Persecution Foretold (Acts 23:12–22)
DRA These things have I spoken to you, that you may not be scandalized. BSB BSB: “I have told you these things so that you will not fall away.
DRA They will put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he doth a service to God. BSB BSB: They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
DRA And these things will they do to you; because they have not known the Father, nor me. BSB BSB: They will do these things because they have not known the Father or Me.
DRA But these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them. BSB BSB: But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
The Promise of the Holy Spirit (John 14:15–26)
DRA But I told you not these things from the beginning, because I was with you. And now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me: Whither goest thou? BSB BSB: Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
DRA But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart. BSB BSB: Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things.
DRA And when he is come, he will convince the world of sin, and of justice, and of judgment. BSB BSB: And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
DRA Of sin: because they believed not in me. BSB BSB: in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me;
DRA And of justice: because I go to the Father; and you shall see me no longer. BSB BSB: in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;
DRA And of judgment: because the prince of this world is already judged. BSB BSB: and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.
DRA I have yet many things to say to you: but you cannot bear them now. BSB BSB: I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it.
DRA He shall glorify me; because he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it to you. BSB BSB: He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you.
DRA All things whatsoever the Father hath, are mine. Therefore I said, that he shall receive of mine, and shew it to you. BSB BSB: Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you.
DRA A little while, and now you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me: because I go to the Father. BSB BSB: In a little while you will see Me no more, and then after a little while you will see Me.”
Grief Will Turn to Joy 17 DRA Then some of the disciples said one to another: What is this that he saith to us: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me, and, because I go to the Father? BSB BSB: Then some of His disciples asked one another, “Why is He telling us, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
DRA They said therefore: What is this that he saith, A little while? we know not what he speaketh. BSB BSB: They kept asking, “Why is He saying, ‘a little while’? We do not understand what He is saying.”
DRA And Jesus knew that they had a mind to ask him; and he said to them: Of this do you inquire among yourselves, because I said: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me? BSB BSB: Aware that they wanted to question Him, Jesus said to them, “Are you asking one another why I said, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’?
DRA Amen, amen I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. BSB BSB: Truly, truly, I tell you, you will weep and wail while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
DRA A woman, when she is in labour, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but when she hath brought forth the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. BSB BSB: A woman has pain in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
DRA So also you now indeed have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice; and your joy no man shall take from you. BSB BSB: So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
Ask in My Name (Matthew 18:19–20)
DRA And in that day you shall not ask me any thing. Amen, amen I say to you: if you ask the Father any thing in my name, he will give it you. BSB BSB: In that day you will no longer ask Me anything. Truly, truly, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.
DRA Hitherto you have not asked any thing in my name. Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full. BSB BSB: Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
DRA These things I have spoken to you in proverbs. The hour cometh, when I will no more speak to you in proverbs, but will shew you plainly of the Father. BSB BSB: I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
DRA In that day you shall ask in my name; and I say not to you, that I will ask the Father for you: BSB BSB: In that day you will ask in My name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
DRA For the Father himself loveth you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. BSB BSB: For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God.
DRA I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again I leave the world, and I go to the Father. BSB BSB: I came from the Father and entered the world. In turn, I will leave the world and go to the Father.”
DRA His disciples say to him: Behold, now thou speakest plainly, and speakest no proverb. BSB BSB: His disciples said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and without figures of speech.
DRA Now we know that thou knowest all things, and thou needest not that any man should ask thee. By this we believe that thou camest forth from God. BSB BSB: Now we understand that You know all things and that You have no need for anyone to question You. Because of this, we believe that You came from God.”
DRA Jesus answered them: Do you now believe? BSB BSB: “Do you finally believe?” Jesus replied.
DRA Behold, the hour cometh, and it is now come, that you shall be scattered every man to his own, and shall leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. BSB BSB: “Look, an hour is coming and has already come when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and you will leave Me all alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
DRA These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you shall have distress: but have confidence, I have overcome the world. BSB BSB: I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”
