The Root of Jesse 1 DRA And there shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse, and a flower shall rise up out of his root. BSB BSB: Then a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.
2 DRA And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the spirit of counsel, and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of godliness. BSB BSB: The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.
3 DRA And he shall be filled with the spirit of the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge according to the sight of the eyes, nor reprove according to the hearing of the ears. BSB BSB: And He will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what His eyes see, and He will not decide by what His ears hear,
4 DRA But he shall judge the poor with justice, and shall reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: land he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. BSB BSB: but with righteousness He will judge the poor, and with equity He will decide for the lowly of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth and slay the wicked with the breath of His lips.
5 DRA And justice shall be the girdle of his loins: and faith the girdle of his reins. BSB BSB: Righteousness will be the belt around His hips, and faithfulness the sash around His waist.
7 DRA The calf and the bear shall feed: their young ones shall rest together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. BSB BSB: The cow will graze with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
8 DRA And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp: and the weaned child shall thrust his hand into the den of the basilisk. BSB BSB: The infant will play by the cobra’s den, and the toddler will reach into the viper’s nest.
9 DRA They shall not hurt, nor shall they kill in all my holy mountain, for the earth is filled with the knowledge of the Lord, as the covering waters of the sea. BSB BSB: They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the sea is full of water.
10 DRA In that day the root of Jesse, who standeth for an ensign of the people, him the Gentiles shall beseech, and his sepulchre shall be glorious. BSB BSB: On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples. The nations will seek Him, and His place of rest will be glorious.
11 DRA And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand the second time to possess the remnant of his people, which shall be left from the Assyrians, and from Egypt, and from Phetros, and from Ethiopia, and from Elam, and from Sennaar, and from Emath, and from the islands of the sea. BSB BSB: On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time to recover the remnant of His people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
12 DRA And he shall set up a standard unto the nations, and shall assemble the fugitives of Israel, and shall gather together the dispersed of Juda from the four quarters of the earth. BSB BSB: He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; He will collect the scattered of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
13 DRA And the envy of Ephraim shall be taken away, and the enemies of Juda shall perish: Ephraim shall not envy Juda, and Juda shall not fight against Ephraim. BSB BSB: Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart, and the adversaries of Judah will be cut off. Ephraim will no longer envy Judah, nor will Judah harass Ephraim.
14 DRA But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines by the sea, they together shall spoil the children of the east: Edom, and Moab shall be under the rule of their hand, and the children of Ammon shall be obedient. BSB BSB: They will swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines to the west; together they will plunder the sons of the east. They will lay their hands on Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites will be subject to them.
15 DRA And the Lord shall lay waste the tongue of the sea of Egypt, and shall lift up his hand over the river in the strength of his spirit: and he shall strike it in the seven streams, so that men may pass through it in their shoes. BSB BSB: The LORD will devote to destruction the gulf of the Sea of Egypt; with a scorching wind He will sweep His hand over the Euphrates. He will split it into seven streams for men to cross with dry sandals.
16 DRA And there shall be a highway for the remnant of my people, which shall be left from the Assyrians: as there was for Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt. BSB BSB: There will be a highway for the remnant of His people who remain from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
