The Sabbath Rest (Genesis 2:1–3; Exodus 16:22–30)
DRA Let us fear therefore lest the promise being left of entering into his rest, any of you should be thought to be wanting. BSB BSB: Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it.
DRA For unto us also it hath been declared, in like manner as unto them. But the word of hearing did not profit them, not being mixed with faith of those things they heard. BSB BSB: For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.
DRA For we, who have believed, shall enter into rest; as he said: As I have sworn in my wrath; If they shall enter into my rest; and this indeed when the works from the foundation of the world were finished. BSB BSB: Now we who have believed enter that rest. As for the others, it is just as God has said: “So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’” And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world.
DRA For in a certain place he spoke of the seventh day thus: And God rested the seventh day from all his works. BSB BSB: For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this manner: “And on the seventh day God rested from all His works.”
DRA And in this place again: If they shall enter into my rest. BSB BSB: And again, as He says in the passage above: “They shall never enter My rest.”
DRA Seeing then it remaineth that some are to enter into it, and they, to whom it was first preached, did not enter because of unbelief: BSB BSB: Since, then, it remains for some to enter His rest, and since those who formerly heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
DRA Again he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, Today, after so long a time, as it is above said: Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts. BSB BSB: God again designated a certain day as “Today,” when a long time later He spoke through David as was just stated: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
DRA For if Jesus had given them rest, he would never have afterwards spoken of another day. BSB BSB: For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
DRA There remaineth therefore a day of rest for the people of God. BSB BSB: There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
DRA For he that is entered into his rest, the same also hath rested from his works, as God did from his. BSB BSB: For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His.
DRA Let us hasten therefore to enter into that rest; lest any man fall into the same example of unbelief. BSB BSB: Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same pattern of disobedience.
The Living Word (2 Timothy 3:10–17)
DRA For the word of God is living and effectual, and more piercing than any two edged sword; and reaching unto the division of the soul and the spirit, of the joints also and the marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. BSB BSB: For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
DRA Neither is there any creature invisible in his sight: but all things are naked and open to his eyes, to whom our speech is. BSB BSB: Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
DRA Having therefore a great high priest that hath passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God: let us hold fast our confession. BSB BSB: Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess.
DRA Let us go therefore with confidence to the throne of grace: that we may obtain mercy, and find grace in seasonable aid. BSB BSB: Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
