Hannah’s Prayer of Thanksgiving (Luke 1:46–56)
DRA My heart hath rejoiced in the Lord, and my horn is exalted in my God: my mouth is enlarged over my enemies: because I have joyed in thy salvation. BSB BSB: At that time Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is exalted in the LORD. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I rejoice in Your salvation.
DRA There is none holy as the Lord is: for there is no other beside thee, and there is none strong like our God. BSB BSB: There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God.
DRA Do not multiply to speak lofty things, boasting: let old matters depart from your mouth: for the Lord is a God of all knowledge, and to him are thoughts prepared. BSB BSB: Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are weighed.
DRA The bow of the mighty is overcome, and the weak are girt with strength. BSB BSB: The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble are equipped with strength.
DRA They that were full before have hired out themselves for bread: and the hungry are filled, so that the barren hath borne many: and she that had many children is weakened. BSB BSB: The well-fed hire themselves out for food, but the starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away.
DRA The Lord killeth and maketh alive, he bringeth down to hell and bringeth back again. BSB BSB: The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to Sheol and raises up.
DRA The Lord maketh poor and maketh rich, he humbleth and he exalteth. BSB BSB: The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts.
DRA He raiseth up the needy from the dust, and lifteth up the poor from the dunghill: that he may sit with princes, and hold the throne of glory. For the poles of the earth are the Lord’s, and upon them he hath set the world. BSB BSB: He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world.
DRA He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness, because no man shall prevail by his own strength. BSB BSB: He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail.
DRA The adversaries of the Lord shall fear him: and upon them shall he thunder in the heavens. The Lord shall judge the ends of the earth, and he shall give empire to his king, and shall exalt the horn of his Christ. BSB BSB: Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder from heaven against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth and will give power to His king. He will exalt the horn of His anointed.”
DRA And Elcana went to Ramatha, to his house: but the child ministered in the sight of the Lord before the face of Heli the priest. BSB BSB: Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy began ministering to the LORD before Eli the priest.
Eli’s Wicked Sons 12 DRA Now the sons of Heli were children of Belial, not knowing the Lord, BSB BSB: Now the sons of Eli were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD
DRA Nor the office of the priests to the people: but whosoever had offered a sacrifice, the servant of the priest came, while the flesh was in boiling, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand, BSB BSB: or for the custom of the priests with the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the servant of the priest would come with a three-pronged meat fork while the meat was boiling
DRA And thrust it into the kettle, or into the caldron, or into the pot, or into the pan: and all that the fleshhook brought up, the priest took to himself. Thus did they to all Israel that came to Silo. BSB BSB: and plunge it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or cooking pot. And the priest would claim for himself whatever the meat fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh.
DRA Also before they burnt the fat, the servant of the priest came, and said to the man that sacrificed: Give me flesh to boil for the priest: for I will not take of thee sodden flesh, but raw. BSB BSB: Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
DRA And he that sacrificed said to him: Let the fat first be burnt today according to the custom, and then take as much as thy soul desireth. But he answered and said to him: Not so: but thou shalt give it me now, or else I will take it by force. BSB BSB: And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
DRA Wherefore the sin of the young men was exceeding great before the Lord: because they withdrew men from the sacrifice of the Lord. BSB BSB: Thus the sin of these young men was severe in the sight of the LORD, for they were treating the LORD’s offering with contempt.
DRA But Samuel ministered before the face of the Lord: being a child girded with a linen ephod. BSB BSB: Now Samuel was ministering before the LORD—a boy wearing a linen ephod.
DRA And his mother made him a little coat, which she brought to him on the appointed days, when she went up with her husband, to offer the solemn sacrifice. BSB BSB: Each year his mother would make him a little robe and bring it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.
DRA And Heli blessed Elcana and his wife: and he said to him: The Lord give thee seed of this woman, for the loan thou hast lent to the Lord. And they went to their own home. BSB BSB: And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one she dedicated to the LORD.” Then they would go home.
DRA And the Lord visited Anna, and she conceived, and bore three sons and two daughters: and the child Samuel became great before the Lord. BSB BSB: So the LORD attended to Hannah, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.
DRA Now Heli was very old, and he heard all that his sons did to all Israel: and how they lay with the women that waited at the door of the tabernacle: BSB BSB: Now Eli was very old, and he heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
DRA And he said to them: Why do ye these kinds of things, which I hear, very wicked things, from all the people? BSB BSB: “Why are you doing these things?” Eli said to his sons. “I hear about your wicked deeds from all these people.
DRA Do not so, my sons: for it is no good report that I hear, that you make the people of the Lord to transgress. BSB BSB: No, my sons; it is not a good report I hear circulating among the LORD’s people.
DRA If one man shall sin against another, God may be appeased in his behalf: but if a man shall sin against the Lord, who shall pray for him? And they hearkened not to the voice of their father, because the Lord would slay them. BSB BSB: If a man sins against another man, God can intercede for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?” But they would not listen to their father, since the LORD intended to put them to death.
DRA But the child Samuel advanced, and grew on, and pleased both the Lord and men. BSB BSB: And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with man.
A Prophecy against the House of Eli 27 DRA And there came a man of God to Heli, and said to him: Thus saith the Lord: Did I not plainly appear to thy father’s house, when they were in Egypt in the house of Pharao? BSB BSB: Then a man of God came to Eli and told him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to your father’s house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s house?
DRA And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my sitar, and burn incense to me, and to wear the ephod before me: and I gave to thy father’s house of all the sacrifices of the children of Israel. BSB BSB: And out of all the tribes of Israel I selected your father to be My priest, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence. I also gave to the house of your father all the food offerings of the Israelites.
DRA Why have you kicked away my victims, and my gifts which I commanded to be offered in the temple: and thou hast rather honoured thy sons than me, to eat the firstfruits of every sacrifice of my people Israel? BSB BSB: Why then do you kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed for My dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than Me by fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’
DRA Wherefore thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father should minister in my sight, for ever. But now saith the Lord: Far be this from me: but whosoever shall glorify me, him will I glorify: but they that despise me, shall be despised. BSB BSB: Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disdained.
DRA Behold the days come: and I will cut off thy arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thy house. BSB BSB: Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that no one in it will reach old age.
DRA And thou shalt see thy rival in the temple, in all the prosperity of Israel, and there shall not be an old man in thy house for ever. BSB BSB: You will see distress in My dwelling place. Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house will ever again reach old age.
DRA However I will not altogether take away a man of thee from my altar: but that thy eyes may faint and thy soul be spent: and a great part of thy house shall die when they come to man’s estate. BSB BSB: And every one of you that I do not cut off from My altar, I will cause your eyes to fail and your heart to grieve. All your descendants will die by the sword of men.
DRA And this shall be a sign to thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, Ophni and Phinees: In one day they shall both of them die. BSB BSB: And this sign shall come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas: They will both die on the same day.
DRA And I will raise me up a faithful priest, who shall do according to my heart, and my soul, and I will build him a faithful house, and he shall walk all days before my anointed. BSB BSB: Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. And I will build for him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed one for all time.
DRA And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall remain in thy house, shall come that he may be prayed for, and shall offer a piece of silver, and a roll of bread, and shall say: Put me, I beseech thee, to somewhat of the priestly office, that I may eat a morsel of bread. BSB BSB: And everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a morsel of bread, pleading, “Please appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
