The Death of Lazarus 1 DRA Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister. BSB BSB: At this time a man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
DRA (And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.) BSB BSB: (Mary, whose brother Lazarus was sick, was to anoint the Lord with perfume and wipe His feet with her hair.)
DRA His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. BSB BSB: So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one You love is sick.”
DRA And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it. BSB BSB: When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
DRA Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus. BSB BSB: Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
DRA When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days. BSB BSB: So on hearing that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was for two days,
DRA Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again. BSB BSB: and then He said to the disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”
DRA The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again? BSB BSB: “Rabbi,” they replied, “the Jews just tried to stone You, and You are going back there?”
DRA Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world: BSB BSB: Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the daytime, he will not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world.
DRA But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him. BSB BSB: But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble, because he has no light.”
DRA These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. BSB BSB: After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.”
DRA His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. BSB BSB: His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get better.”
DRA But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep. BSB BSB: They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus.
DRA Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead. BSB BSB: So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,
DRA And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him. BSB BSB: and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
DRA Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him. BSB BSB: Then Thomas called Didymus said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.”
Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary 17 DRA Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave. BSB BSB: When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already spent four days in the tomb.
DRA (Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.) BSB BSB: Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, a little less than two miles away,
DRA And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. BSB BSB: and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them in the loss of their brother.
DRA Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home. BSB BSB: So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet Him, but Mary stayed at home.
DRA Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. BSB BSB: Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
DRA But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. BSB BSB: But even now I know that God will give You whatever You ask of Him.”
DRA Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again. BSB BSB: “Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her.
DRA Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day. BSB BSB: Martha replied, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
DRA Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live: BSB BSB: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies.
DRA And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this? BSB BSB: And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
DRA She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world. BSB BSB: “Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”
DRA And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee. BSB BSB: After Martha had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside to tell her, “The Teacher is here and is asking for you.”
DRA She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him. BSB BSB: And when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him.
DRA For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him. BSB BSB: Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him.
DRA The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there. BSB BSB: When the Jews who were in the house consoling Mary saw how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
DRA When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. BSB BSB: When Mary came to Jesus and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
DRA And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see. BSB BSB: “Where have you put him?” He asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they answered.
DRA The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him. BSB BSB: Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”
DRA But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die? BSB BSB: But some of them asked, “Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind also have kept Lazarus from dying?”
Jesus Raises Lazarus (Acts 9:36–43)
DRA Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it. BSB BSB: Jesus, once again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.
DRA Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days. BSB BSB: “Take away the stone,” Jesus said. “Lord, by now he stinks,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man. “It has already been four days.”
DRA Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God? BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”
DRA They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me. BSB BSB: So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
DRA And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. BSB BSB: I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this for the benefit of the people standing here, so they may believe that You sent Me.”
DRA When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth. BSB BSB: After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
DRA And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go. BSB BSB: The man who had been dead came out with his hands and feet bound in strips of linen, and his face wrapped in a cloth. “Unwrap him and let him go,” Jesus told them.
The Plot to Kill Jesus (Matthew 26:1–5; Mark 14:1–2; Luke 22:1–2)
DRA Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him. BSB BSB: Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in Him.
DRA But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done. BSB BSB: But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
DRA The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles? BSB BSB: Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs.
DRA If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation. BSB BSB: If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
DRA But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing. BSB BSB: But one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all!
DRA Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. BSB BSB: You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”
DRA And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation. BSB BSB: Caiaphas did not say this on his own. Instead, as high priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation,
DRA And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed. BSB BSB: and not only for the nation, but also for the scattered children of God, to gather them together into one.
DRA From that day therefore they devised to put him to death. BSB BSB: So from that day on they plotted to kill Him.
DRA Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples. BSB BSB: As a result, Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but He withdrew to a town called Ephraim in an area near the wilderness. And He stayed there with the disciples.
DRA And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves. BSB BSB: Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many people went up from the country to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover.
DRA They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? BSB BSB: They kept looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple courts, “What do you think? Will He come to the feast at all?”
DRA And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him. BSB BSB: But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him.
