New Stone Tablets (Deuteronomy 10:1–11)
DRA And after this he said: Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the former, and I will write upon them the words which were in the tables, which thou brokest. BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the originals, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.
DRA Be ready in the morning, that thou mayst forthwith go up into mount Sinai, and thou shalt stand with me upon the top of the mount. BSB BSB: Be ready in the morning, and come up on Mount Sinai to present yourself before Me on the mountaintop.
DRA Let no man go up with thee: and let not any man be seen throughout all the mount: neither let the oxen nor the sheep feed over against it. BSB BSB: No one may go up with you; in fact, no one may be seen anywhere on the mountain—not even the flocks or herds may graze in front of the mountain.”
DRA Then he cut out two tables of stone, such as had been before: and rising very early he went up into the mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, carrying with him the tables. BSB BSB: So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals. He rose early in the morning, and taking the two stone tablets in his hands, he went up Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him.
DRA And when the Lord was come down in a cloud, Moses stood with him, calling upon the name of the Lord. BSB BSB: And the LORD descended in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed His name, the LORD.
DRA And when he passed before him, he said: O the Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, patient and of much compassion, and true, BSB BSB: Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out: “The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness,
DRA Who keepest mercy unto thousands: who takest away iniquity, and wickedness, and sin, and no man of himself is innocent before thee. Who renderest the iniquity of the fathers to the children, and to the grandchildren, unto the third and fourth generation. BSB BSB: maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin. Yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers on their children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”
DRA And Moses making haste, bowed down prostrate unto the earth, and adoring, BSB BSB: Moses immediately bowed down to the ground and worshiped.
DRA Said: If I have found grace in thy sight: O Lord, I beseech thee, that thou wilt go with us, (for it is a stiffnecked people,) and take away our iniquities and sin, and possess us. BSB BSB: “O Lord,” he said, “if I have indeed found favor in Your sight, my Lord, please go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our iniquity and sin, and take us as Your inheritance.”
The LORD Renews the Covenant (2 Corinthians 3:7–18)
DRA The Lord answered: I will make a covenant in the sight of all. I will do signs such as were never seen upon the earth, nor in any nation: that this people, in the midst of whom thou art, may see the terrible work of the Lord which I will do. BSB BSB: And the LORD said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will perform wonders that have never been done in any nation in all the world. All the people among whom you live will see the LORD’s work, for it is an awesome thing that I am doing with you.
DRA Observe all things which this day I command thee: I myself will drive out before thy face the Amorrhite, and the Chanaanite, and the Hethite, and the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite. BSB BSB: Observe what I command you this day. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
DRA Beware thou never join in friendship with the inhabitants of that land, which may be thy ruin: BSB BSB: Be careful not to make a treaty with the inhabitants of the land you are entering, lest they become a snare in your midst.
DRA But destroy their altars, break their statues, and cut down their groves: BSB BSB: Rather, you must tear down their altars, smash their sacred stones, and chop down their Asherah poles.
DRA Adore not any strange god. The Lord his name is Jealous, he is a jealous God. BSB BSB: For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
DRA Make no covenant with the men of those countries lest, when they have committed fornication with their gods, and have adored their idols, some one call thee to eat of the things sacrificed. BSB BSB: Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices.
DRA Neither shalt thou take of their daughters a wife for thy son, lest after they themselves have committed fornication, they make thy sons also to commit fornication with their gods. BSB BSB: And when you take some of their daughters as brides for your sons, their daughters will prostitute themselves to their gods and cause your sons to do the same.
DRA Thou shalt not make to thyself any molten gods. BSB BSB: You shall make no molten gods for yourselves.
DRA Thou shalt keep the feast of the unleavened bread. Seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee in the time of the month of the new corn: for in the month of the springtime thou camest out from Egypt. BSB BSB: You are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days at the appointed time in the month of Abib, you are to eat unleavened bread as I commanded you. For in the month of Abib you came out of Egypt.
DRA All of the male kind, that openeth the womb, shall be mine. Of all beasts, both of oxen and of sheep, it shall be mine. BSB BSB: The first offspring of every womb belongs to Me, including all the firstborn males among your livestock, whether cattle or sheep.
DRA The firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a sheep: but if thou wilt not give a price for it, it shall be slain. The firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem: neither shalt thou appear before me empty. BSB BSB: You must redeem the firstborn of a donkey with a lamb; but if you do not redeem it, you are to break its neck. You must redeem all the firstborn of your sons. No one shall appear before Me empty-handed.
DRA Six days shalt thou work, the seventh day thou shalt cease to plough, and to reap. BSB BSB: Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even in the seasons of plowing and harvesting, you must rest.
DRA Thou shalt keep the feast of weeks with the firstfruits of the corn of thy wheat harvest, and the feast when the time of the year returneth that all things are laid in. BSB BSB: And you are to celebrate the Feast of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year.
DRA Three times in a year all thy males shall appear in the sight of the Almighty Lord the God of Israel. BSB BSB: Three times a year all your males are to appear before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel.
DRA For when I shall have taken away the nations from thy face, and shall have enlarged thy borders, no man shall lie in wait against thy land when thou shalt go up, and appear in the sight of the Lord thy God thrice in a year. BSB BSB: For I will drive out the nations before you and enlarge your borders, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before the LORD your God.
DRA Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice upon leaven: neither shall there remain in the morning any thing of the victim of the solemnity of the Lord. BSB BSB: Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to Me along with anything leavened, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Feast remain until morning.
DRA The first of the fruits of thy ground thou shalt offer in the house of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in the milk of his dam. BSB BSB: Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God. You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”
DRA And the Lord said to Moses: Write these words by which I have made a covenant both with thee and with Israel. BSB BSB: The LORD also said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”
DRA And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights: he neither ate bread nor drank water, and he wrote upon the tables the ten words of the covenant. BSB BSB: So Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.
DRA And when Moses came down from the mount Sinai, he held the two tables of the testimony, and he knew not that his face was horned from the conversation of the Lord. BSB BSB: And when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was unaware that his face had become radiant from speaking with the LORD.
DRA And Aaron and the children of Israel seeing the face of Moses horned, were afraid to come near. BSB BSB: Aaron and all the Israelites looked at Moses, and behold, his face was radiant. And they were afraid to approach him.
DRA And being called by him, they returned, both Aaron and the rulers of the congregation. And after that he spoke to them. BSB BSB: But Moses called out to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke to them.
DRA And all the children of Israel came to him: and he gave them in commandment all that he had heard of the Lord in mount Sinai. BSB BSB: And after this all the Israelites came near, and Moses commanded them to do everything that the LORD had told him on Mount Sinai.
DRA And having done speaking, he put a veil upon his face. BSB BSB: When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.
DRA But when he went in to the Lord, and spoke with him, he took it away until he came forth, and then he spoke to the children of Israel all things that had been commanded him. BSB BSB: But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he would remove the veil until he came out. And when he came out, he would tell the Israelites what he had been commanded,
DRA And they saw that the face of Moses when he came out was horned, but he covered his face again, if at any time he spoke to them. BSB BSB: and the Israelites would see that the face of Moses was radiant. So Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the LORD.
