A Warning to the Rich (Proverbs 23:1–5; 1 Timothy 6:17–19)
DRA Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl in your miseries, which shall come upon you. BSB BSB: Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail over the misery to come upon you.
DRA Your riches are corrupted: and your garments are motheaten. BSB BSB: Your riches have rotted and moths have eaten your clothes.
DRA Your gold and silver is cankered: and the rust of them shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh like fire. You have stored up to yourselves wrath against the last days. BSB BSB: Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days.
DRA Behold the hire of the labourers, who have reaped down your fields, which by fraud has been kept back by you, crieth: and the cry of them hath entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. BSB BSB: Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
DRA You have feasted upon earth: and in riotousness you have nourished your hearts, in the day of slaughter. BSB BSB: You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter.
DRA You have condemned and put to death the Just One, and he resisted you not. BSB BSB: You have condemned and murdered the righteous, who did not resist you.
Patience in Suffering (Job 1:1–5)
DRA Be patient therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth: patiently bearing till he receive the early and latter rain. BSB BSB: Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil—how patient he is for the fall and spring rains.
DRA Be you therefore also patient, and strengthen your hearts: for the coming of the Lord is at hand. BSB BSB: You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.
DRA Grudge not, brethren, one against another, that you may not be judged. Behold the judge standeth before the door. BSB BSB: Do not complain about one another, brothers, so that you will not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing at the door!
DRA Take, my brethren, for an example of suffering evil, of labour and patience, the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord. BSB BSB: Brothers, as an example of patience in affliction, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
DRA Behold, we account them blessed who have endured. You have heard of the patience of Job, and you have seen the end of the Lord, that the Lord is merciful and compassionate. BSB BSB: See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
DRA But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, nor by the earth, nor by any other oath. But let your speech be, yea, yea: no, no: that you fall not under judgment. BSB BSB: Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth or by any other oath. Simply let your “Yes” be yes, and your “No,” no, so that you will not fall under judgment.
The Prayer of Faith 13 DRA Is any of you sad? Let him pray. Is he cheerful in mind? Let him sing. BSB BSB: Is any one of you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises.
DRA And the prayer of faith shall save the sick man: and the Lord shall raise him up: and if he be in sins, they shall be forgiven him. BSB BSB: And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
DRA Confess therefore your sins one to another: and pray one for another, that you may be saved. For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much. BSB BSB: Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.
DRA Elias was a man passible like unto us: and with prayer he prayed that it might not rain upon the earth, and it rained not for three years and six months. BSB BSB: Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
DRA And he prayed again: and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. BSB BSB: Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth yielded its crops.
Restoring a Sinner 19 DRA My brethren, if any of you err from the truth, and one convert him: BSB BSB: My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back,
DRA He must know that he who causeth a sinner to be converted from the error of his way, shall save his soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of sins. BSB BSB: consider this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
