Witnesses against Israel 1 DRA Hear the word that the Lord hath spoken concerning you, O ye children of Israel: concerning the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying: BSB BSB: Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:
DRA You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore will I visit upon you all your iniquities. BSB BSB: “Only you have I known from all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.”
DRA Shall two walk together except they be agreed? BSB BSB: Can two walk together without agreeing where to go?
DRA Will a lion roar in the forest, if he have no prey? will the lion’s whelp cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing? BSB BSB: Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion growl in his den if he has caught nothing?
DRA Will the bird fall into the snare upon the earth, if there be no fowler? Shall the snare be taken up from the earth, before it hath taken somewhat? BSB BSB: Does a bird land in a snare where no bait has been set? Does a trap spring from the ground when it has nothing to catch?
DRA Shall the trumpet sound in a city, and the people not be afraid? Shall there be evil in a city, which the Lord hath not done? BSB BSB: If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble? If calamity comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?
DRA For the Lord God doth nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets. BSB BSB: Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.
DRA The lion shall roar, who will not fear? The Lord God hath spoken, who shall not prophesy? BSB BSB: The lion has roared—who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken—who will not prophesy?
DRA Publish it in the houses of Azotus, and in the houses of the land of Egypt, and say: Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the many follies in the midst thereof, and them that suffer oppression in the inner rooms thereof. BSB BSB: Proclaim to the citadels of Ashdod and to the citadels of Egypt: “Assemble on the mountains of Samaria; see the great unrest in the city and the acts of oppression in her midst.”
DRA And they have not known to do the right thing, saith the Lord, storing up iniquity, and robberies in their houses. BSB BSB: “For they know not how to do right,” declares the LORD. “They store up violence and destruction in their citadels.”
DRA Therefore thus saith the Lord God: The land shall be in tribulation, and shall be compassed about: and thy strength shall be taken away from thee, and thy houses shall be spoiled. BSB BSB: Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: “An enemy will surround the land; he will pull down your strongholds and plunder your citadels.”
DRA Thus saith the Lord: As if a shepherd should get out of the lion’s mouth two legs, or the tip of the ear: so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria, in a piece of a bed, and in the couch of Damascus. BSB BSB: This is what the LORD says: “As the shepherd snatches from the mouth of the lion two legs or a piece of an ear, so the Israelites dwelling in Samaria will be rescued having just the corner of a bed or the cushion of a couch.
DRA Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob, saith the Lord the God of hosts: BSB BSB: Hear and testify against the house of Jacob, declares the Lord GOD, the God of Hosts.
DRA That in the day when I shall begin to visit the transgressions of Israel, I will visit upon him, and upon the altars of Bethel: and the horns of the altars shall be cut off, and shall fall to the ground. BSB BSB: On the day I punish Israel for their transgressions, I will visit destruction on the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off, and they will fall to the ground.
