God’s Sword of Judgment 1 DRA And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: BSB BSB: And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
DRA Son of man, set thy face toward Jerusalem, and let thy speech flow towards the holy places, and prophesy against the land of Israel: BSB BSB: “Son of man, set your face against Jerusalem and preach against the sanctuaries. Prophesy against the land of Israel
DRA And say to the land of Israel: Thus saith the Lord God: Behold I come against thee, and I will draw forth my sword out of its sheath, and will cut off in thee the just, and the wicked. BSB BSB: and tell her that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am against you, and I will draw My sword from its sheath and cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.
DRA And forasmuch as I have cut off in thee the just, and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth out of its sheath against all flesh, from the south even to the north. BSB BSB: Because I will cut off both the righteous and the wicked, My sword will be unsheathed against everyone from south to north.
DRA That all flesh may know that I the Lord have drawn my sword out of its sheath not to be turned back. BSB BSB: Then all flesh will know that I, the LORD, have taken My sword from its sheath, not to return it again.’
DRA And thou, son of man, mourn with the breaking of thy loins, and with bitterness sigh before them. BSB BSB: But you, son of man, groan! Groan before their eyes with a broken heart and bitter grief.
DRA And when they shall say to thee: Why mournest thou? thou shalt say: For that which I hear: because it cometh, and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be made feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and water shall run down every knee: behold it cometh, and it shall be done, saith the Lord God. BSB BSB: And when they ask, ‘Why are you groaning?’ you are to say, ‘Because of the news that is coming. Every heart will melt, and every hand will go limp. Every spirit will faint, and every knee will turn to water.’ Yes, it is coming and it will surely happen, declares the Lord GOD.”
DRA And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: BSB BSB: Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
DRA Son of man, prophesy, and say: Thus saith the Lord God: Say: The sword, the sword is sharpened, and furbished. BSB BSB: “Son of man, prophesy and tell them that this is what the Lord says: ‘A sword, a sword, sharpened and polished—
DRA It is sharpened to kill victims: it is furbished that it may glitter: thou removest the sceptre of my son, thou hast cut down every tree. BSB BSB: it is sharpened for the slaughter, polished to flash like lightning! Should we rejoice in the scepter of My son? The sword despises every such stick.
DRA And I have given it to be furbished, that it may be handled: this sword is sharpened, and it is furbished, that it may be in the hand of the slayer. BSB BSB: The sword is appointed to be polished, to be grasped in the hand. It is sharpened and polished, to be placed in the hand of the slayer.
DRA Cry, and howl, O son of man, for this sword is upon my people, it is upon all the princes of Israel, that are fled: they are delivered up to the sword with my people, strike therefore upon thy thigh, BSB BSB: Cry out and wail, O son of man, for the sword is wielded against My people; it is against all the princes of Israel! They are tossed to the sword with My people; therefore strike your thigh.
DRA Because it is tried: and that when it shall overthrow the sceptre, and it shall not be, saith the Lord God. BSB BSB: Surely testing will come! And what if even the scepter, which the sword despises, does not continue?’ declares the Lord GOD.
DRA Thou therefore, O son of man, prophesy, and strike thy hands together, and let the sword be doubled, and let the sword of the slain be tripled: this is the sword of a great slaughter, that maketh them stand amazed, BSB BSB: ‘So then, son of man, prophesy and strike your hands together. Let the sword strike two times, even three. It is a sword that slays, a sword of great slaughter closing in on every side!
DRA And languish in heart, and that multiplieth ruins. In all their gates I have set the dread of the sharp sword, the sword that is furbished to glitter, that is made ready for slaughter. BSB BSB: So that their hearts may melt and many may stumble, I have appointed at all their gates a sword for slaughter. Yes, it is ready to flash like lightning; it is drawn for slaughter.
DRA Be thou sharpened, go to the right hand, or to the left, which way soever thou hast a mind to set thy face. BSB BSB: Slash to the right; set your blade to the left—wherever your blade is directed.
DRA And I will clap my hands together, and will satisfy my indignation: I the Lord have spoken. BSB BSB: I too will strike My hands together, and I will satisfy My wrath.’ I, the LORD, have spoken.”
