Laws about Vows (Matthew 5:33–37)
DBY And Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the children of Israel, saying, This is what Jehovah hath commanded. BSB BSB: Then Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel, “This is what the LORD has commanded:
DBY If a man vow a vow to Jehovah, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word; according to all that hath gone out of his mouth shall he do. BSB BSB: If a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word; he must do everything he has promised.
DBY If a woman also vow a vow to Jehovah, and bind herself by a bond, in her father's house in her youth, BSB BSB: And if a woman in her father’s house during her youth makes a vow to the LORD or obligates herself by a pledge,
DBY and her father hear her vow, and her bond wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall be silent at her, then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand. BSB BSB: and her father hears about her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
DBY But if her father prohibited her in the day that he heard, none of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand; and Jehovah shall pardon her, because her father prohibited her. BSB BSB: But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, then none of the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. The LORD will absolve her because her father has prohibited her.
DBY And if she have a husband, when she hath her vow upon her or ought that hath passed her lips wherewith she hath bound her soul, BSB BSB: If a woman marries while under a vow or rash promise by which she has bound herself,
DBY and her husband hear it and be silent at her in the day that he heareth it, then her vows shall stand, and her bonds wherewith she bound her soul shall stand. BSB BSB: and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her on that day, then the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
DBY But if her husband prohibit her on the day that he heareth it, and annul her vow which is upon her, and what hath passed her lips, wherewith she hath bound her soul, then Jehovah shall pardon her. BSB BSB: But if her husband prohibits her when he hears of it, he nullifies the vow that binds her or the rash promise she has made, and the LORD will absolve her.
DBY But the vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, — everything wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand against her. BSB BSB: Every vow a widow or divorced woman pledges to fulfill is binding on her.
DBY And if she have vowed in her husband's house, or have bound her soul by an oath with a bond, BSB BSB: If a woman in her husband’s house has made a vow or put herself under an obligation with an oath,
DBY and her husband have heard it, and been silent at her, and hath not prohibited her, then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand. BSB BSB: and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her and does not prohibit her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.
DBY But if her husband have expressly annulled them on the day that he heard them, then nothing of that which is gone out of her lips as to her vows or the bond on her soul, shall stand: her husband hath annulled them; and Jehovah will pardon her. BSB BSB: But if her husband nullifies them on the day he hears of them, then nothing that came from her lips, whether her vows or pledges, shall stand. Her husband has nullified them, and the LORD will absolve her.
DBY Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband can establish it, or her husband can annul it. BSB BSB: Her husband may confirm or nullify any vow or any sworn pledge to deny herself.
DBY And if her husband be altogether silent at her from day to day, then he hath established all her vows or all her bonds which are upon her; he hath confirmed them, for he hath been silent at her in the day that he heard them. BSB BSB: But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he confirms all the vows and pledges that bind her. He has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard about them.
DBY But if he in any way annul them after he hath heard them, then he shall bear her iniquity. BSB BSB: But if he nullifies them after he hears of them, then he will bear her iniquity.”
DBY These are the statutes, which Jehovah commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between a father and his daughter, in her youth in her father's house. BSB BSB: These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the relationship between a man and his wife, and between a father and a young daughter still in his home.
