The Betrayal of Jesus (Matthew 26:47–56; Mark 14:43–52; Luke 22:47–53)
DRA When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples. BSB BSB: After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where they entered a garden.
DRA And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples. BSB BSB: Now Judas His betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples.
DRA Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. BSB BSB: So Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees. They arrived at the garden carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.
DRA Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said to them: Whom seek ye? BSB BSB: Jesus, knowing all that was coming upon Him, stepped forward and asked them, “Whom are you seeking?”
DRA They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them. BSB BSB: “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. Jesus said, “I am He.” And Judas His betrayer was standing there with them.
DRA As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward, and fell to the ground. BSB BSB: When Jesus said, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
DRA Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. BSB BSB: So He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered.
DRA Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way. BSB BSB: “I told you that I am He,” Jesus replied. “So if you are looking for Me, let these men go.”
DRA That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one. BSB BSB: This was to fulfill the word He had spoken: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.”
DRA Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was Malchus. BSB BSB: Then Simon Peter drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
DRA Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? BSB BSB: “Put your sword back in its sheath!” Jesus said to Peter. “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?”
DRA Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him: BSB BSB: Then the band of soldiers, with its commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him.
DRA Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people. BSB BSB: Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be better if one man died for the people.
Peter’s First Denial (Matthew 26:69–70; Mark 14:66–68; Luke 22:54–57)
DRA And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest. BSB BSB: Now Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.
DRA But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the portress, and brought in Peter. BSB BSB: But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.
DRA The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith: I am not. BSB BSB: At this, the servant girl watching the door said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” “I am not,” he answered.
DRA Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself. BSB BSB: Because it was cold, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had made to keep warm. And Peter was also standing with them, warming himself.
Jesus before the High Priest (Matthew 26:57–68; Mark 14:53–65; Luke 22:66–71)
DRA The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. BSB BSB: Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.
DRA Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing. BSB BSB: “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered. “I always taught in the synagogues and at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.
DRA Why asketh thou me? ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold they know what things I have said. BSB BSB: Why are you asking Me? Ask those who heard My message. Surely they know what I said.”
DRA And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so? BSB BSB: When Jesus had said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Him in the face and said, “Is this how You answer the high priest?”
DRA Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me? BSB BSB: Jesus replied, “If I said something wrong, testify as to what was wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why did you strike Me?”
DRA And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest. BSB BSB: Then Annas sent Him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials (Matthew 26:71–75; Mark 14:69–72; Luke 22:58–62)
DRA And Simon Peter was standing, and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not. BSB BSB: Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they asked him, “Aren’t you also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
DRA One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did I not see thee in the garden with him? BSB BSB: One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?”
DRA Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately the cock crew. BSB BSB: Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed.
Jesus before Pilate (Matthew 27:11–14; Luke 23:1–5)
DRA Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor’s hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch. BSB BSB: Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. By now it was early morning, and the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, to avoid being defiled and unable to eat the Passover.
DRA Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man? BSB BSB: So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”
DRA They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee. BSB BSB: “If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.”
DRA Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death; BSB BSB: “You take Him and judge Him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “We are not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews replied.
DRA That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die. BSB BSB: This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.
DRA Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me? BSB BSB: “Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me?”
DRA Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done? BSB BSB: “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?”
DRA Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice. BSB BSB: “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. “You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.”
DRA Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them: I find no cause in him. BSB BSB: “What is truth?” Pilate asked. And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.
DRA But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the pasch: will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews? BSB BSB: But it is your custom that I release to you one prisoner at the Passover. So then, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
DRA Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. BSB BSB: “Not this man,” they shouted, “but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist.)