DRA And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: BSB BSB: Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
DRA And thou son of man, set thee two ways, for the sword of the king of Babylon to come: both shall come forth out of one land: and with his hand he shall draw lots, he shall consult at the head of the way of the city. BSB BSB: “Now you, son of man, mark out two roads for the sword of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same land. And make a signpost where the road branches off to each city.
DRA Thou shalt make a way that the sword may come to Rabbath of the children of Ammon, and to Juda unto Jerusalem the strong city. BSB BSB: Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the Ammonites, and another against Judah into fortified Jerusalem.
DRA For the king of Babylon stood in the highway, at the head of two ways, seeking divination, shuffling arrows: he inquired of the idols, and consulted entrails. BSB BSB: For the king of Babylon stands at the fork in the road, at the junction of the two roads, to seek an omen: He shakes the arrows, he consults the idols, he examines the liver.
DRA On his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to set battering rams, to open the mouth in slaughter, to lift up the voice in howling, to set engines against the gates, to cast up a mount, to build forts. BSB BSB: In his right hand appears the portent for Jerusalem, where he is to set up battering rams, to call for the slaughter, to lift a battle cry, to direct the battering rams against the gates, to build a ramp, and to erect a siege wall.
DRA And he shall be in their eyes as one consulting the oracle in vain, and imitating the leisure of sabbaths: but he will call to remembrance the iniquity that they may be taken. BSB BSB: It will seem like a false omen to the eyes of those who have sworn allegiance to him, but it will draw attention to their guilt and take them captive.
DRA Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Because you have remembered your iniquity, and have discovered your prevarications, and your sins have appeared in all your devices: because, I say, you have remembered, you shall be taken with the hand. BSB BSB: Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because you have drawn attention to your guilt, exposing your transgressions, so that your sins are revealed in all your deeds—because you have come to remembrance—you shall be taken in hand.
DRA But thou profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come that hath been appointed in the time of iniquity: BSB BSB: And you, O profane and wicked prince of Israel, the day has come for your final punishment.’
DRA Thus saith the Lord God: Remove the diadem, take off the crown: is it not this that hath exalted the low one, and brought down him that was high? BSB BSB: This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Remove the turban, and take off the crown. Things will not remain as they are: Exalt the lowly and bring low the exalted.
DRA I will shew it to be iniquity, iniquity, iniquity: but this was not done till he came to whom judgment belongeth, and I will give it him. BSB BSB: A ruin, a ruin, I will make it a ruin! And it will not be restored until the arrival of Him to whom it belongs, to whom I have assigned the right of judgment.’
DRA And thou son of man, prophesy, and say: Thus saith the Lord God concerning the children of Ammon, and concerning their reproach, and thou shalt say: sword, O sword, come out of the scabbard to kill, be furbished to destroy, and to glitter, BSB BSB: Now prophesy, son of man, and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says concerning the Ammonites and their contempt: ‘A sword! A sword is drawn for slaughter, polished to consume, to flash like lightning—
DRA Whilst they see vain things in thy regard, and they divine lies: to bring thee upon the necks of the wicked that are wounded, whose appointed day is come in the time of iniquity. BSB BSB: while they offer false visions for you and lying divinations about you—to be placed on the necks of the wicked who are slain, whose day has come, the time of their final punishment.
DRA Return into thy sheath. I will judge thee in the place wherein thou wast created, in the land of thy nativity. BSB BSB: Return the sword to its sheath! In the place where you were created, in the land of your origin, I will judge you.
DRA And I will pour out upon thee my indignation: in the fire of my rage will I blow upon thee, and will give thee into the hands of men that are brutish and contrive thy destruction. BSB BSB: I will pour out My anger upon you; I will breathe the fire of My fury against you; I will hand you over to brutal men, skilled in destruction.
DRA Thou shalt be fuel for the fire, thy blood shall be in the midst of the land, thou shalt be forgotten: for I the Lord have spoken it. BSB BSB: You will be fuel for the fire. Your blood will stain your own land. You will not be remembered, for I, the LORD, have spoken.’”
