Joshua’s Charge to Leaders 1 DRA And when a long time was passed, after that the Lord had given peace to Israel, all the nations round about being subdued, and Josue being now old, and far advanced in years: BSB BSB: A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, when Joshua was old and well along in years,
2 DRA Josue called for all Israel, and for the elders, and for the princes, and for the judges, and for the masters, and said to them: I am old, and far advanced in years: BSB BSB: he summoned all Israel, including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers. “I am old and well along in years,” he said,
3 DRA And you see all that the Lord your God hath done to all the nations round about, how he himself hath fought for you: BSB BSB: “and you have seen everything that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake, because it was the LORD your God who fought for you.
4 DRA And now since he hath divided to you by lot all the land, from the east of the Jordan unto the great sea, and many nations yet remain: BSB BSB: See, I have allotted as an inheritance to your tribes these remaining nations, including all the nations I have already cut off, from the Jordan westward to the Great Sea.
5 DRA The Lord your God will destroy them, and take them away from before your face, and you shall possess the land as he hath promised you. BSB BSB: The LORD your God will push them out of your way and drive them out before you, so that you can take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you.
6 DRA Only take courage, and be careful to observe all things that are written in the book of the law of Moses: and turn not aside from them neither to the right hand nor to the left: BSB BSB: Be very strong, then, so that you can keep and obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, not turning aside from it to the right or to the left.
7 DRA Lest after that you are come in among the Gentiles, who will remain among you, you should swear by the name of their gods, and serve them, and adore them: BSB BSB: So you are not to associate with these nations that remain among you. You must not call on the names of their gods or swear by them, and you must not serve them or bow down to them.
8 DRA But cleave ye unto the Lord your God: as you have done until this day. BSB BSB: Instead, you shall hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.
9 DRA And then the Lord God will take away before your eyes nations that are great and very strong, and no man shall be able to resist you. BSB BSB: The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations before you, and to this day no one can stand against you.
10 DRA One of you shall chase a thousand men of the enemies: because the Lord your God himself will fight for you, as he hath promised. BSB BSB: One of you can put a thousand to flight, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as He promised.
11 DRA This only take care of with all diligence, that you love the Lord your God. BSB BSB: Therefore watch yourselves carefully, that you love the LORD your God.
12 DRA But if you will embrace the errors of these nations that dwell among you, and make marriages with them, and join friendships: BSB BSB: For if you turn away and cling to the rest of these nations that remain among you, and if you intermarry and associate with them,
13 DRA Know ye for a certainty that the Lord your God will not destroy them before your face, but they shall be a pit and a snare in your way, and a stumblingblock at your side, and stakes in your eyes, till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land, which he hath given you. BSB BSB: know for sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a snare and a trap, a scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.
14 DRA Behold this day I am going into the way of all the earth, and you shall know with all your mind that of all the words which the Lord promised to perform for you, not one hath failed. BSB BSB: Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know with all your heart and soul that not one of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
15 DRA Therefore as he hath fulfilled in deed, what he promised, and all things prosperous have come: so Will he bring upon you all the evils he hath threatened, till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land, which he hath given you, BSB BSB: But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come to pass, likewise the LORD will bring upon you the calamity He has threatened, until He has destroyed you from this good land He has given you.
16 DRA When you shall have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which he hath made with you, and shall have served strange gods, and adored them: then shall the indignation of the Lord rise up quickly and speedily against you, and you shall be taken away from this excellent land, which he hath delivered to you. BSB BSB: If you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from this good land He has given you.”
