BOOK IV From Everlasting to Everlasting 3 DBY Thou makest mortal man to return to dust, and sayest, Return, children of men. BSB BSB: You return man to dust, saying, “Return, O sons of mortals.”
DBY For a thousand years, in thy sight, are as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. BSB BSB: For in Your sight a thousand years are but a day that passes, or a watch of the night.
DBY Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass that groweth up: BSB BSB: You sweep them away in their sleep; they are like the new grass of the morning—
DBY In the morning it flourisheth and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down and withereth. BSB BSB: in the morning it springs up new, but by evening it fades and withers.
DBY For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy fury are we troubled. BSB BSB: For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified by Your wrath.
DBY Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. BSB BSB: You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your presence.
DBY For all our days pass away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a passing thought. BSB BSB: For all our days decline in Your fury; we finish our years with a sigh.
DBY The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if, by reason of strength, they be fourscore years, yet their pride is labour and vanity, for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. BSB BSB: The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty if we are strong—yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.
DBY Who knoweth the power of thine anger? and thy wrath according to the fear of thee? BSB BSB: Who knows the power of Your anger? Your wrath matches the fear You are due.
DBY So teach us to number our days, that we may acquire a wise heart. BSB BSB: So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom.
DBY Return, Jehovah: how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants. BSB BSB: Return, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on Your servants.
DBY Satisfy us early with thy loving-kindness; that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. BSB BSB: Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
DBY Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, according to the years wherein we have seen evil. BSB BSB: Make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil.
DBY Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy majesty unto their sons. BSB BSB: May Your work be shown to Your servants, and Your splendor to their children.
DBY And let the beauty of Jehovah our God be upon us; and establish thou the work of our hands upon us: yea, the work of our hands, establish thou it. BSB BSB: May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish for us the work of our hands—yes, establish the work of our hands!
