The Soul Who Sins Will Die 2 DRA That you use among you this parable as a proverb in the land of Israel, saying: The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge. BSB BSB: “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge’?
DRA As I live, saith the Lord God, this parable shall be no more to you a proverb in Israel. BSB BSB: As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.
DRA Behold all souls are mine: as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, the same shall die. BSB BSB: Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son are Mine. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
DRA And if a man be just, and do judgment and justice, BSB BSB: Now suppose a man is righteous and does what is just and right:
DRA And hath not eaten upon the mountains, nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel: and hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife, nor come near to a menstruous woman: BSB BSB: He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife or approach a woman during her period.
DRA And hath not wronged any man: but hath restored the pledge to the debtor, hath taken nothing away by violence: hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment: BSB BSB: He does not oppress another, but restores the pledge to the debtor. He does not commit robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.
DRA Hath not lent upon usury, nor taken any increase: hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, and hath executed true judgment between man and man: BSB BSB: He does not engage in usury or take excess interest, but he withholds his hand from iniquity and executes true justice between men.
DRA Hath walked in my commandments, and kept my judgments, to do truth: he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God. BSB BSB: He follows My statutes and faithfully keeps My ordinances. That man is righteous; surely he will live, declares the Lord GOD.
DRA And if he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that hath done some one of these things: BSB BSB: Now suppose that man has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these things,
DRA Though he doth not all these things, but that eateth upon the mountains, and that defileth his neighbour’s wife: BSB BSB: though the father has done none of them: Indeed, the son eats at the mountain and defiles his neighbor’s wife.
DRA That grieveth the needy and the poor, that taketh away by violence, that restoreth not the pledge, and that lifteth up his eyes to idols, that committeth abomination: BSB BSB: He oppresses the poor and needy; he commits robbery and does not restore a pledge. He lifts his eyes to idols; he commits abominations.
DRA That giveth upon usury, and that taketh an increase: shall such a one live? he shall not live. Seeing he hath done all these detestable things, he shall surely die, his blood shall be upon him. BSB BSB: He engages in usury and takes excess interest. Will this son live? He will not! Since he has committed all these abominations, he will surely die; his blood will be on his own head.
DRA But if he beget a son, who, seeing all his father’s sins, which he hath done, is afraid, and shall not do the like to them: BSB BSB: Now suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father has committed, considers them, and does not do likewise:
DRA That hath not eaten upon the mountains, nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, and hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife: BSB BSB: He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife.
DRA And hath not grieved any man, nor withholden the pledge, nor taken away with violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and covered the naked with a garment: BSB BSB: He does not oppress another, or retain a pledge, or commit robbery. He gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with clothing.
DRA That hath turned away his hand from injuring the poor, hath not taken usury and increase, but hath executed my judgments, and hath walked in my commandments: this man shall not die for the iniquity of his father, but living he shall live. BSB BSB: He withholds his hand from harming the poor and takes no interest or usury. He keeps My ordinances and follows My statutes. Such a man will not die for his father’s iniquity. He will surely live.
DRA As for his father, because he oppressed and offered violence to his brother, and wrought evil in the midst of his people, behold he is dead in his own iniquity. BSB BSB: As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what was wrong among his people.
DRA And you say: Why hath not the son borne the iniquity of his father? Verily, because the son hath wrought judgment and justice, hath kept all my commandments, and done them, living, he shall live. BSB BSB: Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son bear the iniquity of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will surely live.
DRA But if the wicked do penance for all his sins which he hath committed, and keep all my commandments, and do judgment, and justice, living he shall live, and shall not die. BSB BSB: But if the wicked man turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.
DRA I will not remember all his iniquities that he hath done: in his justice which he hath wrought, he shall live. BSB BSB: None of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him. Because of the righteousness he has practiced, he will live.
DRA Is it my will that a sinner should die, saith the Lord God, and not that he should be converted from his ways, and live? BSB BSB: Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Lord GOD. Wouldn’t I prefer that he turn from his ways and live?
DRA But if the just man turn himself away from his justice, and do iniquity according to all the abominations which the wicked man useth to work, shall he live? all his justices which he hath done, shall not be remembered: in the prevarication, by which he hath prevaricated, and in his sin, which he hath committed, in them he shall die. BSB BSB: But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, committing the same abominations as the wicked, will he live? None of the righteous acts he did will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness and sin he has committed, he will die.
DRA And you have said: The way of the Lord is not right. Hear ye, therefore, O house of Israel: Is it my way that is not right, and are not rather your ways perverse? BSB BSB: Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is it My way that is unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
DRA For when the just turneth himself away from his justice, and committeth iniquity, he shall die therein: in the injustice that he hath wrought he shall die. BSB BSB: If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and practices iniquity, he will die for this. He will die because of the iniquity he has committed.
DRA And when the wicked turneth himself away from his wickedness, which he hath wrought, and doeth judgment, and justice: he shall save his soul alive. BSB BSB: But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life.
DRA Because he considereth and turneth away himself from all his iniquities which he hath wrought, he shall surely live, and not die. BSB BSB: Because he considered and turned from all the transgressions he had committed, he will surely live; he will not die.
DRA And the children of Israel say: The way of the Lord is not right. Are not my ways right, O house of Israel, and are not rather your ways perverse? BSB BSB: Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are My ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
DRA Therefore will I judge every man according to his ways, O house of Israel, saith the Lord God. Be converted, and do penance for all your iniquities: and iniquity shall not be your ruin. BSB BSB: Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so that your iniquity will not become your downfall.
DRA Cast away from you all your transgressions, by which you have transgressed, and make to yourselves a new heart, and a new spirit: and why will you die, O house of Israel? BSB BSB: Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions you have committed, and fashion for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel?
DRA For I desire not the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God, return ye and live. BSB BSB: For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death, declares the Lord GOD. So repent and live!
