Shishak Raids Jerusalem (1 Kings 14:25–28)
DRA And when the kingdom of Roboam was strengthened and fortified, he forsook the law of the Lord, and all Israel with him. BSB BSB: After Rehoboam had established his sovereignty and royal power, he and all Israel with him forsook the Law of the LORD.
DRA With twelve hundred chariots and threescore thousand horsemen: and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt, to wit, Libyans, and Troglodites, and Ethiopians. BSB BSB: with 1,200 chariots, 60,000 horsemen, and countless troops who came with him out of Egypt—Libyans, Sukkites, and Cushites.
DRA And he took the strongest cities in Juda, and came to Jerusalem. BSB BSB: He captured the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem.
DRA And Semeias the prophet came to Roboam, and to the princes of Juda, that were gathered together in Jerusalem, fleeing from Sesac, and he said to them: Thus saith the Lord: You have left me, and I have left you in the hand of Sesac. BSB BSB: Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You have forsaken Me; therefore, I have forsaken you into the hand of Shishak.’”
DRA And the princes of Israel, and the king, being in a consternation, said: The Lord is just. BSB BSB: So the leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The LORD is righteous.”
DRA And when the Lord saw that they were humbled, the word of the Lord came to Semeias, saying: Because they are humbled, I will not destroy them, and I will give them a little help, and my wrath shall not fall upon Jerusalem by the hand of Sesac. BSB BSB: When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but will soon grant them deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak.
DRA But yet they shall serve him, that they may know the difference between my service, and the service of a kingdom of the earth. BSB BSB: Nevertheless, they will become his servants, so that they may learn the difference between serving Me and serving the kings of other lands.”
DRA So Sesac king of Egypt departed from Jerusalem, taking away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and of the king’s house, and he took all with him, and the golden shields that Solomon had made, BSB BSB: So King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem and seized the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the royal palace. He took everything, including the gold shields that Solomon had made.
DRA Instead of which the king made brazen ones, and delivered them to the captains of the shieldbearers, who guarded the entrance of the palace. BSB BSB: Then King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them to the care of the captains of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace.
DRA And when the king entered into the house of the Lord, the shieldbearers came and took them, and brought them back again to their armoury. BSB BSB: And whenever the king entered the house of the LORD, the guards would go with him, bearing the shields, and later they would return them to the guardroom.
DRA But yet because they were humbled, the wrath of the Lord turned away from them, and they were not utterly destroyed: for even in Juda there were found good works. BSB BSB: Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the anger of the LORD turned away from him, and He did not destroy him completely. Indeed, conditions were good in Judah.
Rehoboam’s Reign and Death (1 Kings 14:21–24)
DRA King Roboam therefore was strengthened in Jerusalem, and reigned: he was one and forty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord chose out of all the tribes of Israel, to establish his name there: and the name of his mother was Naama an Ammonitess. BSB BSB: Thus King Rehoboam established himself in Jerusalem and reigned. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel in which to put His Name. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite.
DRA But he did evil, and did not prepare his heart to seek the Lord. BSB BSB: And Rehoboam did evil because he did not set his heart to seek the LORD.
DRA Now the acts of Roboam first and last are written in the books of Semeias the prophet, and of Addo the seer, and diligently recorded: and there was war between Roboam and Jeroboam all their days. BSB BSB: Now the acts of Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the Prophet and of Iddo the Seer concerning the genealogies? There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam throughout their days.
DRA And Roboam slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David. And Abia his son reigned in his stead. BSB BSB: And Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. And his son Abijah reigned in his place.
