sword and took possession of his land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok—but only up to the border of the Ammonites, because it was fortified.
DBY And Israel took all these cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, at Heshbon, and in all its dependent villages. BSB BSB: Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites and occupied them, including Heshbon and all its villages.
DBY For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites; and he had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon. BSB BSB: Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land as far as the Arnon.
DBY Therefore the poets say, Come to Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and established. BSB BSB: That is why the poets say: “Come to Heshbon, let it be rebuilt; let the city of Sihon be restored.
DBY For there went forth fire from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; It consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of the Arnon. BSB BSB: For a fire went out from Heshbon, a blaze from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the rulers of Arnon’s heights.
DBY Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, people of Chemosh: He gave his sons that had escaped, and his daughters into captivity to Sihon the king of the Amorites. BSB BSB: Woe to you, O Moab! You are destroyed, O people of Chemosh! He gave up his sons as refugees, and his daughters into captivity to Sihon king of the Amorites.
DBY And we have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon; and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba. BSB BSB: But we have overthrown them; Heshbon is destroyed as far as Dibon. We demolished them as far as Nophah, which reaches to Medeba.”
The Defeat of Og (Deuteronomy 3:1–11)
DBY And Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. BSB BSB: So Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.
DBY And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took its dependent villages, and he dispossessed the Amorites that were there. BSB BSB: After Moses had sent spies to Jazer, Israel captured its villages and drove out the Amorites who were there.
DBY And they turned and went up by the way to Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, for battle to Edrei. BSB BSB: Then they turned and went up the road to Bashan, and Og king of Bashan and his whole army came out to meet them in battle at Edrei.
DBY And Jehovah said to Moses, Fear him not! for into thy hand have I given him, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon. BSB BSB: But the LORD said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, along with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.”
DBY And they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, so that they left him none remaining, and took possession of his land. BSB BSB: So they struck down Og, along with his sons and his whole army, until no remnant was left. And they took possession of his land.
