The Army of Locusts (Amos 7:1–9)
DRA Blow ye the trumpet in Sion, sound an alarm in my holy mountain, let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: because the day of the Lord cometh, because it is nigh at hand, BSB BSB: Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm on My holy mountain! Let all who dwell in the land tremble, for the Day of the LORD is coming; indeed, it is near—
DRA A day of darkness, and of gloominess, a day of clouds and whirlwinds: a numerous and strong people as the morning spread upon the mountains: the like to it hath not been from the beginning, nor shall be after it even to the years of generation and generation. BSB BSB: a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like the dawn overspreading the mountains a great and strong army appears, such as never was of old, nor will ever be in ages to come.
DRA Before the face thereof a devouring fire, and behind it a burning flame: the land is like a garden of pleasure before it, and behind it a desolate wilderness, neither is there any one that can escape it. BSB BSB: Before them a fire devours, and behind them a flame scorches. The land before them is like the Garden of Eden, but behind them, it is like a desert wasteland—surely nothing will escape them.
DRA The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses, and they shall run like horsemen. BSB BSB: Their appearance is like that of horses, and they gallop like swift steeds.
DRA They shall leap like the noise of chariots upon the tops of mountains, like the noise of a flame of fire devouring the stubble, as a strong people prepared to battle. BSB BSB: With a sound like that of chariots they bound over the mountaintops, like the crackling of fire consuming stubble, like a mighty army deployed for battle.
DRA At their presence the people shall be in grievous pains: all faces shall be made like a kettle. BSB BSB: Nations writhe in horror before them; every face turns pale.
DRA They shall run like valiant men: like men of war they shall scale the wall: the men shall march every one on his way, and they shall not turn aside from their ranks. BSB BSB: They charge like mighty men; they scale the walls like men of war. Each one marches in formation, not swerving from the course.
DRA No one shall press upon his brother: they shall walk every one in his path: yea, and they shall fall through the windows, and shall take no harm. BSB BSB: They do not jostle one another; each proceeds in his path. They burst through the defenses, never breaking ranks.
DRA They shall enter into the city: they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up the houses, they shall come in at the windows as a thief. BSB BSB: They storm the city; they run along the wall; they climb into houses, entering through windows like thieves.
DRA At their presence the earth hath trembled, the heavens are moved: the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars have withdrawn their shining. BSB BSB: Before them the earth quakes; the heavens tremble. The sun and moon grow dark, and the stars lose their brightness.
DRA And the Lord hath uttered his voice before the face of his army: for his armies are exceeding great, for they are strong and execute his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible: and who can stand it? BSB BSB: The LORD raises His voice in the presence of His army. Indeed, His camp is very large, for mighty are those who obey His command. For the Day of the LORD is great and very dreadful. Who can endure it?
Return with All Your Heart 12 DRA Now therefore saith the Lord: Be converted to me with all your heart, in fasting, and in weeping, and in mourning. BSB BSB: “Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning.”
DRA And rend your hearts, and not your garments, and turn to the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, patient and rich in mercy, and ready to repent of the evil. BSB BSB: So rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending disaster.
DRA Who knoweth but he will return, and forgive, and leave a blessing behind him, sacrifice and libation to the Lord your God? BSB BSB: Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing behind Him—grain and drink offerings for the LORD your God.
DRA Blow the trumpet in Sion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, BSB BSB: Blow the ram’s horn in Zion, consecrate a fast, proclaim a sacred assembly.
DRA Gather together the people, sanctify the church, assemble the ancients, gather together the little ones, and them that suck at the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth from his bed, and the bride out of her bride chamber. BSB BSB: Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the aged, gather the children, even those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her chamber.
DRA Between the porch and the altar the priests the Lord’s ministers shall weep, and shall say: Spare, O Lord, spare thy people: and give not thy inheritance to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them. Why should they say among the nations: Where is their God? BSB BSB: Let the priests who minister before the LORD weep between the portico and the altar, saying, “Spare Your people, O LORD, and do not make Your heritage a reproach, an object of scorn among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”
Restoration Promised 18 DRA The Lord hath been zealous for his land, and hath spared his people. BSB BSB: Then the LORD became jealous for His land, and He spared His people.
DRA And the Lord answered and said to his people: Behold I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and you shall be filled with them: and I will no more make you a reproach among the nations. BSB BSB: And the LORD answered His people: “Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and by them you will be satisfied. I will never again make you a reproach among the nations.
DRA And I will remove far off from you the northern enemy: and I will drive him into a land unpassable, and desert, with his face towards the east sea, and his hinder part towards the utmost sea: and his stench shall ascend, and his rottenness shall go up, because he hath done proudly. BSB BSB: The northern army I will drive away from you, banishing it to a barren and desolate land, its front ranks into the Eastern Sea, and its rear guard into the Western Sea. And its stench will rise; its foul odor will ascend. For He has done great things.
DRA Fear not, O land, be glad and rejoice: for the Lord hath done great things. BSB BSB: Do not be afraid, O land; rejoice and be glad, for the LORD has done great things.
DRA Fear not, ye beasts of the fields: for the beautiful places of the wilderness are sprung, for the tree hath brought forth its fruit, the fig tree, and the vine have yielded their strength. BSB BSB: Do not be afraid, O beasts of the field, for the open pastures have turned green, the trees bear their fruit, and the fig tree and vine yield their best.
DRA And you, O children of Sion, rejoice, and be joyful in the Lord your God: because he hath given you a teacher of justice, and he will make the early and the latter rain to come down to you as in the beginning. BSB BSB: Be glad, O children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God, for He has given you the autumn rains for your vindication. He sends you showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before.
DRA And the floors shall be filled with wheat, and the presses shall overflow with wine and oil. BSB BSB: The threshing floors will be full of grain, and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.
DRA And I will restore to you the ears which the locust, and the bruchus, and the mildew, and the palmerworm have eaten; my great host which I sent upon you. BSB BSB: I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts—the swarming locust, the young locust, the destroying locust, and the devouring locust—My great army that I sent against you.
DRA And you shall eat in plenty, and shall be filled: and you shall praise the name of the Lord your God, who hath done wonders with you, and my people shall not be confounded for ever. BSB BSB: You will have plenty to eat, until you are satisfied. You will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you. My people will never again be put to shame.
DRA And you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel: and I am the Lord your God, and there is none besides: and my people shall not be confounded for ever. BSB BSB: Then you will know that I am present in Israel and that I am the LORD your God, and there is no other. My people will never again be put to shame.
I Will Pour Out My Spirit (Acts 2:14–36)
DRA And it shall come to pass after this, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy: your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. BSB BSB: And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
DRA Moreover upon my servants and handmaids in those days I will pour forth my spirit. BSB BSB: Even on My menservants and maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
DRA And I will shew wonders in heaven; and in earth, blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke. BSB BSB: I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.
DRA The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood: before the great and dreadful day of the Lord doth come. BSB BSB: The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and awesome Day of the LORD.
DRA And it shall come to pass, that every one that shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved: for in mount Sion, and in Jerusalem shall be salvation, as the Lord hath said, and in the residue whom the Lord shall call. BSB BSB: And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has promised, among the remnant called by the LORD.
