Unlawful Sexual Relations (Matthew 5:27–30)
1 DRA And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: BSB BSB: Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 DRA Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: I am the Lord your God. BSB BSB: “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: I am the LORD your God.
3 DRA You shall not do according to the custom of the land of Egypt, in which you dwelt: neither shall you act according to the manner of the country of Chanaan, into which I will bring you, nor shall you walk in their ordinances. BSB BSB: You must not follow the practices of the land of Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not follow the practices of the land of Canaan, into which I am bringing you. You must not walk in their customs.
4 DRA You shall do my judgments, and shall observe my precepts, and shall walk in them. I am the Lord your God. BSB BSB: You are to practice My judgments and keep My statutes by walking in them. I am the LORD your God.
5 DRA Keep my laws and my judgments, which if a man do, he shall live in them. I am the Lord. BSB BSB: Keep My statutes and My judgments, for the man who does these things will live by them. I am the LORD.
7 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother: she is thy mother, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not expose the nakedness of your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual relations with her.
8 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s wife: for it is the nakedness of thy father. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; it would dishonor your father.
9 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy sister by father or by mother, whether born at home or abroad. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.
10 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy son’s daughter, or thy daughter’s daughter: because it is thy own nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, for that would shame your family.
11 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s wife’s daughter, whom she bore to thy father, and who is thy sister. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father’s wife, born to your father; she is your sister.
12 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s sister: because she is the flesh of thy father. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative.
13 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother’s sister: because she is thy mother’s flesh. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s close relative.
14 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s brother: neither shalt thou approach to his wife, who is joined to thee by affinity. BSB BSB: You must not dishonor your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations with her; she is your aunt.
15 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter in law: because she is thy son’s wife, neither shalt thou discover her shame. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; you are not to have sexual relations with her.
16 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother’s wife: because it is the nakedness of thy brother. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife; that would shame your brother.
17 DRA Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy wife and her daughter. Thou shalt not take her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter, to discover her shame: because they are her flesh, and such copulation is incest. BSB BSB: You must not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. You are not to marry her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter and have sexual relations with her. They are close relatives; it is depraved.
18 DRA Thou shalt not take thy wife’s sister for a harlot, to rival her, neither shalt thou discover her nakedness, while she is yet living. BSB BSB: You must not take your wife’s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is still alive.
19 DRA Thou shalt not approach to a woman having her flowers, neither shalt thou uncover her nakedness. BSB BSB: You must not approach a woman to have sexual relations with her during her menstrual period.
20 DRA Thou shalt not lie with thy neighbour’s wife, nor be defiled with mingling of seed. BSB BSB: You must not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife and thus defile yourself with her.
22 DRA Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind, because it is an abomination. BSB BSB: You must not lie with a man as with a woman; that is an abomination.
23 DRA Thou shalt not copulate with any beast, neither shalt thou be defiled with it. A woman shall not lie down to a beast, nor copulate with it: because it is a heinous crime. BSB BSB: You must not lie carnally with any animal, thus defiling yourself with it; a woman must not stand before an animal to mate with it; that is a perversion.
25 DRA And with which the land is defiled: the abominations of which I will visit, that it may vomit out its inhabitants. BSB BSB: Even the land has become defiled, so I am punishing it for its sin, and the land will vomit out its inhabitants.
26 DRA Keep ye my ordinances and my judgments, and do not any of these abominations: neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you. BSB BSB: But you are to keep My statutes and ordinances, and you must not commit any of these abominations—neither your native-born nor the foreigner who lives among you.
27 DRA For all these detestable things the inhabitants of the land have done, that; were before you, and have defiled it. BSB BSB: For the men who were in the land before you committed all these abominations, and the land has become defiled.
28 DRA Beware then, lest in like manner, it vomit you also out, if you do the like things, as it vomited out the nation that was before you. BSB BSB: So if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it spewed out the nations before you.
29 DRA Every soul that shall commit any of these abominations, shall perish from the midst of his people. BSB BSB: Therefore anyone who commits any of these abominations must be cut off from among his people.
30 DRA Keep my commandments. Do not the things which they have done, that have been before you, and be not defiled therein. I am the Lord your God. BSB BSB: You must keep My charge not to practice any of the abominable customs that were practiced before you, so that you do not defile yourselves by them. I am the LORD your God.”
