Greetings from Paul and Timothy (Philippians 1:1–2; Colossians 1:1–2)
DBY Paul, prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timotheus the brother, to Philemon the beloved and our fellow-workman, BSB BSB: Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved fellow worker,
DBY and to the sister Apphia and to Archippus our fellow-soldier, and to the assembly which is in thine house. BSB BSB: to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church that meets at your house:
DBY Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. BSB BSB: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Philemon’s Faith and Love 4 DBY I thank my God, always making mention of thee at my prayers, BSB BSB: I always thank my God, remembering you in my prayers,
DBY hearing of thy love and the faith which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, and towards all the saints, BSB BSB: because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints.
DBY in such sort that thy participation in the faith should become operative in the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in us towards Christ Jesus . BSB BSB: I pray that your partnership in the faith may become effective as you fully acknowledge every good thing that is ours in Christ.
DBY For we have great thankfulness and encouragement through thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother. BSB BSB: I take great joy and encouragement in your love, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.
Paul’s Appeal for Onesimus 8 DBY Wherefore having much boldness in Christ to enjoin thee what is fitting, BSB BSB: So although in Christ I am bold enough to order you to do what is proper,
DBY for love's sake I rather exhort, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also prisoner of Jesus Christ. BSB BSB: I prefer to appeal on the basis of love. For I, Paul, am now aged, and a prisoner of Christ Jesus as well.
DBY I exhort thee for my child, whom I have begotten in my bonds, Onesimus, BSB BSB: I appeal to you for my child Onesimus, whose father I became while I was in chains.
DBY once unserviceable to thee, but now serviceable to thee and to me: BSB BSB: Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
DBY whom I have sent back to thee: but do thou receive him, that is, my bowels: BSB BSB: I am sending back to you him who is my very heart.
DBY whom I was desirous of keeping with myself, that for thee he might minister to me in the bonds of the glad tidings; BSB BSB: I would have liked to keep him with me, so that on your behalf he could minister to me in my chains for the gospel.
DBY but I have wished to do nothing without thy mind, that thy good might not be as of necessity but of willingness: BSB BSB: But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness will not be out of compulsion, but by your own free will.
DBY If therefore thou holdest me to be a partner with thee , receive him as me; BSB BSB: So if you consider me a partner, receive him as you would receive me.
DBY but if he have wronged thee anything or owe anything to thee , put this to my account. BSB BSB: But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge it to my account.
DBY I Paul have written it with mine own hand; I will repay it : that I say not to thee that thou owest even thine own self also to me. BSB BSB: I, Paul, write this with my own hand. I will repay it—not to mention that you owe me your very self.
DBY Yea, brother, I would have profit of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in Christ. BSB BSB: Yes, brother, let me have some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.
DBY Being confident of thine obedience, I have written to thee, knowing that thou wilt do even more than I say. BSB BSB: Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.
DBY But withal prepare me also a lodging; for I hope that I shall be granted to you through your prayers. BSB BSB: In the meantime, prepare a guest room for me, because I hope that through your prayers I will be restored to you.
